Cliff Lee traded to the Philadelphia Phillies
Ken Rosenthal reports that Cliff Lee is heading to the Phillies:
The Phillies have reached agreement on a trade that would bring them left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from the Indians for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to major-league sources.
Knapp is apparently the key guy.

Would Font, Lemon, Teagarden/Salty, and Tommy Hunter have accomplished this trade for Texas?

I agree
Hunter, despite his ‘Bama roots, might be something special. He’s young and cheap—I don’t think I’d part with him, even to get Halladay, right now.
What did you think 6 weeks ago?
Maybe you’ve always liked him a lot, I don’t know, but don’t let one good run effect your opinion TOO much.
the preceding post was a great success.
I know--but it's such an uncanny run
Maybe you’re right—he’s at his peak value, but it would tough to let him go

True
Even involving someone like Beavan OR Beltre would have been acceptable. This money issue with Hicks sucks balls, they have to find a way to not jeopardize a potential playoff run this year.
So Francisco wouldn’t have been an upgrade over any of the present guys?

Absolutely
makes sense salary-wise too, he’s making much less than Halladay. I don’t get it really. I wonder if Riccardi’s asking price goes down. Certainly puts Texas back in play for him since I imagine JP doesn’t want to trade him to Boston or New York. If they demand only one of the top four, we have to do it.
Went and looked at Ben Francisco's #'s.
Didn’t know he was that old, and that he’s not nearly as good as I thought he was.
2010 Philly OF
Every current starter is either under contract or team control for next year. Maybe Francisco will be the 4th OF? Victorino injured his ankle recently, maybe he can take some time off and not have it hurt the team all that much? Fangraphs won’t load for me, so does anybody have some defensive numbers for Francisco? How does he compare to the current starters?
by Excel Hearts Choi on Jul 29, 2009 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Goes both ways
1) teams don’t have a fallback option if they can’t land Halladay
2) takes the Phillies out of the running for Doc.

From what I saw, the M's plan on extending Wilson, meaning it's not just for this year
Isn’t Snell a “for the future” kind of guy too? Seems like this is a good way to get rid of a crappy hitter (Cedeno) and get some pieces for the future, with what happens this year being a bonus. Washburn isn’t part of the team’s future either so I would think they’re working the phones on him.
Snell
Snell is definitely for the future. I don’t necessarily agree with the pronouncement that the M’s are buyers. Maybe the hold on to Washburn, let the season play itself out, hope for the best, and collect the draft picks. I don’t know, but these moves help now and in the future (especially if the sign Wilson).

They've pretty much said they're gonna pick up Wilson's option for next year, so he'll help at least 1.3 years.

Did not know it was an option; should’ve checked Cot’s. Thanks for the clarification.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Jul 29, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions
Not so sure...
I think this hurts the market for Doc and the Jays. The Phillies got Lee without giving up any of the guys that the Jays wanted for Halladay. I still think JP really need to deal Halladay. They have a weak system and won’t be able to win the East next year. I think this deal forces the Jays to lower their asking price. There are still other lower tier pitchers available that other teams could settle for rather than giving up the farm for Halladay and I think other teams are going to be more willing to do that unless the price comes down.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Thought about it more and I agree with that
Phillies got to keep Drabek and pick up a nice pitcher. Maybe JP will get it through his skull that people really aren’t in the mood to screwed even for Hallady.

It has been reported pretty widely, both locally and nationally, that the Rangers can’t add payroll, that they’d have to get the other team to eat what was left this year on any substantive deal or move another player to make room in the budget.

We sit here thinking that Perez and Smoak are our golden boys, but it may be that Toronto really would prefer Font and Davis to them, for whatever reason. Quantity Over Quality
KLaw said that Cleveland took quantity over quality. Knapp is the wild card, but Law dislikes his arm action and was probably available for the trade because he has been shutdown due to shoulder fatigue. The other players are close to the Majors, but don’t have a high ceiling. According to Law, these prospects are similar to their farm system (no real guy that jumps out as you as a future above average player). If Law were to do the trade, he would ask for only two, higher ceiling prospects as opposed to what they got. As far as he knows, Cleveland did not make this deal because of money.

From SI
Right now, the Rangers have one of the strongest farm systems in the sport, bolstered in large part by that July 2007 Teixeira deal. But Texas is strapped for cash. The Rangers have told teams that they would trade from their bountiful prospect base as long as teams pick up a lot of veteran salary. Texas badly wants to add Halladay. For now, though, Toronto is showing no desire to eat any money to trade arguably the best pitcher in baseball.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joel_sherman/07/29/significant.trades/index.html
I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.
If that's true it would piss me off
You don’t throw in prospects to save some cash. That’s what was so annoying about the Abreu to NYY deal from a few years ago. All they had to do was pick up his salary.

