how good has the angels hitting been?
Pretty much the entire month of July the angels have been without 2 offensive forces, Vlad and Hunter. Most of us figured that they would take a hit offensively.
The team OPS for July is an amazing .886 while for the season it's been .795. that's a .090 jump.
the team batting average for july??? .320
a look at the guys that have the bulk AB's for the month and their OPS for july, the season and career. everything here can easily be found at espn.com
player ops for july (for season) (for career)
jeff mathis .633 (.602) (.599)
kendry morales .941 (.879) (.789)
howie kendrick .963 (.701) (.752)
chone figgins .930 (.814) (.751)
erick aybar 1.101 (.787) (.692)
juan rivera 1.009 (.873) (.810)
garry matthews .574 (.605) (.737)
bobby abreu .946 (.849) (.900)
reggie willits .542 (.553) (.687)
mike napoli .894 (.867) (.861)
maicer izturis .938 (.787) (.731)
with the exception of willits and matthews, everybody has exceeded their career numbers by quite a bit, and july is dragging up their season numbers.
at the exact same time, rangers hitters are putting up horrible numbers.
******
the angels staff ERA for july is 4.65 and 4.68 on the season.
their whip is 1.37 for july and 1.43 on the season.
so their pitching is slightly better for the month as well.
the rangers staff era for july/season is 3.41/4.22
the rangers staff whip for july season is 1.24/1.37
so the rangers pitching has gotten quite a bit better as their hitters have faltered.
******
we can assume that the angels hitters will fall off a bit can't we? what about when hunter and vlad return?
assuming their pitching stays consistent, will a slowing down of their bats be enough for texas to catch up?
we HOPE HOPE HOPE the rangers hitters will start hitting again(and i didn't put their numbers up because we all realize how bad they have been) , but will the pitching stay strong or fall to earth?
i'm not gonna look it up, but i think the angels went into the ASB with a 1 game lead. july is nearly over and it's grown to a 3.5 game lead at the moment. with amazing hitting they only gained 2.5 games. i don't think that is TOO terribly bad.
*****
no real revelation here, other than showing just how impossibly good the angels offense has been.
nothing gold can stay.

I kinda hoped
one of the self-proclaimed SABRmetricians here at LSB would’ve posted a thorough analysis of how fluky the Angels’ hitting has been and how they won’t be able to sustain it the rest of the way. I guess they’ve all been too demoralized by our terrible 6-1 record over the last 7.

i guess they could sustain it.
we’ve seen lineups put up numbers like that before.
of course, look at who played for those teams…
last season the team OPS for LAA was .743, 50 plus points lower than this season

They do have the highest BABIP in the majors (.326)
Which could regress… but then again, we put up a .329 BABIP to lead the majors last year.

would be amazing
if their whole offense puts up career numbers in the same season. their OPS on the season puts them up with the rangers, red sox and yankees over the past several seasons. this after the angels have typically been in the middle of the pack.

im thinking their speed helps out with BABIP a little, but im not sure how much.
i was also looking at it recently and thinking that at least in theory, one could say this offensive surge is attributable to young hitters getting better. while a lot of guys are outperforming career production, they dont have long major league track records. However, it would defy a little bit of conventional wisdom for aybar and izturis and morales and napoli and rivera all to be as outstanding as this july has made them look.

Those same players
had that same speed before this year. Aybar, Figgins and Izturis didn’t just get fast.

i meant
some of those young guys could have experienced speed-independent improvement in their offensive abilities. at least it’s more theoretically plausible for a guy with less than 500 ML ABs to experience a big leap in OPS whereas if a 5-year veteran does, you can be almost certain it is a statistical aberration. Regardless, I think most of their gaudy offense is due to luck and not fundamental improvement in the offensive prowess of those players.
I should have been more clear about it the distinction, but that was separate from my point that their team speed probably adds a few points to their high team BABIP.

Angels' Schedule Might Cool Them Off
I think the Angels have benefited this month from a schedule that’s ideal for hitters—facing Baltimore, KC, Minn., and the Yankees (granted their staff has a low WHIP, but relatively high ERA). Next month, I would predict that the Halo bats will cool off a bit when they have to face the White Sox, Tigers, and Toronto—when do they finally play the Mariners again? (Although with Bedard out, they should drop off a bit.)

One more thing
Angels have exceeded their Pythagorean W-L by 5 wins, which I think the most in the majors (1 more than NYY)—so they’ve enjoyed some good fortune and should return back to earth soon.

didnt they have
a big disparity in W-L and Pythagorean W-L last year? what a lucky bunch!
