Latest on Halladay
Maybe we have a chance. per TR Sullivan Rangers still working seriously on Halladay
The Rangers still haven't given up hope of acquiring Roy Halladay. Word is the Rangers still have significant on-going communications going on between them and the Blue Jays with under 24 hours to go before the Trade Deadline.
There are also indications that the Rangers are not going to let money get in the way if they can land Halladay for a reasonable package.
The Blue Jays are not going to give him away. Some of the names that have been thrown around include first baseman Justin Smoak, shortstop Elvis Andrus, outfielder Julio Borbon and pitchers Neftali Feliz and Derek Holland.
The Rangers have to weigh that against having for Halladay for just 11/2 years. But apparently this going to come down to a baseball decision. The Rangers apparently are not going to let money get in the way of getting this guy.

Agreed
Elvis is here to stay. If we do get him I hope it only cost us of one our top level players : Perez, Smoak, Holland and Feliz. with a bunch of mid-level prospect such as Beavan and Kiker.

Is it down to us or the Dodgers?
5:57pm: Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports that the Dodgers and Blue Jays spent the afternoon “negotiating extensively” over Roy Halladay. Apparently talks aren’t “dead” after all. The Dodgers would allow the Jays to get a “haul of prospects” but are trying to acquire Halladay without giving up Clayton Kershaw or Chad Billingsley.

Well we have two equally enthusiastic threads about Halladay.
I’d really like to throw my support behind this one, but you didn’t even spell his name correctly in the title
WOW
The Jays sent a scout to watch Rangers left-hander Derek Holland pitch at home against the Mariners Thursday night on short notice. And one executive who has spoken with the Rangers believes Texas still has a realistic chance of landing Halladay.
The Rangers face significant obstacles in trying to obtain Halladay, who has not ruled waiving his no-trade clause to pitch in Texas. The team is reluctant to trade prospects. And owner Tom Hicks faces financial difficulties, leading many in baseball to question whether his team could absorb Halladay’s remaining salary for 2009 — approximately $4.75 million.
as long as Andrus is not a part of this
i’ll probably be ok with a deal involving two of our top 4 guys
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
boooo
Feliz and 2nd teir players only. And not Borbon.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
then just say
you dont want halladay
rangers fan are getting to be just as bad as mavs fans in their unrealistic valuation of assets
Unrealistic....
Cliff Lee was had for an A ball pitcher (that is not better than our top 4) and a bunch of B prospects
it is not too much to ask for only 1 bluechip prospect to be in the trade….

Im not gonna deal Borbon in any deal honestly
i think we can avoid having to trade him and of all the players we have, outside of Smoak, I think he has the highest likelihood of having some positive impact on this thing going forward.
Honestly, after seeing how much defense has helped this thing along so far, Id not deal Borbon and Andrus, period, they are too important in keeping that trend up for us.
Plus, I think a Feliz+Catcher+Multiple Pitching prospects+ something else gets it done, we may have to do a Feliz+Davis or Smoak package, that would be tough to swallow, but i could live with it/

So, you are seriously asserting you value Borbon more highly than Feliz and Holland?

Borbon
most overrated minor league prospect.

He'll probably be
very Jacoby Ellsbury like and a decent contributor, but Feliz? Smoak? Holland? I’ve seen people say he is a much more important prospect than those 3.

Borbon
I like him, and think he’s a valuable piece to next years team.
But you ask me to choose between him, feliz , smoak and holland im letting borbon go every freaking time.

bleh
id rather keep martin perez, smoak, and one of the feliz/holland duo over elvis
ya, to me, Andrus and Perez are the two guys i dont trade
Borbon too, just b/c i dont think he’d ever be a deal breaker and could be substituted for.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
i can't wait for the stories
of how this was Nolan’s doing and that JD did not want to do this, blah blah blah…power struggle, etc. etc….
usa
well, i bet there will be a certain push by Hicks/Nolan to do this if it does get done
cuz in a vacuum, i dont think JD ever does this deal. But the fan interest, and team morale come into play i bet.

