Nothing wrong with Barbara Feldon

I may have been 6 years old but my pants walked all around the room when Get Smart came on television.

Props to Max over at 88.7 for playing Beginnings by Chicago.

Sorry, Max

The Glimmer Twins, 1974

If not available, “Tumbling Dice” in JD’s honor and the trade deadline would be suffice.

They're a 3 piece instrumental band from Chicago.

Think Explosions in the Sky with the fat cut out, and more hard rock/metal guitar work at times. They’re fantastic.

As a drummer, their guy behind the kit (Dave Turncrantz) is phenomenal.

Russian Circles

How do they compare to Pelican?

Cool

I got to see Pelican back in May opening for Isis. I must be the only person who’s into them who doesn’t mind the drummer.

The Isis song you played earlier tonight (which is one of my favorites) was their encore for that show.

by RCCook on Jul 30, 2009 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I almost went to that show.

I saw Pelican with Circa Survive and Thrice last April. I don’t mind the drummer that much, but he does make me cringe at times, and I’m not usually a stickler for specifics.

Some drummers are, so it drives them crazy. He sometimes looks like he screws up his own beats. Again, I don’t mind it too much, but others do.

by Maximilian on Jul 30, 2009 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I can imagine if you’re a drummer, you probably notice it more.

I’ve been to see Isis twice- this year and the 2007 show in Fort Worth. The only disappointment I had is that Jesu couldn’t get their work permits approved in time to play the 2007 show. I also missed seeing Godflesh open for Sepultura a number of years back (got to the show late) which frustrates me to no end, as I’m pretty much one of the biggest Justin Broadrick fans on the planet.

Sigur Ros

Do they ever tour the US? I’d definitely go see them.

On an unrelated note, the Tool show in San Antonio last Friday was freaking awesome. I could barely see Maynard, but with all the crazy shit going on the video screens, it was enough to watch those and listen to the band at the same time.

I heard from a co-worker that the show here Saturday was equally bad-ass.

The thing with Byrd

is despite his hacking/sucking this year, he’s still been decently productive and sadly one of the better hitters. I don’t think there would be such a huge problem if he were hitting 6th or 7th.

But the fact that we need to protect Ron from continuing to make a fool of himself night after night by playing Byrd and batting him cleanup is why Byrd has got to go. Ron will brush a night like this off and keep on throwing him out there, while coming up with some retarded excuse to sit Nellie.

ABs per HR in 2009...

(200+ ABs)

Pujols: 10.4
Ibanez: 11.6
Andruw Jones: 11.8
AGonzalez: 12.5
A-Rod: 13.0
Dunn: 13.3
Reynolds: 13.3
Cruz: 13.5
Branyan: 13.6
CPena: 14.3
Teixeira: 14.7
Morneau: 14.7
LScott: 14.7

Not bad for $500K.

by Texas_Dawg on Jul 29, 2009 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

Hes essentially been his typical self hitting wise

Of course at DH its far far less valuable than as a gold glove CF.

I do want them to get another bat in here to share time with him and hank, but he hasn’t been a disaster b any means.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Jul 29, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Because Hank can't hit lefties

And Jones can easily go into another 1-25 run and need to be subbed more.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Jul 29, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Blah.

All players have slumps.

He’s a .381 wOBA on the year. Only Young (.385) has a higher wOBA this year.

by Texas_Dawg on Jul 29, 2009 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok but he sucked the previous 2 years and has looked pretty bad at times this year

He is highly unlikely to maintain THAT high of a hr/ab ratio that has kept his numbers solid despite the 235 average.

Look, I’ve been defending AJ a lot this season, I’m not one of the people who complains when he plays. But hes certainly a flawed player at this point and some insurance couldn’t hurt. Then you include blalock with his inability to hit lefties and sub 300 obp…

And then consider both of them will be gone next year and some of the trade options (some would be gone too) might have a role in supporting Smoak breaking in or whatever works out next year… it would just make sense to make a small deal to get another bat in here. Not talking about smoak for an all star.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Jul 29, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

So he had a couple bad years but figured out his problems and fixed them...
He is highly unlikely to maintain THAT high of a hr/ab ratio that has kept his numbers solid despite the 235 average.

Sure… but he can still have very good numbers even with a decline. There are some guys on that list having great seasons that are a substantial amount lower on that list.

But hes certainly a flawed player at this point and some insurance couldn’t hurt.

Yes it could.

It could mean sitting one of your best batters when there’s no reason he shouldn’t be playing.

And I actually think there’s reason to believe that Jones will keep up something close to this .380 wOBA pace through the end of the year. He has easily the highest BB rate on the team, and he has a very unlucky team low .222 BABIP. No way the BABIP stays that low over the course of the year… and I think we’re seeing that lately with his averaging rebounding.

by Texas_Dawg on Jul 29, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

For fucks sake

why is last year relevent? Its pretty much an outlier in his career. He’s had enough ABs this year to say he is what he is. A very streaky hitter with low average and lots of pop.

by DJCahill on Jul 30, 2009 6:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep

His numbers this year are pretty much right in line with his career numbers with a little more pop. I don’t think the ABs he got the last two years are enough to drag his career numbers down that much so this is basically the Andruw Jones we hoped to get when we signed him.

by Josey Wales on Jul 30, 2009 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure I keep Jones the rest of the year

I would just only play him sparingly and hit him 6th in the lineup when he does play.

