Tuesday a.m. Rangers stuff
13 games over, the high water mark since the end of the 2004 season, and 2.5 games back of Anaheim.
Tommy Hunter continues to impress...obviously, he isn't a 2.00 ERA pitcher, but he has a FIP of 3.98 and an xFIP of 4.76, and I'll take that any day from a late sandwich pick from 2007.
Hunter's first appearance in the majors this year, he was activated for game 1 of a doubleheader and optioned before game 2 started, so, as he told Jeff Wilson yesterday, his goal this latest time he came up was to be here long enough to unpack his bags. He's done that and a whole lot more.
Josh Hamilton has been moved down in the order to try to help him relax and get back on track.
Richard Durrett talks about the possibility of adding Adam Dunn. Dunn is owed $12 million next year, would probably be limited to DH here in Texas, is a lefty, and is probably going to be expensive in terms of prospects.

Not that im questioning moving down
Hamilton but why does he get moved down while Kinsler continues to hit leadoff?

I doubt Kinsler moves this year
If 16 for your last 102 doesn’t get you moved out of the leadoff spot, then I don’t know what does. He popped up a friggin bunt!

Im not
talking about moving both of them down to the bottom third of the lineup. I would merely suggest move Kinsler to more of a power position such as 3,4, or 5. I know Kinsler is scuffling a bit this yr but he still has an OPS+ of 105. In this lineup that is not bottow 3rd material.
Didnt mean to insinuate moving both to the bottom third.

I agree
Murphy leading off (I also advocate Andrus, because I think he can focus on getting that OBP up more if told to, but many don’t agree with that), with Young still in 2nd, then Kinsler to 3rd, Hamilton 4th, Cruz 5th, etc.

That's a real good point
Let’s face it, Kinsler has been an absolute dogshit leadoff hitter this year (.242 Avg, .314 OBP), especially lately (.151 avg and .198OPB in July). There is absolutely no reason he should get the most ABs on this team until his bat shows some signs of life.
A Murphy/Andrus platoon would be much more effective at the top. Move Kinsler to 5th or 6th.

Against lefties,
sure. He’s almost got a 400 OBP against them, and Murphy can’t hit lefties to save his life.

If you are going to hit Andrus leadoof
you might as well keep Kinsler there. Ian kills lefties and struggles against RHP.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

I guess the point of moving Ian is getting him into a more natural slot, period.

most likely
he’ll be a crappy leadoff hitter due to a mediocre OBP in the bigs.

but we shouldn’t covet our prospects too much. Some of them should be traded for ML quality players.
Perhaps.
I’m not in the “Hold on to everyone!” mold of fan at all, but I don’t want to trade prospects just for the sake of not holding holding on to everyone, if that makes any sense.
If we have a chance to add a piece that will really help us, I have no problem dipping into our system to make that happen.
But questions abound.
Which guys are dealable and which ones aren’t?
Is now the time to make that move?
Is that guy out there right now, and would the price be at all reasonable even if he is?

I'm saying it's hard to figure out where exactly
we are. If the offense picks up, wouldn’t Roy Halladay be the one piece we need to get us into the pennant discussion?
I think you got it exactly with that first comment.
I mean, to expect us to suddenly start hitting like it’s ‘08 again is a little silly at this point, but to expect some improvement over the next two months wouldn’t be all that crazy. There’s some real talent here.
But given all of the uncertainty around the team right now, I’d be very hesitant to sell off a number of high-ceiling near major league ready talent for a guy like Doc or Lee, both of whom I super-duper love.
I dunno.
I guess I just think that when there’s as much uncertainty about a club as there is with this one, both performance-wise and in terms of our 2/3 year financial picture, we would probably be best served steering clear of doing anything major at this point in time.

so after reading a ton of fangraphs and sites of that nature
apparently I am way undervaluing the value of prospects. I feel like I need to look into their calculations but, for instance, they say that the holliday deal was horribly lopsided and I kind of agreed, initially. But their numbers are ridiculous. I feel like they would think one good and mid level prospect with some filler was just compensation for halladay.
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
I thought the Holliday deal was about right.
I think the A’s were able to get a bit of a nice deal just cause the key guy in the deal from the Card’s side didn’t have a long term place on the big club and so was kind of burning a hole in their pocket.
But overall I think it was about right.
Holliday is really good and really good players cost you at the deadline.

