A's trade Matt Holliday to the Cardinals
The Oakland A's have traded Matt Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals for Brett Wallace, Shane Peterson, and Clayton Mortensen.
All three guys are included in John Sickels top 20+ prospect list for the Cards coming into the season, with Peterson and Mortensen grading at C+, Wallace as an A-.
UPDATE -- John Sickels likes the trade for both teams. I think his analysis is probably about right, particularly if the Cards decided Wallace can't stick at third base.

Meh.
The Cards don’t really do much for me. They’ve got Pujols and Carpenter, and now Holliday. And Ludwick might be coming on in the second half.
But the rest of that team, in my opinion, is a lot of filler. Joe Thurston? Skip Schumaker? Colby Rasmus (who’s a solid prospect, but a rookie nonetheless)? Brendan Ryan?
I think St. Louis is the third best team in the NL behind Philadelphia and LA.

The thing is
Oakland also got 4 months of a top player just in case they were competitive this year. Obviously, things broke badly for the A’s (or they never were going to be good, depending on whether you trust PECOTA et al or just common sense).
To break even or come out ahead on Matt Holliday, plus get 4 months of him, is a pretty big win for Beane, no matter how you slice it.

Agreed..
Too bad we don’t have a GM smart enough to sign guys and flip them if we fail to compete… Oh yeah……

Huston Street has been phenomenal
and has another year of team control. Gonzalez continues to struggle, but with all those tools and being so young, he’ll get plenty more chances. After looking at it some, I’m not sure that the A’s even broke even on the deal.

If Wallace projects to be a
patient, high avg, high obp with questions about his HR power then that seems to be comparable to Smoak. Especially if Adam is right about the Olerud comp.
I would prefer Smoak to end up being comparble with Eddie Murray but I would take an Olerud comp over a Mark Grace comp.

i’ll get to see holliday play with pujols, ludwick and the immortal derosa later this year against dan uggla and hanley remirez
Michael Young > Steve Garvey.
Nelson Cruz >Greg Nettles.
Elvis Andrus > Willie McGee.
Ian Kinsler > Darryl Strawberry.
i dunno, that's just really random.
i dont like this trade as a ranger fan
but if they were going to trade holliday i guess it could of been worse
of course i would of rather them keep holliday and then not offer arbitration and receive nothing…but that wasnt going to happen
but wallace has the potential to be a masher in the coming years and is near mlb ready
The only way I fear him
is if he finds a way to stick at 3B and be serviceable defensively over there. I would have rather had them not find a trade or settle for less, but Wallace could make them significantly better down the road if he can stick at 3B. If he has to move, then he isn’t nearly as valuable to them.

And have Holliday accept and cost them cash to prevent them from signing draft picks or something.
Unless they release him (without compensation) and pay 25% of that arbitration amount.

I think
Holliday jumps all over arbitration. He would get about 16 mil right? Take that deal, have a full year with pujols in the same lineup and hitting at the new Busch stadium. Seems like it is a much better place to hit than Oakland’s place. Tackle that lucrative, long-term contract during 2011.

I believe that Bay is, yes
Red Sox are a viable option but it may be a situation where Holliday has to choose between 5/65 or so and 16 mil for one yr with a possibility of a 4-5/60-75 deal. The arbitration decisions this year will be very interesting.

I don't see him getting 16mil in arb, but even if he could/did, why not take a long term offer, even if it's at less per season?
No one wants to play year to year, even if it’s the long term option.
I imagine someone will give him at absolute worst 5/65, and that beats the heck out of 1/16 if I’m him.

Seems like Wallace has a pretty good shot of moving across the diamond
Which will give the A’s a mini-Rangers’ situation at 1B/DH. The guys they will have there aren’t the same quality as what the Rangers have (Smoak/Davis/Ramirez/Moreland>>>Wallace/Barton/Carter/???), but they should be able to scrape together a nice 1B/DH situation out of it.

