I wonder if that stuff just got Holland scratched off the available list...

Evan Grant
9:26: Maybe this is an emotional decision, but based on the reaction of the fans and his teammates and just his flat-out performance, I think there is no way the Rangers can put Holland in a deal for Halladay now. If it costs them Halladay, it costs them Halladay. And if it forces Toronto to hold on to him rather than trade him to Boston or Philadelphia, all the better. This has been an incredible night and one I predict will be revisited a number of times at the end of this season after all the results are in.
I agree. If we do trade for Halladay no way Holland is in it.

how can you trade 2 prospects in the top20/10?…how
and then you also trade a couple guys in the top 100

I just think we could easily still have a bright future without those two guys.
Obviously it’d be brighter with them (probably) you never know what prospects will become.

Or so the thinking goes…
If I remember correctly, Ron Washington was the manager last year, too
Maybe he’s teaching something this year, that he didn’t do last year.
Or it could be the fact that we have a fucking good defensive shortstop this time, to go along with our pitch-to-contact pitching.

5th inning against the Tigers
there is also a rational reason not to trade him now
and that is the fact that you have the chance at plugging him into the rotation every 5th day the rest of the year and him being so good that halladay realyl wouldn’t be enough of an improvement.
still say a feliz trade will probably be offered to toronto (hopefully minus smoak) but given that holland has shown himself to be pretty close, it just doesn’t make sense to trade for halladay (given what else you would be giving up). Actually, that is a bit of an overstatement since its one game against Seattle but you would at least start to think along those lines

Well... I'm right about my source being who I've said it is.
And I was right about a sale of the team not being a thing that was coming any time soon (back when the Nolan Ryan and David McDavid and other rumors were flying)…
And I was right about the Rangers not trading for Halladay…
Not ground-breaking stuff, I realize… but stuff I didn’t waste my time thinking was pending as others here have…
you were right about:
-something only you can verify (I am also right that I am wearing a blue shirt)
-something that everybody already knew (I was right that Lincecum will not be traded)
-something that actually you don’t even know is right
awesome. this is where I hope you’re like 15 so you have an excuse (and I get embarrassed about arguing with a 15 year old).

Funny that the DMN was running articles for several days
that had everyone here talking about an impending sale…
But yeah, I’m sure you could find some links that came down weeks later…
i'm pretty sure there were some mentions of david mcdavid
without any serious talks and people (front office types) immediately saying that a deal wouldn’t happen until at least the offseason.
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

Nice post game interview with Holland on KRLD
Asked if he was thinking about the shutout going into the 9th. Said no, just taking it one pitch at a time. Trite but whatever Nook
He sounded pretty damn poised.

I guess have been on the pro-Halladay bandwagon, but I really want to keep Smoak. I would prefer to keep the pitchers who are most MLB-ready. The thing that I don’t get is, why doesn’t Font get included? I understand that people want to keep Perez, but I feel like Font would be a good/fair addition.

Seems alot of our deals are the same
I go this far for him:
Feliz, Davis, Teagarden, Font
Holland and Smoak are off limits
I am willing to change Perez for Feliz
I am also willing to exchange any combination of players at the bottom of the deal (Bevean, Kiker)
I would prefer to keep Borbon….but if they had to have him i could live with it.

Update from Bob Nightengale (who?)
Nolan Ryan just said they actively are seeking Toronto Roy Halladay, but suggested that LHP Derek Holland won’t be part of any deal.
“It’s still premature to make a prediction whether it will happen,‘’ Ryan said of a deal for Holladay. "Obviously., we’d like to have him.
Hope to God this doesn’t mean they’ll compensate with Feliz+Smoak+more.
Btw...
Not sure if you saw my Q earlier… or maybe I just missed your response…
…but what makes you so sure Jones won’t be around next year? (Not saying that you’re wrong, fwiw…)
Nothing really.
I don’t think I ever said that so strongly, I just operate under the presumption free agents will leave.
But I think AJ will probably be able to get someone to tell him they will start him next year… I’m not sure the Rangers will do that, they might plan to give Davis/Smoak the first shot and deal with it from there.
If we have smoak in 24 hours anyway.
the preceding post was a great success.
OK.
Fair enough.
And that would be my guess as well… although I’d love to have him back as our #1 right-handed DH next year.
I’d trade Davis though. Surely there’s some sucker out there that would take him.

I've never seen the necessity

My MY theory
Last year he didn’t get his 200 hits, breaking his streak. Now that he’s not as concerned about getting 200 hits, he’s swinging with a bit harder, giving up average (potentally, but not really in this case) for power.

Could be
But if you give credence to what he said near the end of spring training, the break on each hand really hampered him, and he does go after the max number of hits he can get. The difference is that he finally did what some had been begging for for three years – got off the back end of the batter’s box, and moved a couple inches closer to the plate. Since he was beaned and had to have surgery (ear and temple) in ‘06 spring training, he’s been back and deep, and vulnerable to two areas of the strike zone where he used to hit pretty well – down and away and up and away. This year, not so much. He’s always had fence or better power, but sees his job as getting hits.
IIRC.