And it may indeed turn out that way.
But that ignores the value of having production NOW.
The Cardinals aren’t making this trade for the next 4-7 years.
The A’s are.
The A’s get the much greater chance for production over the next 4-7 years, but the Cardinals get present production and that’s worth a ton to certain teams at certain points.
That’s how these deals work.

6 of the last 12 are head to head.
As long as we are reasonably close going into that stretch, there is a real chance. There is about 40% of the season left to be played. Way too early to be giving up on playoff hopes for a team 10+ games over .500.

just pretty pissed at the leader of this community giving up when there’s what, 63 games left?
I’d say we have to be within 3 games with 20 left before I start really getting concerned. But if we’d have fallen further from 4.5 it could’ve gotten pretty muggy around here

We still have 10 games against LAA, which we win at least 6 maybe 7.
Because good pitching (fielding) beats good hitting, which puts us about even with them. I still like our chances.

That means either Williams or Pinella is right
I know Pinella won with Cincy, but I can’t remember if he ever won with his many AL clubs.
I’m more confident about Dick Williams.

Williams won League titles with the Bosox

After '64...
Johnny Keane went from STL to NYY, and Yogi Berra went from NYY to NYM.
Philadelphia and Cincy tied for second in the NL, but Fred Hutchinson died in the offseason after ’64.
So, Gene Mauch (Philly) and Al Lopez (CWS, who finished second in the AL in ’64), managed the 1965 All-Star Game.
And yes, I absolutely Googled that.

The ’70’s were my wheelhouse…It’s nothing to be really proud of but I can name several members of teams that played in the ’70’s with close to Rain Man accuracy.
‘74 A’s – Managed by Alvin Dark
C – Fosse or Duncan
1B – Tenace
2B – DGreen (who killed the Dodgers in that WS with his defense)
SS – Campy
3B – Bando
LF – Rudi
CF- North
RF – Reggie Jax
DH – ?
Charlie F used to run a lot of DH’s so I can’t remember which one he used that year, possibly Billy Williams or Felipe/Jesus Alou. Claudell Washington also came up that year as a 20 year old and saw a lot of pt as well.
He did have Herb Washington as a pinch runner.
Pitching….Holtzman, Blue, Hunter were his big 3 starters but can’t rememeber who else.
In the bully he was rolling with Fingers, Knowles, Lindblad and possibly Horacio Pina.
As God as is my witness and on the heads of everybody I hold true to me, I didn’t look up anything I wrote above.
It’s also nothing to be overly proud of knowing but it’s just there.

Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
I knew this because Dark managed the '74 A's (which was in my memory wheelhouse) and because I'm a Dodgers
fan I know waaaaaaaaay too much about the SFO Giants (our biggest rival back in the day).
Before 2002, they went to one World Series (1962) and I thought but wasn’t sure that Dark was their manager. Wanna say there were some racial allegations v. Dark or he may have been God Squadder (or perhaps both) but not sure.
Off the top of my head – ’62 Giants …
C – Tom Haller (later became a Dodger)
1B – McCovey or Cepeda
2B-
SS -
3B – Jim Davenport
LF – Felipe Alou (Jesus & Manny were also on team)
CF – Mays
RF – McCovey/Cepeda (don’t remember how they used them)
Rolled with Gaylord Perry & Juan Marichal as their 1 & 2 starters.
Great pennant race with the Dodgers that year. Dodgers, with Maury Wills stealing 104 bases & Tommy Davis knocking in 153 (?) RBI gacked at the end and there was huge controversy with Alston/Durocher. Young kid named Koufax (finally) showed a lot of promise that year.
Yankees won Game 7 of World Series 1-0 at Candlestick when McCovey hit a bullet caught by Bobby Richardson with Willie Mays stranded at 3B.
Again, I didn’t look up a thing….but most of that season was played before I was born. It’s just baseball minutae rolling around my mind so yes, I knew Alvin Dark was their manager.