As for fixing the offense, I don’t know. Josh Hamilton getting out of his season long funk would do alot to fix this offense by being a big bat in the middle of the order. Id hit Nellie Cruz cleanup even though I don’t think hes an ideal cleanup hitter. The only thing I think we need is a guy who hits LHP consistently and I don’t know if we can afford that. Whether it be the salary we can’t afford or overpaying in prospects to get them here with the other team paying the salary.

by Josey Wales on Jul 30, 2009 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions

I only move Byrd if im blown away

Like it or not the guy is a key guy on this team. He plays hard every night, is a team leader in the clubhouse, and isn’t hitting .230. Hes exactly like Eddie Guardado or Jason Jennings in the fact that you can’t just give these guys away to make room for some rookie in a pennant race without creating tension and hurting the clubhouse. I wish he didn’t hit cleanup or 5th in the lineup but thats on the manager not the GM.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jul 30, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Is it seriously a question to keep AJ?

he’s the best OPS and the third best OBP on the team. He hits both lefties and righties pretty well.

I get rid of Hank, since he can only hit righties before I get rid of AJ.

However, I’m not sure you can fix the real problems with this offense, because the big problem is you either need to snap Kinsler and Hamilton out of their funks, or you need to bench them half the time until their funks pass. Kinsler has been fairly crappy for almost 2 months now, and Hamilton has been useless since coming back from his injury. Sadly, its not a big downgrade to sit Kinslers Ass down for Vizquel over the last month, and sitting out Hamilton is an upgrade.

Ridiculous

Jesus christ, as if I’m over the top bashing Jones. I made a passing mention of his recent decline for context.

If I put that much weight into last year I wouldn’t have said get a bat to supplement him and Blalock, I would have said DFA him.

he hit terribly after that 3 HR night then he’s hit a few HRs recently, but none of them have mattered, he hit one against the Royals when we won by 5 or so, he hit a couple tonight. He’s been productive, but that production since that 3 HR night has meant almost zero to us actually winning games. It would be nice if our DH actually consistently helped us win games

I know, hence my comment

How sick would that be…seriously

and they could still do it if they were willing to part w/Drabek

Sorry everyone

It’s my fault.

As we were driving to the game, the spousal unit asked me who was pitching for Detroit. I then set the over/under on Ranger strikeouts at 15.

I took the over.

Sure am glad O'Day pitched the 9th.......

…..Wash needed to protect that 13-4 deficit. Would hate to have O’Day available tomorrow night. But, he’s now pitched 2 nights in a row, so your best RH reliever on the 25 man roster won’t be able to be used.

I apologize if someone else has already bitched about this. I couldn’t fight thru the gameday thread with all of the wishful thinking trade proposals.

The other guys in the bullpen

Wilson, Grilli, Nippert

Nippert wasn’t available.

Grilli pitched two innings the night before.

There weren’t a whole lot of palatable options at that point.

Why not just leave JJ out there for a second inning?

Sometimes you gotta have a spare take one for the team........

……Jennings only threw 18 pitches, he should have pitched the 9th. Or left Fat Eddie in for a full inning or two.

by Hard8 on Jul 30, 2009 12:22 AM CDT reply actions

Agreed, no reason to burn O'Day in that game

Jennings could have finished it out

Return of the Mad Dog imminent?

From the Rangers’ Notes on Facebook:

The Rangers appear likely to call up Warner Madrigal from Oklahoma City to replace Guillermo Moscoso. Manager Ron Washington said the Rangers are expected to make a roster move Thursday to reinforce their bullpen and Madrigal is 2-0 with a 1.83 ERA for the RedHawks. He was taken out of the bullpen during the RedHawks game against Albuquerque on Wednesday.

Yeah, they can't callup Dozer like AJM wanted

Because he started today.

halladay trade

you think holland, andrus, kiker/beavan, and some other lower level guy would fetch halladay and scutaro + some money from the blue jays?

would you consider it?

by kumizi on Jul 30, 2009 1:47 AM CDT reply actions

Haha

yes, this reinforces my opinion that some posters here have been doing crack like it is the 70s again

wtf man…for you to even post that scares the shit out of me, did you dive into an empty pool before posting that?

as someone said yesterday, if that kind of deal happens…i will personally finance Josey to do whatever the fuck kind of evil shit he wants to do to JD

by Horns130 on Jul 30, 2009 3:51 AM CDT up reply actions

really?

That’s a little extreme. Elvis is still all about potential. Do we really know what he is going to end up being? He is extremely young but he has never put up big time numbers in the minors.

Yes he is great defensively but right now, Scutaro and Elvis are probably pretty equal MLB players. By trading for Halladay, you are trying to maximize your chances of winning in the next couple of years.

If getting a SS back, I would trade Andrus ahead of Smoak or Perez. And trade one of the Holland/Feliz duo instead of trading both and keeping Andrus.

Basically, if you have to trade 2 out of the top 5 to get Halladay, which two would you trade?

by kumizi on Jul 30, 2009 4:40 AM CDT up reply actions

to clarify

Im not saying go ahead and trade this package for Halladay.

Im saying what you consider trading that is realistic. And by realistic, I mean 2 out of top 5 have to be in there.

by kumizi on Jul 30, 2009 4:48 AM CDT up reply actions

ARE YOU FUCKING HIGH??

Scutaro might equal Jack Arias, but not Elvis, and Elvis has realized a LOT of his potential already this year

by blueballlefty on Jul 30, 2009 5:45 AM CDT up reply actions

are you retarded?

scutaro is a better major league player than elvis in 2009

There has been talk that our offense wasn't as good as it appeared it years past

because of high scoring games where opposing pitchers weren’t concentrating. Last nite, certainly had that feel when we put a little pressure on Verlander when score was 8-4 men at 2-3 and one out. He just blew out the next 2 batters to end threat.
