Really tough.
I’m leaning towards Edwin Escobar.
I’m trying to think of it as: “The Cardinals dealt Troy Glaus to the Rangers today for salary relief and a PTBNL. ESPN has learned the PTBNL is minor leaguer NOT among the first 21 in the ongoing LSB CPP.”
Who would I most want the Cards not to pick?
I’ve narrowed my choices to Escobar, Alvarez, Telis and Lemon.
Zork!

I like the thought exercise
It makes me regret picking Michael Kirkman, but I’m sticking with this proximity-over-ceiling thing…

Ive noticed during this process most split into two catagories
Those who favor ceiling and those who favor proximity to the majors.
I for one favor ceiling as a prospect to me is what they COULD be not where they play.

Strop, Gomez, Escobar, Telis and cases could be made for guys like Smith, Phillips and lil Lemon

Scheppers is our number 4 prospect
And he’s got plenty of injury risk attached to him as well. A guy who is an ML ready starter and can be better than a number 5 should be in the top 20 prospects of any system.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Scheppers
I dont think his injury is nearly as sever and he’s already been cleared by medical staffs of a few teams.
The type of injury hurley has is one that is pretty hard to come back from based on what ive read.

Not saying its not a risky injury
but he’s still very young and doesn’t really have an bad injury history. That’s pretty much the best case scenario for what type of pitcher would go through this kind of injury.

I'm torn between Strop and Gomez here
The Egyptian god of walking more than you strike out, Ne-Ra, just doesn’t intreague me.
I think I’ll go Strop, just based on the electric arm and the chance to make a bigger impact sooner in the ’pen if things click for him.

I'm going up to catch two Hickraw games next week.
Unfortunately it’s looking like I’ll miss Font again which makes my penis frown, but if my math is right I’ll get to see Boscan again and get to check out Namirez and finally find out if I hate seeing him as much in person as I hate seeing him in boxscores.

Nah, it's like 1.5 hours with not traffic according to people who've made the drive.
I’m gonna make the trip up to see Font at least once this year, though.
Even if I can’t convince anyone to go with me and have to spend three hours in the car and then be that guy looking super pathetic and lonely sitting all by himself in a minor league ballpark… I have to see Wilmer, damn it!!!

Oh, and the Audicity of Strop does nothing for me.
He must be one of hell of a thing to watch, cause a reliever with that cringy of a delivery who can’t get the walks under control makes me flaccid as fuck.
He’s barely in my top 40.

Strops delivery
his delivery is pretty damn violent, but he has the stuff to get results. Maybe ive become a little biased because of trips ranking of him.
If strop can keep his arm from falling off he can be a nice piece to the bullpen.
Also with strop you have to keep in mind he’s still fairly new to pitching.

Binning what's left
Guys with all-star potential but a fatal flaw
Strop – Except for the walks, he looks like a closer (9 K/9, 0.5 HR/9, 1.62 GO/FO). His walk-rate has improved each month and is down to 3.7 BB/9 in July.
NeRa – He just needs to throw strikes. Opponents have hit .166 and .220 against him in the past two years.
Breakout candidates
Sardinas and Jurickson – The most recent prospects whom the Rangers signed with bonuses in the $1.5-2.0 M range? Ross, Beavan, and Borbon
Escobar and Alvarez – Solid results and reports as 16/17 yo’s
Erlin – Kiker, Perez, Ross, Erlin
Brigham – Strong peripherals a year after TJS (9.8 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9, 1.02 GO/FO)
Likely to be unspectacular major leaguers
Lemon and Vallejo – backup MIF
Gomez, Phillips, and Pimental - middle relievers
Smith and Bianucci – 4th outfielders
Pina – backup catcher
My vote goes to the guy whose Spokane numbers look like Derek Holland’s:
Holland – 3.22 ERA, 11.1 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, 1.16 WHIP
Tullis – 2.30 ERA, 10.7 K/9, 1 BB/9, 1.10 WHIP
Tullis is just 19 years old (Holland was 21 when he was in Spokane). He also has that insane GO/FO rate (3.17). Assuming they follow similar development paths, Ross and Tullis should follow Holland/Feliz, Kiker/Poveda, Beavan/Main, and Perez/Font as the next pitching pair to watch as they work their way through the Rangers’ system.
by spurdynasty on Jul 25, 2009 9:24 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Tullis is a solid choice.
If I had to round out this top 30 of ours right ow, my next 9 would be from among these guys: Escobar, Tullis, Telis, Lemon, Brigham, Thompson, Alvarez, Profar and Sardinas.
Again, that’s unordered.
Leury Garcia’d be my 31st, most likely.
I could definitely see an argument for tons of other guys, though. It gets a bit murky down here and you can go a lot of different ways depending on what you want to emphasize.