Hamilton, to me, looks far more lost at the plate
than Kinsler.
Discussing hitting technique is one of the quickest ways to give me tired head but from a layman’s pov without looking at any video, Josh seems to be dropping his hands during the pitcher’s motion and he can’t catch up. As a hitter you want to go from Point A to Point B in one quick motion and Josh’s hands seem to be all fouled up. I’m going to watch for it again tonight.
I think we need to consider moving DMurphy up to lead-off.

Got to get on base for that to be an issue, something Kinsler hasn’t done much of lately…
Dunn
Dunn’s 2009 splits:
vs. RHP: .283/.433/.609 (298 PAs)
vs. LHP; .268/.339/.438 (124 PAs)
Blalock’s 2009:
vs. LHP: .200/.210/.400 (81 PAs)
vs. RHP: .274/.325/.553 (240 PAs)
If only they could platoon at DH.
Do you really think Dunn will cost a lot?
Washington has got to be kicking itself for signing him for that much money. They don’t want Dunn on that team – he’s a butcher in the field – an average guy in the stands could play left better than Dunn plays. He needs to be a DH somewhere.
That said, I think Washington would trade Dunn for a couple of serviceable players who could step into the team right now. Maybe something like Davis + Vallejo/Lemon + Boscan
Go Rice Owls!
and they would pay?

I don't know if I make that deal
I probably wouldn’t. I don’t think Davis is anywhere near a 50/50 shot to put up Dunn-like numbers, but as is pointed out, Davis can actually field. But really it is the money. Davis for Dunn straight up, not $$ difference? I take Dunn
But I don’t think that package is that big, and I think that is something that Washington would take. Yeah they wanted Dunn before the season, but he really hasn’t worked out for them the way they wanted…

Willingham is going to cost more than you’d probably think at first blush, especially since he’s heating up this close to the finish line.
I’d do The Newberg’s deal in a heartbeat, but I think the ultimate price on Willingham is gonna be a good deal more than that.

That is my biggest concern, I think
The price, especially after last night, is going to be way too high for a guy who is having a career year. I still think he would bea big jolt for this offense though
I'm assuming we cut Andruw Jones to make room for him on the 25?
Just how big of an upgrade is that, really?
Andruw can be frustrating at times, but he also is showing genuine RH power and has an .866 OPS and a 14% BB rate.

Willingham...
And according to AJM, we would just DFA him next year anyway. Because, y’know $5M is too much to pay for a guy coming off of a year with a .975 OPS and a career .850 OPS
Non-tender
A team with a small market budget and Smoak and Davis both ML ready can’t afford to have a $5-6 million bench player.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 28, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions
If he continues to play like he has been
he won’t be a bench player. If he can actually do so is the question.
If he still is putting up a +400 OBP and 950 + OPS
LF, 1b, DH. That is a big IF of course, but well all saw what Milton Bradley did for this offense last year. He could provide the same.
I think there is very little reason...
…to believe he’s going to do that.
If you keep him around, you pretty much have to trade Davis, Smoak, or Cruz this offseason.

I truly believe
either Smoak or Davis will be gone within the next 3 years as part of some kind of trade package

So..
What if the Rangers could do something like Davis + Beavan for Cain this offseason and have Smoak and Willingham for 1st/DH? Then does it makes sense to pay $5M for Willingham’s approx .900 OPS?
And I don’t necessarily mean that deal in particular, just meant one of Davis/Smoak is gone for a controllable young arm
Here's the thing
The Rangers have quite a few controllable young arms. I’m not convinced they are going to rush out there and move part of their 1B surplus to get another one.

