Happy birthday, Tommy Hunter, someone who I find myself pulling for to an irrational degree.

Does this mean Hunter sticks around for awhile?

I am sure this was not in the original plans. I posted this over there, but, you know, game over woohoo Rangers win!

Who could displace him?

I didn’t read up on harrison’s exact prospects but it didn’t appear he or bmac would be back soon.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Jul 3, 2009 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know bmac is gone for a good term, like always, and maybe even forever as a starter this time

But I thought Harrison was scheduled to be back after just the 15 days. If Hunter is pitching as he is now after 1 more start, no way would I replace him in the rotation with Harrison.

just curious Adam ...

why do you pull for Tommy so much?

I ask because I have the same feeling towards him and I’m not sure why.

I pull for any pitcher

on this team, it’s completely rational given the last decade.

Yeah,

this team is still at the point it could use those solid mid/back of the rotation guys who can give innings and be solid.

We need to start weeding out the guys like BMac that you just can’t count on. Its the guys like BMac that force this team to mess around with the Bensons of the world.

Do you really think that would help?

Holland just seeing a guy, another rookie, will improve him in which way?

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shouldn't that be something a pitcher learns in the minors?

And if so, does this mean Holland is here too early and needs the rest of the year to work it out at AA?

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well I'm in the He needs to be in the bullpen camp

and learn it there … although it’s really easy to rely completely on one pitch and be successful there

by texasraider on Jul 3, 2009 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hadn't thought of it that way

But you are right. If Holland goes to the bullpen, he can rely completely on the heat and be successful, thus never developing into a major league starter. But if he goes back to AAA and starts, he can work on developing all his pitches. No need for that work to be done in the majors.

Holland needs some secondary pitches to throw, first

Right now he really doesn’t have any.

Hunter at least has that curve.

by texasraider on Jul 3, 2009 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meh

I don’t really think watching another guy have success is going to suddenly give you confidence in pitches you haven’t been able to use successfully so far. The only way to do that is to get to a point where you can use them successfully. Hopefully Holland is on his way to that as long as he keeps starting, whether it’s here or OKC.

you're right

but he’s not going to be successful without those secondary pitches and the confidence to use them

I never saw him pitch in the minors but I find myself wondering why Holland was rated so high if he doesn’t ever use his secondary pitches.

So did he use them in the monors more or was he throwing 80-95% heat in the minors as well?

by texasraider on Jul 3, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He used the secondary stuff

Made a lot of hitters look silly with the changeup after they saw his mid-upper 90s fastball.

Yes, iPhone

It’s Pointstreak K-ForCE. 9.99 in the app store, but totally worth it. Usually if I go to the game alone I score with pencil and paper, and I’ll probably still do that, but this app is so easy to use I’m probably going to end up using it a lot even if I don’t go alone.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not?

For many years, when they only had 5 in the bullpen, multiple teams had only one lefty every year. Ryan is all about getting back to how things were – not judging every pitcher by the 100 pitch count, so why not change this too? It’s not like Eddie has been helpful, overall, to the Rangers in 2009.

Why?

Salty’s line against righthanders this year is .245 .303 .367 .670. And putting Salty at 1st base means that Teagarden catches and that’s just adding another weak bat to the lineup. Last, but not least, Salty doesn’t look too hot at 1st base.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Runs and hits aren't terribly relevant

Pedroia has a big edge in OBP, but Kinsler has a huge edge in slugging, and has been better defensively and stealing bases.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So?

Try these:

wOBA:
Kinsler .373
Pedroia: .343

UZR/150
Kinsler: 9.4
Padroia: 6.4

WAR:
Kinsler: 3.1
Pedroia: 1.9

Kinsler has been much more valuable both offensively and defensively, and is having a much better overall season.

Why is everyone so quick to anoint Smoak as the savior at 1st? He still is not hitting lefties worth a crap, yet Moreland is hitting well against both. I know Smoak was a higher draft pick, but shouldn’t production be more important?

Because Davis needs to be replaced, sooner not later

Not because he is a horrible player who will never make it, but because he needs to fix his strike out problem and that is not going to happen in the majors. And because the Rangers need to play their best possible 9 each day and Davis is not one of them.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

But Smoak isn’t the answer yet either. He has yet to hit from the right side in the minors, and he still hasn’t whiffed AAA pitching, either.

