Matt Harrison out for the season with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Matt Harrison is out for the season with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.
He's the third Ranger in recent years to deal with this, and I have to wonder if this is coincidence, the Rangers' medical staff picking up on something others don't, or what.
In any case, forget about him being back in the rotation in early August. Wednesday's rehab start is apparently the last time he'll be on the mound this year.

Or, as Blalock put it, lead the league in syndromes.
It’s a shame.

Well that sucks....
I was actually hoping that he could come back and make one solid start, and then be one of the chips traded for Halladay….(pipe dream I know)
BTW…why is it always a lefty that has this?

Does this now make us more likely to trade for a starter?
I would think so.
We are probably still looking at someone cheap both salary-wise and prospect wise.

I'm just afraid you would see the same things that we are seeing with Holland
too dependent on the fastball to be solid in the rotation

According to Wiki
The two groups of people most likely to develop TOS are those suffering neck injuries in motor vehicle accidents and those who use computers in non-ergonomic postures for extended periods of time. Young overhead athletes (such as swimmers, volleyball players and baseball pitchers) and musicians may also develop thoracic outlet syndrome, but significantly less frequently than the two large groups above.
I guess I’m due for it.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
so I either have
a bulging disc causing the pain down my left arm or TOS.

How do you masturbate without a computer?
Imagination? I think not. Still gonna need TOS.

Millwood, Padilla, Feldman, Hunter, Holland
With Moscoso, eventually B-Mac,maybe they try to stretch Jennings out. I think JD has to be working the phones for a veteran starter and a bat now. But they have to be cheap and not cost Smoak, Holand, Feliz, or Perez. Who is out there that fits that bill?

I'm guessing the Pirates are on JDs speed dial
Duke, Snell and even Capps and Grabow should they stretch Jennings or Feliz (doubt it) back out. I just don’t want to see Lizard or Benson making any starts for a team chasing the playoffs.

I'd rather have Duke

Kevin Correia
I heard his name mentioned a while back as someone the Rangers have interest in. He would be cheap and they could control him but I can’t imagine he would be of any long term value for the team. I wonder what it would take to get Lannan from the Nats?
I agree with Evan Grant
Ace SP or nothing at all. if they want a pitcher. I still think VMart would look good hitting behind Hamilton.

Smoak plus what?

Argh
Harrison was the guy that I had put an irrational amount of faith in this year. I was sure that he’d take a step forward from being just one of those mediocre lefties the Rangers tend to run out there to someone who actually has the ability to solidly handle the #3 or #4 spot in a rotation. And it’s sad, because he actually had shown some signs of making that jump before his first injury.
Ugh. I’m annoyed.
Go Rice Owls!
Damn
I had lost hope on him being more than a fringe starter the rest of the year so it doesn’t exactly devastate my rangers hopes, but its annoying nonetheless.
Dutch, you’ve got to come up big. Sorry for the pressure.
the preceding post was a great success.
Little harsh
He showed a stretch of what, 5 brilliant starts before going absolutely to shit in his last two?
Maybe he had clicked and the injury derailed him.
We can only hope he comes back and puts it back together after surgery, but he was currently a better rotation option than one of Holland/Hunter.
Harrison has more talent
in his shoe than Gabbard ever had.

JR Richard
If anyone remembers, TOS is credited with causing JR Richard’s stroke and ending what could have been a HOF career. It’s serious shit.
As far as the 2009
team is concerned, I don’t think this is a big deal at all. It was already very questionable if Harrison or BMac would be pitching again this year in the majors. Furthermore, the rotation is set with Millwood, Padilla, Feldman, Hunter, and Holland IMO. Harrison has sucked this year outside of a 3 week long run at the beginning of the year anyways. I know a bunch of people here will freak out with me saying this, but I’m growing a little tired of hearing all the talk of how the Tex trade was one of the best of the last several years. I still think we made an excellent deal don’t get me wrong. But Harrison hasn’t developed as hoped and Salty hasn’t hit. Andrus has been excellent and Feliz looks like a TORP (but is far from a sure thing like all young pitchers) and might end up in the pen anyways. I don’t classify that as good deal as most have made it out to be. Sure Salty’s bat could turn around and Feliz becomes an ace, but these things are far from certain. Anyways this news doesn’t bother me at all.
I get tired of people referring to the Texas-Atlanta
trade as the Tex deal. It was the Mahay deal and Teixeira was a list minute add in. /Ron Mahay

I've had the thought before
that some medical specialists tend to diagnose whatever it is that is their specialty. I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t some guy that has spent the last twenty years of his life studying Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and the Rangers keep bringing him patients with one or two symptoms familiar to him, and he keeps saying, “yup, just so happens he has it too.”
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
I was kind of wondering the same
If one or two symptoms fit “well you have tos, time to cut out a rib”
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
So...
Millwood
Pad’s, who will be injured again this year
Feldman
Tommy Boy
Dutch
Nippert, B-Mac, Benson, Mendoza….
Ok, look at that list above… Wouldnt you love to see Neftali at the front of this list? I understand what they are doing with him, but come on it would be nice…
by FormerLSBUser on Jul 24, 2009 5:32 PM CDT reply actions
Can we start leaving Mendoza off these lists?
I am canceling my mlb.tv and giving up on the Rangers the second he gets called up.
forget the Dozer
but Moscoso needs to be at the front of that list. He’s having an impressive run thru AAA.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
So, I'm confused...
he’s actually making another start on the upcoming Wednesday?
Is it to see if he can actually play through this, or how much pain he’s actually in? I’m a little confused.
I think he
meant last wed’s rehab start

if it's not the flu
it’s something else
Michael Young > Steve Garvey.
Nelson Cruz >Greg Nettles.
Elvis Andrus > Willie McGee.
Ian Kinsler > Darryl Strawberry.
i dunno, that's just really random.
Ugh indeed
What’s amazing, though, is that we’re doing well despite all of these injuries. This team has starting pitching depth. Read that last sentence again , It wasn’t a mirage.

I feel alright about this
It doesn’t disrupt the team as much as someone who’d been starting, plus there is a nice winning streak going right now.

random thought
Does harrison have options left? If there isn’t a trade and sheets is signed, then next year’s rotation is probably Millwood, Sheets, Feldman, Hunter, Holland. That would leave the following guys as bullpen/AAA rotation guys: feliz, harrison, hurley, B-Mac, moscoso, kiker with beavan, poveda, and kirkman at AA to start. That is some serious depth, plus you never know who they sign or deal for and the great Perez will still be charging hard.

Scheppers to AA as well?
With possible bumps for Perez to AA, and possibly others.
We’ve got a High-A, Low-A crunch right now, and have tandem starters.
Are we going to keep the tandem starts going when we get to the AA/AAA level? It’s just crazy.
Can't say I'm overly sad about this, as inconsistent as Harrison was this year
I’m kinda more dissapointed we won’t be able to use him as a trade chip at the deadline than the fact that we won’t see him in the roto for the rest of the season.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
I doubt we'd get much for him
and we have plenty of 2nd and 3rd tier pitching prospects we can use instead.
I’m not overly upset, mostly because he basicly had a good handful of starts in the middle of the season, but was mostly a failed bit the rest of the time.
I do think the injury shows why its so amusing that folks were getting their panties in a bunch over the Benson starts. Rangers fans should be used to pitching being a battle of attrition, and eventually every decent prospect will get more than a decent shot at establishing themselves in the roation. We’ve seen 10 starters already, and we will probably see a few more before the year is out.