I have no idea how the market’s going to play out this Winter.
My guess is he’s gonna want a 3-4 year deal and think he’s worth it, but I dunno… man, that’d really screw up our financial picture next year if he accepted and ended up getting 7-9 million.

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
I would do anything to change up our offense
We need to try to pull a Billy Martin…anything to get these guys out of their funk:
“Sometimes he would literally draw a lineup out of a hat if the team was struggling to win such as on April 21, 1977 with the Yankees and August 13, 1972 with the Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader, in the year before the introduction of the designated hitter.”
I remember hearing/reading about Martin doing that
but the only problem with that and a lot of other changes is that we’re still winning.

"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Are we going to find a way to get someone better than Mark Hamburger?
Despite the fact that Eddie is not as good as he was last year? If we can’t get someone significantly better, then it won’t contribute to our downfall, at all
Guardado has been lucky of late.
His BABIP is down to .262, and when that comes up, having him in the bullpen is gonna bite us in the ass sometime.
Bottom line I expect Guardado to implode down the stretch, a la Gagne, and I’d just like to be rid of him before it happens. I don’t care what he brings in return (which would be nothing, as he’s not worth anything).
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
oooo I misunderstood you
I thought you were referring to the potential return, I agree whole heartedly with you, in that case
The problem is...
Pirate Murray is untested in the majors. He comes in and blows 2-3 games in the stretch and you are talking serious problems. Eddie at least has experience.
"Support the Dutch Oven"
by RangerFloppy on Jul 28, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't really give a damn about experience.
Put your best players on the field, and let them do their thing. It’s not like Murray would be a setup guy or anything – all he’d need to be is a LOOGY, the one thing this bullpen doesn’t have.
Of course, this is Ron Washington’s bullpen we’re talking about, so I realize there would be a definite chance that Murray would wind up misused… but considering Guardado can and has been misused as well, it’s kind of a wash isn the Wash department.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Are you really that sure...
…Murray is better than Guardado?
Don’t you think that releasing Guardado would cause some waves in the clubhouse?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 28, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions
Yes.
And I don’t give a shit about the clubhouse. They’ll learn to survive without him.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
And if they dont
They dont need to be playing major league baseball. Its part of the sport. Trades happen. Players get cut and sent packing. If we have a bunch of babies that cant handle an old veteran who is past his day getting cut, then we have much bigger issues.
Elvis has "shook up" Arlington!!
The reality is...
…than in any of the 30 clubhouses, releasing a popular player is going to cause waves.
Especially one who the players are going to look at and say, “Hey, he’s been doing his job this year,” and are going to view the move as one that makes the team worse, not better.
Then you are putting A.J. Murray in a bad situation in the clubhouse, and I don’t see that you’re really making any sort of upgrade.
At the risk of sounding like one of those “watch the games” people, this isn’t fantasy baseball or a sim league…there are personal/political repercussions to moves.

Is moving Josh down really expected to help?
It may help the team because a cold bat will get fewer plate appearances, but I can’t see it helping Josh. Do you really think that hitting further down in the order will take pressure off him at let him relax? I doubt Wash was telling him “OK, Josh, I’ve got you batting 3rd. The whole team is counting on your. Don’t let us down.” The only pressure on Josh was coming from within himself, which is probably true of all players. He’s not going to be any more relaxed hitting 7th. Hell, he might put more pressure on himself to try to regain his 3rd slot.

You know, it just hit me last night.
And I’m sure it only just hit me because I’m never here anymore, but this is probably going to be one of the better Rangers teams in history. On pace for a pythag record of like 90 wins, despite all the offensive frustration.
So despite the fact that we’re not front runners and may just miss the playoffs, I didn’t expect to even be close this year. This really good season is coming with an offense that we can probably expect to be better in coming years and tons of young players yet to hit their primes or even come on, and it’s ahead of schedule.
