I don't know why

Everybody was giving him so much shit for that opinion.

It’s not just that they were 4.5 back. The roster just doesn’t look too promising right now for whatever reason.

I wouldn’t say that all chances are gone, but I wouldn’t be placing big money on it, either.

it’s fairly common for team’s to come back from that deficit.

x

As I said, it’s NOT JUST THAT THEY WERE 4.5 BACK.

The offense blows, there’s a constant stream of DL trips, and the history of teams returning from X# games behind doesn’t tell you anything about the attendant circumstances.

by brettgardner on Jul 27, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

the following

Kinsler, Hamilton, Franky’s injuries, Angels’ offensive production (there are more, but I think these are the main ones that I think will [or at least should] bounce back.

by BuckyB on Jul 27, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Well

I think Hamilton is still hurt for one. Second, I think any regression of LA’s offense will be counteracted by the improvement from early unluckiness with their pitching.

More than anything, regression seems to imply equal conditions, and that doesn’t appear to be the case right now (injuries, etc.).

by brettgardner on Jul 27, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Does anyone know options-wise whether Texas could send Hamilton to AAA for a week or so to try and get his groove back?

I’m sure Hamilton would disagree, but he is a major boner-killer this year

by BuckyB on Jul 27, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

yes they could

I like to give Adam a hard time about some things he says

But I fully agree with his reasoning with that statement. And one win against KC isn’t enough to turn me around. This is a flawed team who needs to get lucky (or LAA unlucky) to make the playoffs

Go Rice Owls!

and really

one of the reasons they are in the hunt is because LA got kind of unlucky with their starting pitching

and one of the reasons that we aren't ahead by 4.5 games

is because Tex has gotten kind of unlucky with their hitting

by BuckyB on Jul 27, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions

You really think

We’ve been unlucky?

I call it being exposed.

by brettgardner on Jul 27, 2009 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions

So you think

Hamilton, Kinsler, Davis, and Salty are hitting at their appropriate levels?

by BuckyB on Jul 27, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry

I see above that you think Hambone is injured, but the other 3…

by BuckyB on Jul 27, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Kinsler

Is the only one I’m genuinely shocked by.

Salty’s beginning to flesh out as a league average-ish catcher, though I’m surprised by his reversion in the plate discipline area. It’s possible that he could still develop into more, but I don’t see any reason to expect it right now so as to call his performance unlucky.

Davis is shocking, but is it really unlucky? We’re not talking batted balls that guys are just making great plays on. Dude’s striking out at monstrous levels. Of course, I think he’s better than that, and eventually will be a very good player, but right now he’s a killer.

by brettgardner on Jul 27, 2009 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

And one win against KC isn’t enough to turn me around.

Seems to me like it was one loss against KC that’s got everyone so pessimistic.

by octoberty on Jul 27, 2009 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Nah

It’s the horrible offense.

by brettgardner on Jul 27, 2009 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Were going on 2 months now with a horrible offense.

I dont know why 1 loss after a 5 game winning streak has everyone so pessimistic.

by octoberty on Jul 27, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

It was a really bad loss

The offense got violated by Luke Hochevar and Joakim Soria for 9 innings. I’m pretty sure that’s what got everyone pessimistic.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

what about a series sweep against Boston?

what about a 7-2 record vs the Angels?

A win against KC isn’t enough to inspire me either, but there are indicators that this team is in contention and could make the playoffs. I thought the “stick a fork in them” comment indicates that he doesn’t believe the team is in contention and has no chance to make the playoffs. I don’t see that.

Exactly

The Rangers don’t have any control over dogfights for the Central or East, and if three teams in each of those divisions continue with the fratricide, who knows what record could take the Wild Card? It’s still possible for two AL West teams to pull away a little bit.

A 5-1 record vs. BOS and 7-2 vs. LAA...

…doesn’t matter if the Rangers are .500-ish against everyone else and the Angels are .667 against everyone else. When it’s time to schedule the playoffs, they don’t look at a team’s record vs. specific other teams, they look at overall record. We could go 93-69 but if the Angels are 94-68 and the second-place team in the AL East is 95-67, the Rangers are screwed even if they’re 17-2 against LAA.

So, chances of a trade of any kind?

I give it 85%

and maybe a 40% chance that it is a high impact pitcher (I would say high impact player but there doesn’t seem to be any high impact bats available).

I don't think I am

Part of it was something that Dan said (and I had also been thinking but he said it better) in that we have a ton of mid level prospects and it just makes too much sense for us to start getting rid of some of them (maybe paired with a vet who’s going to leave anywya) now to shore up the bullpen or get a bench bat. These types of trades are fairly common and we almost have to make some of these trades to relieve the 40 situation.

But the other part of it is that Halladay is pretty much tops for me. Maybe 1 out of 3 or 4 guys that you can count on as a TORG. When he is actually available and you as the Rangers are in a very unique position of having the best minor league system, I think there is an internal pressure to get it done. The same thing can be said (but to a lesser degree) for Lee.

Obviously, if GM’s throw around bullshit requests and play hardball or really have no intention of trading to us (maybe Halladay never ok’d a trade to the Rangers and they are just trying to use us to drive up price), then it’s not going to happen. But I think the Rangers might recognize that while they may be in a better position to make a playoff run next year, they might never have the opportunity to acquire Lee or Halladay (or any other high impact player) that might be available.

What are your trade odds?

The Rangers didn’t make a deal last year at the trade deadline and they didn’t make one in the winter either.

Both times Ryan expressed profound frustration and there’s no way JD doesn’t bring him back something good with this team in contention.