It's a small sample size (27 IP), but Tullis has produced like a TORP prospect
High strikeout and groundball rates combined with a low walk rate and BAA (.239). Right now, Ross and Tullis look to be the most impressive pitching prospects in the NWL.

I went with
Tomas Telis for this one. He plays a very important defensive position, and is apparently pretty good at it. He has great contract rates and had a history of great plate discipline for the DSL. He’s shown great improvement in a lot of areas, I have a lot more faith in him than I did for guys like Santana or Yan.

From Scott Lucas' 7/25 Rookie Report
Edwin Escobar yielded eight hits but walked none in four innings. He gave up three runs and struck out four. The 17-year-old has a 7% walk rate and 25% strikeout rate in 24.2 innings.

Total grab-bag at this point
Neil, Edwin, Alvarez, Telis, Tullis, Sardines, Juri-curl, Phillips, Strop, and Timmy Smith.
To me, it came down to Jurickson (love the pedigree, and a 16 year old shortstop hitting homers from both sides of the plate in a major league ballpark-yeah, yeah, it’s just BP- is really, really fucking intriguing) and Edwin. I went with Edwin, just because it’s great to hear we’re picking up LA guys with intelligence and character when there’s reports of kids down there living in batting practice and running drills from the age of ten to sixteen, then coming over here with a fourth-grade education and pocket full of cash.
I do realize I just fawned over a report of a Latin American kid having an awesome batting practice show and then didn’t vote for him because there’s too many kids that are impressive in batting practice but don’t know how to play or tie their shoes. Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.

From Chuckles Newberg himself;
Incidentally, Profar, who gained repute as an 11-year-old when he led Curacao to the 2004 Little League World Series title as that squad’s pitching ace but will play shortstop professionally, took batting practice at Rangers Ballpark today and went deep – from both sides of the plate. He’s 16.

There you have it, Newberg’s a fan of Profar’s, Sardines’, and Garia’s tools.

But there’s a decent argument for him having the highest ceiling of anyone on the list we’ve actually seen play at this point.

I understand the argument, but I hate it
He’s approaching 2 full seasons after he was drafted and barely has any pro innings under his belt while showing some horribly bad control problems. I just don’t see any reason to put him ahead of other high ceiling guys that are just as far away like many of the LA guys.

You're kind of glazing over the concept of ceiling
There aren’t many high ceilings at this point on the list. Ramirez has a much higher one that most anyone on there. For goodness sakes Phillips has 8 votes to his 24. That’s hardly a travesty. Not saying that I have a strong opinion on Ramirez, but results shouldn’t be 100% of the basis of voting.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 25, 2009 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand that he has a very high ceiling
But I think at this point, he is very, very unlikely to reach that ceiling at any point. His results do play a part in that for me. There haven’t exactly been any glowing reports on him this season and it looks like he’s going to have to start in Hickory again next season to work on his control. I just don’t see what makes him more special than Escobar, Tullis (who I voted for), Pimental, or even Kennil Gomez who is also disappointing this season but has at least shown something in previous years. I think Ramirez probably fits in somewhere among that group of pitchers, but I wouldn’t put him ahead of all of them.