Smoak could easily be a player who skips AAA

As for hitting from the right side, I think he would be a better option than Davis right now. And the pressure would not be there to play 100% of the time, as Blalock could fill in some.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

.208/.269/.333 against lefties in AA

That’s a MLE of .163/.212/.224.

Even if you don’t put much stock in MLE, I don’t see how you can think a guy with a .602 OPS against AA lefties is ready to hit against them in the majors. Blalock already needs a platoon partner against lefties himself, he’s not going to platoon with Smoak against them.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He would be... but it wouldn't be best for Smoak's long-term development.

I dislike Davis more than anyone, but jeopardizing Smoak’s long-term development isn’t the answer.

by Redcaps on Jul 4, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hamilton for Borbon
Huffman for Davis (temporary replacement). Takes Jones’ spot on the 40
Ramirez or Boggs for Jones. Both already on the 40
Morosco for Guardado. Also on the 40 and hot right now, use that streak in the majors.

A.J. would be a fine choice

That would give the Rangers their 2nd lefty in the bullpen.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ramirez isn't hitting

And I don’t think you want to have him come up and just sit on the bench, which is what he’d do.

Boggs would be fine, but he may be hurt.

As for Moscoso, the bullpen already isn’t getting much use. Another RHP middle/long man is going to just sit out there and rot.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2009 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay on 2

Boggs or Ramirez does not matter to me, but if Ramirez isn’t hititng bring up Boggs and have him sit on the bench like he did last time.
I disagree that another pitcher is just going to sit out there and rot. If that was so, the Rangers should just carry one less pitcher and add a position player.

by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

As it is...

…the bullpen hasn’t been getting a ton of use.

I’d add a second lefty for situational purposes, but if you aren’t going to do that, then call up Arias and let him be a pinch runner, I think.

How do you know he can't play 1B?

He has an OBP .100 points higher than Davis, fwiw. He has an over 1 game higher WAR than Davis.

Maybe he can’t hit… but that says a whole lot about how bad Kris Davis is.

We've been over this...

The guy has played first base like three times in his life. He is not a first baseman, and he is not playing well enough to warrant trying force him to learn on the fly.

Jesus, you're one thickheaded mofo.

HE CANNOT PLAY FIRST BASE. For some reason, you refuse to believe that simple, fundamental fact.

This is not a playstation, you cannot stick outfielders at first and expect them to play acceptable major league defense. There is a learning curve when you move to any foreign position, and moving from the outfield to the infield is about as foreign as it gets.

And considering he’s hit like shit since the first three games of his season ended, there’s no reason to try and go down such a learning curve with him.

You have no idea if he can or can't.

I know you hate that because your Longview boy needs all the defending and excuse making he can get, but no one knows how well Jones could play the position given a real chance to work on it.

One thing we do know for a fact though is that Kris Davis is one of the very few players in MLB currently playing below the replacement level, making him one of the worst players in baseball currently.

But, hey, he’s a good old country boy that hit some dingers last year so he’s awesome and stuff.

They just aren’t going to be at 1B for long and the Rangers management wants to give Davis as much a chance as possible since sending him down would probably ruin his fragile psyche for good.

Not really.

My point is that we don’t know how differently they could play first than Davis because they have never been given the chance.

And with a tiny sample size Blalock was even better at 1st than Davis has been.

People really overrate Davis’ defensive abilities. He most likely would prove to be better on defense than Blalock and Jones were they given the chance… but it likely wouldn’t make up for how much he sucks at the plate.

He has a negative WAR. They don’t. I don’t think their playing first would drive them below where he is in that category.

But I don’t think the decision to keep playing Davis is entirely based on the question of net offense/defense.

I think he gets a big premium for being a prospect and more likely to be there for longer. But I think he’s burning through that pretty quickly.

I don't know.

But clearly AL pitchers have figured out how to get him out with much greater consistency than they did when he was new to MLB.

Anyway, good luck with this. If he rallies to bat .250 I’ll admit I was wrong. You’ve been trying the “he’s rallying” (or soon will be) line for 6-8 weeks now and my theory that he just sucks continues to hold true.

Besides, you want to talk about a pitcher being lucky, that was Palmer, and his luck was running out.
