Does this mean Hunter sticks around for awhile?
I am sure this was not in the original plans. I posted this over there, but, you know, game over woohoo Rangers win!
Who could displace him?
I didn’t read up on harrison’s exact prospects but it didn’t appear he or bmac would be back soon.
the preceding post was a great success.
I know bmac is gone for a good term, like always, and maybe even forever as a starter this time
But I thought Harrison was scheduled to be back after just the 15 days. If Hunter is pitching as he is now after 1 more start, no way would I replace him in the rotation with Harrison.

just curious Adam ...
why do you pull for Tommy so much?
I ask because I have the same feeling towards him and I’m not sure why.
I pull for any pitcher
on this team, it’s completely rational given the last decade.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Yeah,
this team is still at the point it could use those solid mid/back of the rotation guys who can give innings and be solid.
We need to start weeding out the guys like BMac that you just can’t count on. Its the guys like BMac that force this team to mess around with the Bensons of the world.

Yep
Maybe it is because that is one of the things I have in common with him.
It amuses me that Seth also has a tendency to turn bright red in the slightest bit of heat.

I just hope Holland sees a guy having success because he keeps hitters off balance by throwing a variety of pitches
Do you really think that would help?
Holland just seeing a guy, another rookie, will improve him in which way?
by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Shouldn't that be something a pitcher learns in the minors?
And if so, does this mean Holland is here too early and needs the rest of the year to work it out at AA?
by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions
well I'm in the He needs to be in the bullpen camp
and learn it there … although it’s really easy to rely completely on one pitch and be successful there
I hadn't thought of it that way
But you are right. If Holland goes to the bullpen, he can rely completely on the heat and be successful, thus never developing into a major league starter. But if he goes back to AAA and starts, he can work on developing all his pitches. No need for that work to be done in the majors.

Holland needs some secondary pitches to throw, first
Right now he really doesn’t have any.
Hunter at least has that curve.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
He doesn't seem to have the ability or confidence to throw them consistently though.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
i think it's a lack of confidence in them
which is why I said I hope he sees Hunter having success with him using a variety
Meh
I don’t really think watching another guy have success is going to suddenly give you confidence in pitches you haven’t been able to use successfully so far. The only way to do that is to get to a point where you can use them successfully. Hopefully Holland is on his way to that as long as he keeps starting, whether it’s here or OKC.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
you're right
but he’s not going to be successful without those secondary pitches and the confidence to use them
I never saw him pitch in the minors but I find myself wondering why Holland was rated so high if he doesn’t ever use his secondary pitches.
So did he use them in the monors more or was he throwing 80-95% heat in the minors as well?
He used the secondary stuff
Made a lot of hitters look silly with the changeup after they saw his mid-upper 90s fastball.
He mixed in a slider too.

You aren’t going to go to a bullpen with C.J. being the only lefty. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 3, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Why not?
For many years, when they only had 5 in the bullpen, multiple teams had only one lefty every year. Ryan is all about getting back to how things were – not judging every pitcher by the 100 pitch count, so why not change this too? It’s not like Eddie has been helpful, overall, to the Rangers in 2009.

But, right now, and almost all of 2009 and the second half of 2008, an additional righty in the bullpen is better than Eddie.

Salty’s line against righthanders this year is .245 .303 .367 .670. And putting Salty at 1st base means that Teagarden catches and that’s just adding another weak bat to the lineup. Last, but not least, Salty doesn’t look too hot at 1st base.

That changeup he threw to strikeout Pena in the 4th was sexy – and I love sexy changeups
he was using alot of good pitches
that cutter looked really good at times, he threw a couple slow curves (74ish) for strikes and that 80ish MPH slider was pretty nasty and got several swinging strikes… But that Changeup was great, i really like Hunter’s stuff tonight, it looked very playable at this level and he seems to already have a good idea of how to pitch

Pedroia: .343

Kinsler: 9.4

Here is a scatter plot of Rangers seasons...
…by the latest point (by games played) at which the Rangers were in first place. (2009 in red.)

Here are the seasons in chronological order:

Just amazing how infrequently the Rangers have been in 1st even as late as only half way through the season.
Fire Washington.
a question, if you please..
Why is everyone so quick to anoint Smoak as the savior at 1st? He still is not hitting lefties worth a crap, yet Moreland is hitting well against both. I know Smoak was a higher draft pick, but shouldn’t production be more important?
(and yes, I know about SSS)

They know Blalock kinda sucks too, and Smoak has been getting repeat coats of hype since he was first drafted.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
Because Davis needs to be replaced, sooner not later
Not because he is a horrible player who will never make it, but because he needs to fix his strike out problem and that is not going to happen in the majors. And because the Rangers need to play their best possible 9 each day and Davis is not one of them.
by Mark from OC on Jul 3, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
But Smoak isn’t the answer yet either. He has yet to hit from the right side in the minors, and he still hasn’t whiffed AAA pitching, either.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
Smoak could easily be a player who skips AAA
As for hitting from the right side, I think he would be a better option than Davis right now. And the pressure would not be there to play 100% of the time, as Blalock could fill in some.

