What is Feldman's style?

And why does it suggest that he’s particularly suited to generate a low BABIP?

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 25, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

well...

i would argue that his 2 seamer that works inside and draws weak grounders is a perfect example

by Horns130 on Jul 25, 2009 1:29 AM CDT up reply actions

yep

combination of a hard sinker and cutter is a good one. I thought Grieve explained it pretty well on the broadcast. When he gets his curve and/or change working he’s going to be very good.

Galaragga, if I remember right, has more of a power pitcher’s style: fastball, curve, change. But he doesn’t the overpowering fastball. I still think he’s going to be a pretty good pitcher in the long run but it will depend on his command.

Anyway I just meant that these guys pitch differently and don’t really compare that well when you look at what they throw. Add in the fact that Feldman seems to be getting better after a complete and total overhaul and change of roles…there’s just not much of a basis for comparing the the two.

People who thought the pitcher had no control over how well a hitter could hit a ball never saw Kevin Brown pitch. He did strike guys out, but when he was on there was never a ball hit hard off him. I’m not saying I’d compare Feldman to Kevin Brown, though. That would be ridiculous. I’m drunk. But if there’s one thing I do know it’s that if you’re getting jammed all the time you’re not going to hit the ball very well. You’re not going to hit the ball very well if it tails down and away late, either. That’s the kind of action Feldman has. Plus he does a pretty good job at staying away from the middle of the plate. I don’t see any reason why teams would start hitting him if they haven’t already.

by Black Francis on Jul 25, 2009 2:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Feldman has a really complementary set of pitches.

His 2-seamer runs in on righties, his cutter runs away. Maybe I have that backwards, but the point is that, both pitches are effectively the same speed but moving in opposite directions so the batter has to figure out / guess at which pitch he’s getting and swing for that pitch.

If he swings inbetween the two, or at the wrong one, then he ends up hitting it off of the end of the bat, or towards the handle, or completely misses it.

Feldman also has pretty reasonable command that has only been improving with time.

Like I had mentioned in the spring, I don’t think Feldman tops out as a #5 rotation spot / spot starter at best. This guy is completely different from the spotty reliever we knew as Scott Feldman, and the only similarity between the two is that they were both pitchers.

In effect, stats prior to 2008 don’t really mean anything at the minor or major league level.

Feldman seems to get more broken bats, weak dinkers, and astonished looks from batters than any other one of our starters, and he’s quickly become my favorite starter to watch pitch.

by Trickman on Jul 25, 2009 3:05 AM CDT up reply actions

If that were the case...

…then others that throw a two seamer would generate low BABIPs.

In fact, ground ball pitchers tend to have higher BABIPs, because ground balls go for hits more often than fly balls.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 25, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure that's true.

The guy has an ERA around 3 as a starter. Maybe at some point he does start giving up some seeing eye singles. But at some point he’s also going to start sitting guys down on strikes and going deeper into games while doing it. Now I don’t think he’s a guy that’s going to be a Cy Young contending, 200+ innings throwing, elite workhorse like Roy Halladay. I do, however, think he’s already good and see room for improvement. You can throw all the stats you want out there but at some point results have to speak for themselves. MLB batters have had a hell of a time figuring this guy out. It’s clear to see.

Some people seem to be waiting for a Scott Feldman meltdown just as I have long seen nothing but fail in Hank Blalock. The difference is, though, that I will readily acknowledge that Blalock has all the talent in the world, and when he slows down and takes the right approach the man can still hit the goddamn baseball. Why people can’t or won’t see that Feldman has talent at the same time he’s actuall doing something positive with it I don’t understand.

We’re not even dealing with a short sample here. Last year Feldman was pretty decent considering that before that season he’d never once started a professional game and his arm was completely ragged out. He’s been showing promise for a good while now…he’s not a Johnny come lately or whatever.

You and every other Rangers fan should feel damn lucky to have him. This wasn’t one of those scouting achievements or a situation where they threw a lot of money at a free agent or a 1st round pick. When they got this guy they didn’t know what they had until they overhauled him. How often have we seen the Rangers screw around with a pitcher only to see it backfire? Well this time someone saw something in this guy who was by all accounts just another guy and brought have done great things with him. And Feldman, to his credit, was willing to ditch what got him to the big leagues and start all over again. You don’t see that very often.

Holy Hell. Enjoy it.

by Black Francis on Jul 25, 2009 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure if you are addressing me with all this or not

I’m fine with Feldman. I think he’s a nice pitcher. I didn’t want to see him cut loose a couple of winters ago, when many others did. I bitched about Benson being in the rotation instead of Feldman.

But he’s not a top of the rotation pitcher. He’s a nice middle to back end starter, a guy who is throwing strikes and giving you innings. He’s a good starting pitcher. He’s valuable to have.

But he’s not a #1 or a #2, and I don’t think he’s suddenly going to start striking out lots of guys or continue posting a sub-4 ERA in the rotation. There’s little reason to believe that’s going to happen.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 25, 2009 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I was addressing several people

I’m not saying he’s going to be a legit #1 or #2 guy, either. I think he may be a little better than you think, however, and I see no reason to believe the league is going to start having their way with him. Another good start and he could have a sub-3 ERA in the rotation. For it to get back up to four from where it is now he’s going to have to start sucking and I don’t see that happening to be honest with you and I don’t know why you think it’s likely. I never said he’s going to turn into a strikeout pitcher, but I do think if his curve and/or change comes along he will strike out more people than he is now.

