Rangers make push for Doc man.
The Rangers were requested to send four of their top young players (the Rangers have many), and countered with a proposal that included two of those players, according to league sources
Hmm. What to make of this... No clue. Talk amongst yourselves.
Good night.
Oooooh, I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express right now, wonder if I'll feel good in the morning. Maybe. On the other hand maybe not. What a conundrum. 75 yet? Geez.

Be nice but
They need a hitter with a good eye and can take a pitch to go with him.

Please no.
I don’t think we’re one stud pitcher away.
However, I reserve the right to piss myself if Doc actually comes here.

I agree.
But man, the guy is just a horse.

I get the feeling
That he’s supposed to be the primary Dirk backup and Buckner/Hump/etc. will be moved for Chandler or Camby still.

Still for 4.5 mil???
No way another team gives him close to that. No freaking way.

It’s one year. We weren’t going to sign more than one guy with the MLE. Still have the BAE if we want McCants.

Warrick became free a couple days ago.
Much Much Much better alt to Gooden and the Griz withdrew a 3 million offer. Could’ve been ours. Will you agree that Warrick>Gooden?

See that's why I'm upset
If you’re going to offer 4.5 mil, why not get Warrick? A younger much more athletic and overall better player?

Well
It doesn’t appear that he’s the rebounder Gooden is.
And he probably can’t play many minutes at 5.
And…I dunno. I’m with you. But still, rationally, this is an upgrade over Bass and/or Singleton.

gooden is not better than bass
id imagine only reason he got this much cash was b/c there’s nobody else out there (which isnt true, id have gone after the currently injured leon powe) and he’ll be gone after this season

How
Is he not better than Bass?
Bass has some serious overraters out there.
by brettgardner on Jul 26, 2009 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
ive seen both play
gooden has always put up some pretty empty stats and he’s lousy defensively

by studcrackers on Jul 26, 2009 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Empty stats?
Well that’s not really quantifiable.
I agree that Bass has probably surpassed him in terms of defending the 4—neither can defend 5s, however.
But Gooden is a better offensive player, and I don’t think the minimal difference between their defense is enough to call Bass a better player.
Neither of them are great options.
by brettgardner on Jul 26, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
this will be
his 7th team in 8 years, id say some people dont value him that much
i still dont see how he’s better than bass, plus he lacks the explosiveness bass has. only thing i think he has going for them is him being taller than bass.
christ why did the magic have to match gortat’s contract
go here to view my blog: http://dirtfromd.blogspot.com
by studcrackers on Jul 26, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If that's
How you determine value, then Bass has been on 3 teams in 4 years.
Gooden is not a solution, and I don’t think anybody is claiming that he is. If we had signed him to a Bass-ish deal, I’d be livid. But he’s a guy with a load of experience who’s not old, can slide between 4 and 5, rebound, score, and only has a year here.
It’s a solid move after the better one (Gortat) didn’t materialize.
by brettgardner on Jul 26, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
id like to say
i dont hate the deal mainly b/c it’s 1 year and he’s essentially a trade chip or another expiring contract and at a 1 year deal he’s probably a better contract than bass
but i think bass is the better player
go here to view my blog: http://dirtfromd.blogspot.com

If Bass was 2 inches taller, he'd be the better player.
But he’s not. And he has small hands. I wonder if he or Kwame Brown has smaller hands.
by tyd3311 on Jul 26, 2009 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
are small hands
the worst thing in the world? even w/small hands he still hasnt a 7’2 wingspan which is huge for a guy his size. would you rather him have small hands or kevin willis t-rex arms?
go here to view my blog: http://dirtfromd.blogspot.com
by studcrackers on Jul 26, 2009 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Small hands
Are a very bad thing in basketball when you play a position that requires catching the ball.
There’s no use in choosing between small hands and short arms—very good players have neither.
I will say, however, that a guy who’s supposed to spell Dirk (and presumably not let the offense completely suck) would be better served to have large hands.
by brettgardner on Jul 26, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
he's basically just 9 months younger
and gooden is a better rebounder.
i’m not disagreeing, im just wondering what he brings, aside from ‘athleticism’, that makes him substantially better than gooden
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 26, 2009 2:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's more advanced offensively
And actually, he is a better offensive rebounder than Gooden, strangely (looking at 82games).

probably just due diligence
on JD’s part. when push comes to shove we can put together a better package than most other teams, but i doubt we will want to give up what we have to give up, and that’s fine, i think it would end up being a mistake.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 26, 2009 1:31 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts exactly...
JD is probably just checking in to see what it would cost. When told what they wanted, he cut it in half.
I don’t want to see the Rangers make a deal like this. For me guys like Andrus, Holland, Feliz, Smoak, and Perez are as close to untouchable as it gets. I hope JD would have to be blown away to deal anyone of those guys.

We have enough on the farm and I bet they make a push and get him and another bat in here. Bigger question who will they give up to get him. Which two of the four did JD counter with?

I bet not boomer numer uno.
Doc won’t agree to come here and sure as hell won’t sign an extension. Does adding him give us a shot at a title in the next couple years? Doubt it. Therefore, I don’t think it’s worth it. If he comes here though, just awesome. Love watching the guy pitch.

I don't know...
If the rumor is true, and the Jays even told the Rangers what they would accept, maybe that means the Jays know from Halladay that he would accept the trade to the Rangers.
This is obviously all based off of speculation, and on the other hand it could just be the Jays using the Rangers as leverage against other teams.
by tdi1985 on Jul 26, 2009 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Very unlikely
The Rangers aren’t on his top 10 of desired destinations and I don’t think we could stomach losing (Example) Feliz, Smoak, and Kiker when the hitting’s more problematic than the pitching atm.

went to a WS on less run support 4 years ago. You always have a chance when the opposition is only scoring 2 or 3.

But even they were putting guys on-base
more than the Rangers are now. Berkman and Ensberg were both high-OBP sluggers. I guess Jason Lane and Craig Biggio were swing-for-the-fences types though. The Rangers can’t say much in that regard right now, but I guess they don’t have the legit black holes of Brad Ausmus (still, .351 OBP as a weak-hitting catcher), Adam Everett or Chris Burke.
Though those pitchers #1 to #3 were spectacular.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.

I wonder which 4 they asked four...
my guess would be that 2 of them were in our top 4 (Feliz, Holland, Perez, Smoak)
and my guess is that JD’s counter-offer included 1 of them.
I still think Halladay only lands one bluechip prospect….with some other nice prospects thrown in…..
I don’t think it will help us this year, but maybe next year…JD should make his final offer firm at the deadline, If the Jays pass then so be it

needs to find out one more time to see if Halladay will change his mind about pitching here. What’s the point of putting together fantasy trades if the guy never intends on coming here? Why waste hours of precious time on a dead end?