.208/.269/.333 against lefties in AA
That’s a MLE of .163/.212/.224.
Even if you don’t put much stock in MLE, I don’t see how you can think a guy with a .602 OPS against AA lefties is ready to hit against them in the majors. Blalock already needs a platoon partner against lefties himself, he’s not going to platoon with Smoak against them.
Get on base or die, Salty.

I dislike Davis more than anyone, but jeopardizing Smoak’s long-term development isn’t the answer.

Certainly nothing so much worse than Davis that it overcomes the difference at the plate.

No way was I implying nor have I implied elsewhere that the Rangers fire Rudy. Keep him through the season no matter how bad the offense gets. As for Moscoso, the bullpen already isn’t getting much use. Another RHP middle/long man is going to just sit out there and rot.

Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
Jesus, you're one thickheaded mofo.
HE CANNOT PLAY FIRST BASE. For some reason, you refuse to believe that simple, fundamental fact.
This is not a playstation, you cannot stick outfielders at first and expect them to play acceptable major league defense. There is a learning curve when you move to any foreign position, and moving from the outfield to the infield is about as foreign as it gets.
And considering he’s hit like shit since the first three games of his season ended, there’s no reason to try and go down such a learning curve with him.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
You have no idea if he can or can't.
I know you hate that because your Longview boy needs all the defending and excuse making he can get, but no one knows how well Jones could play the position given a real chance to work on it.
One thing we do know for a fact though is that Kris Davis is one of the very few players in MLB currently playing below the replacement level, making him one of the worst players in baseball currently.
But, hey, he’s a good old country boy that hit some dingers last year so he’s awesome and stuff.
You know...
it’s like having roaches in the kitchen. You let Josey come in and make himself at home, and next thing you know he’s laid eggs all over the place and their hatching like gangbusters.

"I don’t think we ever envisioned that anyone could shut this offense down to one hit" - Ron Washington
Not really.
My point is that we don’t know how differently they could play first than Davis because they have never been given the chance.
And with a tiny sample size Blalock was even better at 1st than Davis has been.
People really overrate Davis’ defensive abilities. He most likely would prove to be better on defense than Blalock and Jones were they given the chance… but it likely wouldn’t make up for how much he sucks at the plate.
He has a negative WAR. They don’t. I don’t think their playing first would drive them below where he is in that category.
Tiny 8 games samples sizes don't mean shit, especially with defensive stats

but no matter what, his .450 on base % is way above anyone could have expected… the Kid has exceeded my expectations so far.

At what point does a switch hitter just go to his natural side
when their splits are terrible?
I don’t remember any examples of someone doing it at the major league level
I know it has been done at the major league level in the last 10 years
But I can not remember who it was. More than likely, it was more than 1.

Smoak is ready right now from the Left side
i want him to stay down, but he’d be a better player than CD right now, significantly. To compare him to Moreland is not smart, Smoak is a far superior offensive player and his OBP is just ridiculously good
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Dude, please...
I did nto intend it as a direct comparison, but rather as an exercise in tapping the brakes.
And FWIW, his obp is ridiculously good against RH, and he needs to stay where he is until he hits LH better.

Because there are these things called "scouts".
And also, since when does an .857 OPS with a 6.4bb% mean he’s out producing a guy with a .942 OPS with a 17.4bb% ?
I’m so confused right now.

these things you call "scouts'
Are not infallible. I think Smoak will be a fine player; I just don’t want to rush him like some people who were wanting to call him up the day he got off the dl. We do not need another guy who can’t hit lefties, like 2 or 3 we have now. Let him get that going before we start calling for him to save us.

"Introducing your 2009 Texas Rangers-Built for Insanity!"
Moreland
has a lot more work to do than Smoak, get real. Moreland has stopped walking since moving up to AA, that’s a bigger problem than Smoak not hitting lefties very well right now. I expect both of them to overcome those issues, but Smoak will and should be in Arlington before Moreland.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
no one gets my point-don't rush Smoak!
I agree he is a better prospect, just want everyone to realize he isn’t ready yet-neither is Moreland-let them work it out on the farm, not try to work it out in the bigs(like Davis).
Definiton of insanity-doing the same thing and expecting different results
"Introducing your 2009 Texas Rangers-Built for Insanity!"
But Moreland isn't striking out at a high rate either.
Taking walks aren’t exactly necessary to have a good offense. LAA doesn’t take many walks nor do they hit for a lot of power, yet seem to be able to score rather well.

OT: Raffy Still Denying Steroid Use...
A little off topic, but it’s really the first time he’s spoken about it since he retired. Says he never took anything and his test might have been tainted, or he could have been set up. Video of his interview is on the espn.com frontpage.

I always kinda thought that if he did use, it was only for the last couple years to try to hang on to get to 500 and 3,000. But, even after the positive test, I never thought that he was one of the guys that had been a long time ’roider.
I want to believe he's innocent.
I really do. But it’s hard to trust anyone from that era, especially one who let a teammate inject something into him.