It's possible
But with winter trades teams can’t be sure what they’ve got. When you do a mid-season trade teams have played a half season and know whether they’ve got a serious shot or not which could make them willing to give more if it puts them over the top.

"Gardner, What you should do is tip your cap and then move forward with your tail tucked snugly in your gash."

There are no unbeatable juggernauts in MLB this year and this Ranger team is positioned quite well for the stretch run with two avenues to the post-season available.
Nobody knows what’s going to happen in a World Series. ‘69 Mets, ’73 Mets (who extended the great A’s dynasty team to 7 games), ’81 Dodgers, ’88 Dodgers, ’97 Marlins, ’03 Marlins, ’06 Cards….planned for or not, the window of opportunity is open.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Gardner, What you should do is tip your cap and then move forward with your tail tucked snugly in your gash."
And that explains why you call TR Sullivan "the house organ"?
Bitter at everything, man. Cool your blood pressure.

TR
No, he calls TR the “house organ” because he doesn’t like that Sullivan isn’t critical of the team more often, despite being an employee of said team.
Surprising, really, that TR wouldn’t criticize the people who sign his paychecks more often…

TR didn’t criticize the team when he was with the Startelegram either.

He was also a beat writer then.
Beat writers and team-employed writers are the last two groups of people I expect to launch into scathing criticism of the team they cover. I don’t know why that’s such a surprising concept to you.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
Sportswriters like TR Sullivan are annoying
because they tell you the things the ballclub wants you to hear without questioning them.
He’s also boring as hell to read.

not from me, mind you, but from this site.

the indians aren’t exactly great right now

Their offense is doing pretty well lately and Laffey is ok.
’tis not hopeless

I'm listening to the game on Cleveland's radio feed
And an ad was talking about Indians fandom and fans having a Chief Wahoo tattoo and being a card-carrying member of the Cliff Lee fanclub.
Not no more.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
i assume
if we can’t afford lee then we probably can’t afford victor martinez either right? this deadline blows

Nice Shoppach
Allows a runner to reach by letting a strikeout pitch get by him, allows him to 2nd by letting another get by him. both catchable.
the preceding post was a great success.
geez
M’s steal Snell and Wilson and Phillies get Lee for that??
Maybe if we had a crappy farm we could have done both…
usa
Kendrick and his sparkling .259 AVG is at the plate.
Runners, first and second. Two out.
Some close line-drive fouls by Kendrick in this at-bat, as the Angels seek to capitalize on a Shoppach error

apparently JD hasn't "wowed" toronto yet...
“We’d have to be wowed,” Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told ESPN’s Peter Gammons. “And we haven’t been wowed.”

You are obsessed with bodily wastes A turd being held under my nose, this team being a steaming pile, Jonny Donuts having a stinky diaper, the front office pissing themselves, the team crapping the bed…
I think you should seek counselling.

I could see him selling Ricciardi on the deal...
You need a little young pitching to spice up your team???? POW!!! Blake bevean…..you need a toolsy outfield….BAM we will throw Engle Beltre.
Everyone loves my nuts, but you will love Wilmer Font!
I’d slap a hooker to make that deal!

I'm not big on the Phillies, or Cliff Lee for that matter...
but how disgusted must Mets fans be right?
Not only are they terrible, not only is that organization caving from within, but now the first place team in their division (and defending World Series champs) just landed the defending AL Cy Young award winner.
so you're saying we should go get Santana...

think he's available?
:) That’d be cool.
ISmoak + Holland for Halladay and then
Feliz + Perez for Santana
Then, Bud, can we have more money?

Nick Johnson very, very available on the cheap
“More likely, Washington will in the next few days explore trade possibilities for reliever Joe Beimel, utility man Willie Harris and first baseman Nick Johnson. The market for Johnson has taken a serious dive, if only because Boston and San Francisco — two teams that had an interest in the soon-to-be-free agent — both acquired first basemen within the last week. But Beimel, currently in a one-year deal with Washington, and Harris, in a two-year deal, both have value to contenders. Beimel has a 1.89 ERA since June 1. "
No acceptable excuses for this not to happen.

He is still owed ~$2.5M for this year.

Well, at least Lee is off the table and not headed for La la land.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Although, on the downside, this elminates the Phils as suitors for Halladay
Which brings us a tiny step closer to trading a bundle for him. Halladay probably wasn’t going to go before Lee, but I would’ve rather seen Lee go to a team that hadn’t been among the frontrunners for Halladay – less temptation for us to do something stupid.

Really?
4:24pm: Ricciardi tells MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian that he probably won’t deal Halladay to the Phillies now that they have Lee. The Jays are still talking with other teams, including the Red Sox.

Heh, wouldn't that be something, though?
The Phills turn around and deal Drbaek, Brown and Happ for Halladay… roll into the playoffs with a loaded lineup and a rotation featuring Doc, Hamels and Lee.