And also
Once upon a time ago the Cardinals traded the A’s BA’s #32 ranked prospect whose projected value was tied to his defensive position © and great offensive potential. Now, the Cardinals have traded the A’s BA’s #40 ranked prospect whose projected value is somewhat tied to his defensive position (3B) and great offensive potential. Now Wallace is definitely the safer bet of those two prospects, but two words for A’s fans dreaming up lineups and Rangers’ fans fearing them: Daric Barton

I wouldn't want the Rangers to give up a similar package to have Holliday hitting behind Hamilton.
From the Rangers’ perspective, that would’ve been an overpay, IMO. I think Beane got a good deal out of it. The Cards probably are going to get what they need for their lineup, but they are also going to age quickly over the next two seasons.

The rumors with the Red Sox sound a lot like Rangers-Red Sox rumors from the offseason. Indians want a ML-ready starter. Red Sox aren’t willing to offer Buchholz. So, the Indians could be happy to have a Masterson-type ML-ready pitcher but are just waiting to see if the Red Sox make a last minute improvement in what they’re willing to deal.
If young ML-ready starter is really what they want and only thing they’ll take, they’re asking for more than what Holliday brought back, IMO.

Neyer is losing faith in the GREAT BIlly Beane
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sweetspot/0-4-98/Losing-faith-in-the-A-s.html
At some point in these last three seasons, as I’ve watched the Oakland Athletics lose game after game, as I’ve seen move after move backfire — moves that I have generally supported, by the way — I seem to have lost my faith.
Today’s deal? On paper, it looks perfectly fine. The A’s trade two months of Matt Holliday and get (potentially) 18 years of three young St. Louis Cardinals. One of them, third baseman Brett Wallace, was a first-round draft pick just last year and is widely regarded as the Cardinals’ top prospect. Another, pitcher Clayton Mortensen, was a sandwick pick just two years ago and debuted in the majors a few weeks ago. And another, outfielder Shane Peterson, was a second-round draft pick last year and sports a .377 career on-base percentage in the minors (“Baseball America” doesn’t care much for Peterson, but John Sickels does).
As Erik Manning writes, Holliday’s worth $8 million and Wallace is worth $25 million. Even without considering Shane Peterson and Clayton Mortensen, it’s obviously a good deal for the A’s (we’ll have to wait and see if it’s a good deal for the Cardinals, since that depends largely upon whether or not they get into the playoffs).
If the A’s made a trade like this two years ago, I would have organized a parade to celebrate Billy Beane’s great wisdom.
Today? I just can’t do it. Instead of seeing three prospects obtained for a song, I wonder why the A’s would want a “pear-shaped” third baseman who doesn’t have much power and is widely thought to be a future first baseman, and I think about what a disaster Oakland’s last first-baseman-of-the-future (Daric Barton) has been. Instead of applauding Beane for adding to the organization’s pitching depth, I wonder what the A’s — who already have eight starting pitchers 25 or younger — could possibly do with another young starter. And I wonder how Peterson’s going to succeed where Ryan Sweeney and Travis Buck and Aaron Cunningham haven’t.
Before I can regain my faith in Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics, they’re going to need to find a real third baseman, and perhaps a young shortstop who can hit, and they’re going to need to actually develop a young hitter.
Before I can regain my faith in Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics, they’re going to need to start winning baseball games again.

~ Smoak, Murphy (BA says Peterson’s ceiling is 4th OFer), and Hunter?
Alma para conquistarte, corazón para quererte, y vida para vivirla junto a ti.
thats a better haul
Smoak>>wallace, and murphy has done it at the ml level. Not sure about hunter because his stock is high right now in rangerland.
I would say ramirez (pre injury), moscoso, golson/boggs/smith.
Obviuously I’m not too familiar with the other two guys but from what I’ve read the pitcher is a #5/bullpen arm and the OFer is a future 4th OFer with a good eye and fringe CF ability. So boggs is probably the closest comp but golson/smith may be more in line value wise depending on who you like. And 2008 ramirez had similiar value to wallace.