I think that once he’s throwing more innings he’s good enough to front a solid but not spectacular Rangers rotation. Better than Millwood. Better than Padilla. The only one on the big league roster I can see who may get better than Feldman during the next year or so is Holland. That kid has something, but he’s got a lot of work to do to get to the point where Feldman is. He’s the kind of talent that can make up that ground pretty quickly, though. Maybe he will or maybe he’ll take a little longer.

But the point is Feldman’s pitching his ass off, having success, and there’s a few people around here who’d have us believe it’s all some kind of statistical aberration. I call bullshit on that.

Just curious here to see what you really think of him compared to others in the rotation. If it were late September and the rangers were about to start a three game set against the Angels, who would you have pitching and in what order?

by Black Francis on Jul 25, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

and is one of the better pitchers in the game. Nobody solved him.

Give kudos to Hank F for coming thru yet again when we needed him and against a lefty.

Beautiful game.

of the market not behaving like it had in the past. In the past 6.5 for Hank coming out of last year was a reasonable number. I was expecting Abreu to get closer to 10 and for a few years. I was expecting the Nats to pay more for Dunn too, though probably not much more.

JD has been told by marketing people within the organization how much he is despised by the common Ranger fan and that it’s much better for business in general for John Q Public to believe Nolan is the Executive Face of the Franchise.

Kinda sucks for JD, because he built a helluva farm system.

JD used to be all over the place…had a weekly show on BAD Radio and he even had the balls to go on with RG but all of that changed in February 08.

A drop of 600,000 in attendance will make that happen.

Interesting take

And I can certainly buy that Travis J. ‘Wen wee gon git sum peeechin?’ Rangersfan hates Daniels with a passion that defies logic- being that Daniels is young, intelligent, educated, and not from Texas. Nolan being his polar opposite in a lot of ways (note that I’m not making a ’JD is smart, Nolan is dumb and likes cattle joke here), it makes tons of sense for him to be the face.

In fact, I’d wager it wasn’t a PR rep telling JD that, more likely JD telling a PR rep that

One could make the point that Daniels does still make himself very available, just avoids most of the theatrics of the local writers (really, would you talk to JFE if there wasn’t a Nick & Sams gift certifaicate or something on it for you?).

I'm back to my hotel room and freshly showered.

I was in row H of section 125 – Basically about 2 sections to the third base side of what would be dead on right behind home plate. I didn’t get any, “Saw you on TV!” texts so I assume I was not seen, however I wore a surgical face mask with a “T” logo on it for the first 8 1/2 innings (at which point I swapped it out for my C.J. blinders [aka sunglasses]).

Before the game I was hanging out behind the dugout (not hawking autographs, just taking pictures) with the mask on. Johnny Narron saw it… made eye contact and chuckled at me… then did so again a few minutes later and pulled Jose Vazquez over and pointed me out to him. Someone, a sports writer, perhaps? I’m not sure… pointed me out to T.R. Sullivan. I personally yelled at Tom Grieve and asked him how his immune system is. He asked me if I had any extra masks. (In fact I did, but I had no takers.)

This was my first trip,

But the place is beautiful. The concession setup seemed to make a lot more sense than at RBiA, at least on the lower level. I got half-soaked when I was walking by the fountains and a gust of wind came by. I like how it’s more open in the outfield – not that I don’t think our center field office building is just fabulous.

Thats one thing I wish the rangers ballpark had, an nice open outfield. I love the open stadium look.

CJ closes this game despite having a fever from the flu

gotta give this kid the closers role for good. He’s not a situational reliever – Frankie is situational – 3 trips to the DL already this season.

Franke Francisco

is a better pitcher than CJ Wilson.

Apparently to Josey

when he is not hurt, sore, or sick which has been for how many games this year?

my point is that if he is not available/reliable then he is not going to make a good closer

by eclou on Jul 24, 2009 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure

what he can do about illnesses.

CJ had a bone chip injury that shelfed him for the stretch run. That doesn’t affect his abilities as a pitcher. I think it’s dumb to hold injuries against players, especially if they’ve shown themselves to be very effective when not injured. CJ has been a good pitcher this year, his best year to date, in fact according to DIPS stats. But Francisco has been and, I believe, is the superior pitcher.

I agree. Can't hold injuries against someone, but CJ lost the job to Frankie last year

and I think he has demonstrated that he deserves it this year. I guess it doesn’t really matter a whole lot as long as they are winning and someone is getting the job done.

Both CJ and Frankie

will need extensions soon. Frankie after next season, I believe. I think the team will make a decision soon.

BS

At times CJ was wrongly vilified…however, at other times he damn well deserved it

by Horns130 on Jul 25, 2009 1:34 AM CDT up reply actions

But what about Detroit?

C.J. gets alot more flack than he probably deserves, largely due to his attitude I think.

He also had a tendency eariler in the season to walk the very first batter he would face (or atleast one batter) and was giving up a run, or sometimes two.

While he didn’t blow many games, he also wasn’t a sit-down shut-down releaver like Francisco had been until his more recent stretch of dominance.

Went to the game in KC today

There were a surprising amount of Rangers fans there! It was awesome to see my section doing the Byrd after he hit his home run. It was pretty good to see us beat Grienke, but I thought it was better watching a great young pitcher of our own pitch one of the best games of his career (even though it was against the offensively inept Royals). I love the new K and the fireworks after the game were pretty sweet too! Overall, it was a great night!

encouraged a lot more annoying fan habits. Did they do the wave this time?

You know,

I detected no wave last night. Didn’t even think about it.

They do have a lot more of those annoying “make noise” prompts during at-bats, whenever the batter steps out, for inexplicable reasons. They also have some odd between-innings promotions. Then again, so do we…
