LAA/MIN and Saturday Afternoon Trade Talk

For those who dont know, the LAA/MIN game is on Fox (at least in Dallas it is)

Here's a link to the LAA/MIN gameday if you'd like to follow along:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2009_07_25_minmlb_anamlb_1&mode=gameday

I helped clutter the last trade discussion thread with a ton of talk about Josh Willingham. So i figured i'd start a new one with some talking points to go along with a prayer meeting to call upon God to throw the Angels out of the baseball heaven they've pretty much enjoyed the last 6 years or so.

Halladay:

"the Phillies are now balking at the Blue Jays' asking price, which was formally presented Thursday as J.A. Happ, Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown. It's believed they're hoping to substitute Carlos Carrasco for one of Happ or Drabek, particularly Drabek."

and now:

the Phillies have formally rejected the Blue Jays' proposal.  Philadelphia is reportedly opposed to giving up both Drabek and Happ. (If i where the Phillies I wouldnt deal both of those guys either, but id do everything around that to make it work)

the Angels have "intensified their bid" for Halladay. The Jays are said to be asking for one player from the Halos' major-league roster and "another who could make an impact in 2010."  (Ugh)

Willingham:

Newberg's Proposed trade idea:

Poveda+ Moreland for Willingham... I dont think that would be enough, but I do think if we added another mid teens level pitching prospect, like a Moscoso or Boscan we could likely do it. The Nats want young pitchers and I think we could interest them enough with some of or mid level pitchers to get a deal done.

Willingham's numbers: .288/.408/.553 for a .415 wOBA this year, Career: .269/.367/.483 for a .370 wOBA

He's upped his BB% to 13.7 over his career 12.0. His ISO is up about 50 points to .265. Anyways, whether or not he's the .370 wOBA hitter over his career or the .400 wOBA hitter this year, he's a valueable player and could be a useful hitter down the stretch for us. He's under team control through 2 more arbitration years after this year.

Interesting stuff...

and as i made this post the Twins go up 2-0 on the Angels.

Well if the Angels do get Halladay at least they will have to give up something this time

Casey Kotchman and Stephen Marek (doing poorly/injured this year I believe)……… lol.

Go Twins.

the preceding post was a great success.

help me here

If you are Riccardi, who do you ask for from LAA?

Wood seems like he would be an obvious target, then what?

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

im not sure, but apparently the Blue Jays know what they want:

“the Blue Jays have presented similar proposals (or lists of desired prospects) to the Dodgers and Angels. “The ball is in their court,” as Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi said Friday."

Wood, Reckling, one of their young SPs

They’d ask for Weaver, but I don’t see why the Angels agree to that.

If the Jays don’t get Weaver back, they’d want the Angels to take a bunch of salary (Wells?)

Go Rice Owls!

Rosenthal

I’m watching the STL/PHI game on Fox. Rosenthal came on to saw that the Blue Jays asked for Brandon Wood, Erick Aybar, Joe Saunders, and a minor league prospect. The Angels apparently were not interested.

why in hell would the Angels turn that down?

Because some people with the Halos think Joe Saunders is good.

by slc ranger on Jul 25, 2009 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

because saunders is having a bad year but can round into last year's form (at least us angels' fans hope)

plus wood is our top prospect and aybar is fantastic defensively and is starting to round the corner to becoming a really good hitter

plus the minor league prospect was probably walden or reckling

Angels

We could top that package pretty easily.

Tampa Bay is the team that could go him if they wanted to. They have shortstop and plenty of young pitching they could offer, but I guess they can’t take on the salary.

im not sure, but i feel like Wood is a lesser prospect than Davis

he’s older. Although, he does have the ability to play a more premium defensive spot.

its not good

because all of their young players are on the team right now
the top young guys for years have included saunders, weaver, santana, basically the entire bullpen, infield, and both of the catchers

and the difference between wood and davis is wood’s potential upside is a lot bigger and he hasn’t recieved extended playing time like davis has

I hope they put the pedal to the metal… Matt Palmer has a 4.76 ERA. He should NOT have a 7-1 record if he has a 4.76 ERA.

So what does Rev think of his theory about MLB trying to fix things so baseball gets big in DFW now?

Seems like MLB actually fixed things so the Angels will win it so that they can lose in the first round of the playoffs again. How else do you explain every team playing its worst possible baseball when it faces the Angels?

by Inkara1 on Jul 25, 2009 4:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

No clue

But the Angels are just like the kid who cheats, lies, and steals all the way through school and gets away with it because a parent is in the office weekly threatening to sue and blaming other kids for his son’s weitd behavior. citing everything from Watergate to Columbine and questioning the motives and background of his teachers. And Rev is that parent.

It is a big deal

How many teams in the last 10 years have made the playoffs when they were four games out in late July?

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 25, 2009 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

looks like, on average, it happens twice every year

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

by tricer on Jul 25, 2009 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

22.3% of playoff teams

during that time frame fit that criterion. not a huge portion, but certainly enough to show it’s doable. I wonder what percentage of teams 4 games back made the playoffs. i also wonder what percentage of teams 4 games behind a divisional opponent with a greater likelihood of trading for a productive veteran (or a likelihood of trading for a more productive veteran) made the playoffs.

not panic time, but not the rosiest of outlooks either.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 25, 2009 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, on opening day when everybody is 0-0, 73% of the teams will end up not making the playoffs

So there really isn’t much difference in the probability of any random team on opening day making the playoffs compared to a team 4 or more games back on July 25.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

by tricer on Jul 26, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

doubtful

27% of 0-0 teams make the playoffs.

maybe they are waiting to see if any bette offers come in or trying to squeeze another prospect or two out of the angels, but that seems like a pretty attractive deal. is drabek’s ceiling really that much higher than what weaver already is? he still has 3 years before F.A. it looks like, not bad.