and when halladay leaves after next season
all the blame falls on JD

What difference does it make?
It’s a team sport.
Let’s just win…and Halladay will help in that regard.
Anyone recall when Smoak signed last year?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Smoak
Pretty sure it was near the signing deadline, and i didnt think a player could be traded till 1 yr after he signed

Couldn't they make it a PTBNL?
"Losers assemble in little groups and bitch about the coaches and the system and other players in other little groups. Winners assemble as a team."
- Bill Parcells
Like the rest of you...
I hope if they do get Halladay they can sign him long term. If they can do that I honestly wouldn’t care what two or three top-tier prospects they have to give up. But if they don’t it’s sure gonna suck once he’s gone and we watch one or two of the players they gave up become All Stars for the Torontos.
This would be a very difficult decision and I can’t really say which way I’d go on it, honestly. I mean having Roy Halladay here for the stretch plus next year is real big, but if these prospects turn out the way people seem to think they are that sure is a hell of a lot to give up. It’s going to take some serious balls to make this decision.
Well
If we win a championship on Doc’s back next year and then he walks, I’ll still consider that a win.

And if this team is supposed to be so great in 2010 and 2011 and 2012, why wouldn't he want to ride it out?
Well...
Part of the reason they’re supposed to be so great is because of the players that we’d have to give up to get Halladay.
And he may very well like it here and want to ride it out, but its tough to turn down a chance to hit the open market with Halladays resume.

I've been leaning towards no this whole time
But if its Feliz, Catcher, and some B-B+ arms I say do it.
I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.
Holland peaking at the right time.
I’m one who believes Feliz will be a dominant closer, but Holland will be a good 3 at best. Borbon I think will be Marlon Byrd (not comparing skill sets, just potential/hype vs. reality). Smoak I think will be Will Clark. So hopefully we’ll get Halladay for Holland and Borbon and 2 other guys.
by Apes and Androids on Jul 30, 2009 9:02 PM CDT reply actions
I think that it is useless
to compare rangers prospects with only former Rangers.
Will Clark was really good by the way.
Borbon is about as untouchable as any Ranger to me right now. To give up him and Holland is too much for me.
3 at best? really?
There are probably 500 scouts and front office guys that would disagree

Hold on......
Douchebag Ricciardi told us all that the deadline for any Halladay deal was July 28th. Remember?
What? You mean a GM was full of shit around trade deadline time? Get out. Shame on any media outlet that actually reported that garbage.
when was the Teix trade announced?
the day of the deadline?? or the day before?

How much is Halladay and his contract worth?
Here is what BTB thinks…
Here’s a quick and dirty estimate of what prospect packages would equal Halladay’s trade value. Based on past trading history, some are more likely than others.
•One stud position player. (Win for Blue Jays.)
•One top 50 position player.
•Two top 100 position players.
•One top 10 pitching prospect and a grade B prospect.
•Two top 75 pitching prospects.
•Four grade B prospects.
•Twelve to twenty grade C prospects. (The Ricky Williams strategy?)
I am confident that JD has done his homework and knows what Halladay is worth. According to BtB, Smoak by himself is enough for Halladay.

Even if that isn't KLaw
would anyone be surprised if Halladay exercised his rights to avoid the trade?

Not Keith Law’s Twitter account (he has another one). Don’t believe someone who just joined and has only 4 posts
Btw, you would think a writer would get the players names right (who the hell is Huner?)

Halladay's no trade clause stoped trade in tracks
texasrangers.com has an article on main page indicating that the no trade clause with Halladay is what kept the trade from happening. I’m not sure who the Rangers would have given up, but I’m not sure if i would have wanted Halladay anyway, he probably would have gotten injured if he was a Ranger. The next time Halladay and whatever team he’s on at the time come to play Texas is Arlington, all Ranger fans should give Halladay nothing less then the worst booing imaginable. He’s apparently afraid of the Texas Heat, I say the Texas fans should give him plenty of it too.
