I'm deadset against it at this point.
Price is too steep, and we’re not close enough this year.

the angels coming back to earth
would make us feel a lot closer. of course, feldman and hunter coming back to earth would do the opposite.
in the end, i agree with you, because i also think getting halliday would mean we don’t sign our top two draft picks, which has to count in the cost.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Yep
but we better start liking it b/c i think it is gonna happen…fuck me
we’re gonna sell the team to get halladay
why, i mean, why…none of these other teams are stupid enough to do it, why are we this fucking stupid instead
fuck you if you make this trade jd
Oh, somebody's gonna sell their team for him.
I’ve got a feeling it’s either gonna be us or the Dodgers.

the thread closed before I was able to respond to your
comment on my trade proposal for Halladay. Look at it from this perspective.
- Holland: He’s a beast. No doubt about it. But any trade involving an ace like Doc will require a team giving up a prospect of Dutchs’ ilk…and when it comes down to it, I’d rather lose him than Feliz, Perez or Smoak.
- Davis: Blocked by Smoak.
- Teagarden: Blocked by Salty.
- Kiker: Good prospect but we have plenty of prospects of his caliber.
- Boscan: Same boat as Kiker.
That’s my logic. At some point a 1st baseman and a catcher will be traded. Why not trade them for one of the best pitchers in baseball? Kiker and Boscan are good but not irreplaceable. Holland hurts but chances are, he’ll never sniff Doc’s level of beastiness.

I would think long and hard about that
But I still think it is too much at the end of the day
but at least you arent dumb enough to include 2 of the big 4…
i think your proposal is perfectly reasonable and it is just a matter of us disagreeing with the direction of the franchise and on the proper approach to the team…..and there is nothing wrong with that
Im gonna have a hard time being upset if we trade for Halliday
unless Andrus or maybe Perez goes the other way.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
felix, smoak and a catcher
seems more than fair to all involved parties. we still keep the two best pitchers in our system and we still have davis.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Davis blows.
Well, he doesn’t blow, but he’s exactly the kind fo hitter we don’t need any more of.

Dude
That’s some serious shifting with the wind. You really think he’s going to suck forever?
by brettgardner on Jul 30, 2009 7:58 PM CDT up reply actions
No.
But we’ve got enough high power/low OBP hackers on this club.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Even though
He had a .376 OBP throughout his admittedly brief time in the minors, you think he’s going to continue putting up sub 300 lines?
by brettgardner on Jul 30, 2009 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions
He's also a career .302 hitter in the minors.
I don’t see him duplicating that in the majors as much as he whiffs. My guess is he’ll be another Blalock type, and that doesn’t really enthuse me anymore.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Could live with that
If Elvis is included, I have dibs on strangling JD.
As long as we keep either Dutch or Feliz, I’ll be okay…I think…
I agree
But I’m guessing with that package you’d also have to include a second tier arm.
by brettgardner on Jul 30, 2009 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions
why?
how many packages can you think of, in the history of baseball, included TWO top 20 prospects?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Feliz
It’s like he’s been mishandled to the point where people forget how special his arm is.
It’s going to suck a fucking bag of dicks if we give up Feliz or Holland.
This.
"After intense analysis, I have come to the conclusion that Neftali Feliz throws fucking hard." - John Sickels
Ill be shocked
if we made the deal w/o one of the 2
that said, id still rather trade either of them before Smoak
Well, yeah.
That’s just one of many reasons why the deal is a fucking terrible idea.
Someone p'shop Halladay in Texas Rangers gear...

"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Ill ask again...
everyone here says that boston and teams like the phils are great organizations. They refuse to trade their young studs from the farm, yet you want us to do so….how is that a logical approach if you think those teams are a great line to follow?
im genuinely curious to see how this can be answered
Beckett was younger than Doc though...
Yes, there are times when you’ve got to go all-in.
I’m on the fence if we’re ready for that this year…next year, Dutch and Feliz are definitely both in the rotation. This is probably the only time to realistically trade them…so…maybe…
I think that JD knows what he's doing.
He made some bad trades a several years ago, but he’s helped build up our farm system to where it is. If he’s willing to part with what he’s built up, I trust him.
To be fair...
this is the kind of move that he has never had success with though
as a matter of fact, he has failed everytime with this kind of move
because im a little kid in a candy store and I want the biggest, most expensive, cool looking piece of candy
seriously, I cant help but be excited about the idea. We havent made the playoffs in ten years and im losing my logical focus.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Again though
isnt this young team and great farm system what weve all been waiting for
people around here tried to compare it to the braves dynasty in the 90s…why panic now and bail out on the plan
It just baffles me how those teams refuse to trade any of their top prospects but we are supposedly gonna deal 4 guys in the top 10…including 2 in the top 20 in baseball

He was annoyed with it having to be brand new too
But also, Chrysler is offering to double the cash for clunkers rebate, and since he doesn’t want extras like a/c, power windows, etc. he could get a Dodge Caliber or Jeep Compass for like $9000 brand new. He’d be trading in a 1995 Toyota 4Runner with a quarter-million miles on it that leaks every fluid it has.
in may
my company was offering to pay the dealer $2000 of the cost of our car if we bought a new car in market. that would have been nice with a rebate (not that i qualify for rebate)

Ok...
we’ll agree to disagree
that playoff rotation is very average to me…especially when you consider our offense against good pitching
With this offense
and who do we have behind Halladay? Millwood and then who? Sure Feldman and Hunter have been good this year, but next year what if they come back to earth? Then we blew up the farm for a year and half rental of a guy, and end up like the Braves. Then everyone will talk about how bad the Jays fleeced the Rangers in the deal of the century.

Sunny came into the booth and you hear Grieve go “that’s disgusting. How long have you had that?”. Sounds like Sunny has some kinda growth on his foot. They asked him if he was able to put a shoe on. It was hilarious!

8:10: What I’m hearing at this hour is that talks between the Rangers and Blue Jays remain very serious and if you want to read tea leaves, well, you just might go blind. Consider:
Holland is starting (that’s a sign a deal won’t happen): If the teams were that close to a deal, within 24 hours of the deasline, why would Holland start tonight and potentially leave himself open to injury or to allow Toronto to back out over one poor start?
Holland is starting (that’s a sign that a deal hinges upon his performance): Toronto scout Roy Smith is in the park tonight, presumably to watch Holland. If he pitches well (and did we mention he retired the first 12 batters he faced?), would the Rangers back out of a trade? If he pitches poorly, would Toronto?

8:19: Let me be clear on this front – just in case I haven’t already – Holland appears to be the key piece in the deal. I think the Rangers have steeled themselves to be willing to part with Justin Smoak. I think they will get to keep two of Holland, Neftali Feliz anda Martin Perez, but it appears that they would have to include Holland to satisfy Toronto’s desire. Pretty clear expression that Holland and Perez are ahead of Feliz now in the prospect pecking order.