If I had to pick 2
I’d probably go with Smoak and then it gets tough for me between Holland and Perez. I’d probably go with Holland.

My guess is Smoak and Feliz, but I think Holland has a good chance.
I pick Feliz over Holland because I can’t think of any prospects that could throw 100+ and ended up being busts. I’m sure some of the prospect-nerds here can name a bunch. I’d love to see 3 of 4 make it.

Capellan comes to mind
And Zumaya isn’t setting the world on fire. When he throws a pitch It’s as likely to wind up behind the ump as it is in the catcher’s mitt. Not to mention his injury problems.

I think there is a good chance
that its 3 of 4. Its still a fun game to play.
As far as guys who have thrown over 100 and were never much, here’s a partial list.
Kyle Farnsworth
Joe Table
Guillermo Mota
Dustin McGowan
Jorge Julio
I’m sure there are others. Jose Mesa had some decent years, but I still think of him as a choker, so I acknowledge personal predudices with him.

Almost threw him in

Never heard of Table
The others all had “careers” in the majors. I think that has to be considered “not bust”. Certainly not stars, but not busts either.

Wow, Nightengale fucking blows
Here’s a more complete write-up of Nolan’s comments.
The “him,” of course, is Roy Halladay. Rangers president Nolan Ryan talked about it just after the Rangers’ 7-1 win over Toronto on Thursday.
“Obviously, we’d like to have him, but there are players who are a big part of our future that we’d like to retain,” Ryan said. “We have players we don’t want to part with. You have to give up somebody you don’t want to part with to get a guy like Halladay.”
Ryan said it would depend on the combination of players that were on the table and the club’s areas of depth.
“We’ve had discussions with them,” said Ryan, referring to the Toronto Blue Jays, adding that lots of names have been talked about. “It’s still premature to make a prediction as to whether it’s going to happen.”
Ryan added that he spoke with Rangers GM Jon Daniels a few times during the game and that Daniels is working the phones.
Ryan was also impressed with Derek Holland’s performance and wouldn’t say whether Holland’s performance impacted what the club might do.
That makes it sound a lot less likely that a deal is going to happen.
Yes but no one else knows it yet

Me either.
Maybe we can just get Nick Johnson now.

I don't understand why this update would chaneg anything 0.o
the preceding post was a great success.
sounds like we are no longer dealing from the position of power
its not a “here’s our offer. take it or leave it.”
they obviously know that toronto paying his salary is going to cost us and they apparently are willing to do that. completely stupid.
i still think a feliz/davis/tea/font would have gotten it done but looks like we aren’t going down that route
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Sounds the other way around to me.
If they really want the players they want… they can throw in some extra cash for them.
I’m just glad Holland’s off the table, as I think trading for Halladay would be really stupid.
The only thing I can think of.
Is that if the Jays are going to pick up some money, the cost of the package goes up.
Either way, I sincerely hope this (or anything else really) causes the deal to break down.
I love it
run them over the coals for Halladay. Make them take a lower package than we’d like, AND pay.

If we can't pay him
we shouldn’t be going after him. Throwing in more prospects just so they’ll fork over some cash is stupid.
I agree 100%.
unless the other prospects are third or fourth tier prospects, I don’t want to see more prospects in the deal.

Seems unlikely, doesn't it.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Maybe we're not going after him...
…as much as the Blue Jays are going after some prospects of ours.
Which they can pay up for if they’re that interested.
That's not how these things...
work, though. Toronto doesn’t call Texas and say, “We have this really great pitcher named Roy Halladay, you heard of him? Well, we might move him and we’ve had our eye on that kid of yours, Wilmer Font, how say you to a deal?”

Are you challenging the man's sources, goET?
I hear they’re impeccable.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
FWIW: You really need work on your understanding of the concept, "chill out."
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
And you were so recently lauding me on what a good point I'd made.
Twice. Too bad you didn’t actually follow my point.
Ah, well…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Um... not sure what that has to do with anything.
You are the one that started back in about sources.
Btw… just curious… do you think I’m lying about who my source is?
did you say who your source was
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Again, I don't care.
I think the fact that you compared yourself to Evan Grant earlier means I’m going to mock you and your sources for a long, long time.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I didn't ask if you cared.
Can you answer the question?
(And I didn’t “compare myself” to Evan Grant, fwiw.)
Yes, FWIW you did.
However indirect it might have been, your comparing the sources for your posts favorably to the sources for his reporting is a comparison to Evan Grant.
I don’t have any idea if you’re lying about being buddies with the Hicks (or the quantity or quality of Rangers information they feed you), and, once again, I don’t care.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).

I didn't.
Just compared our sources on a specific topic.
There’s a difference, fwiw.
(You sure do respond to me a lot about this for someone who doesn’t care, fwiw…
)
You did, you really did.
Three more concepts for you to add to “chill out,” in terms of studying up:
(1) Comparison
(2) Backtrack
(3) Apathetic

No...
The Rangers say "We’ll give you _.’ They say No… but after looking at some things we want “_______.”
The Rangers reject that.
The Blue Jays are still very interested though so they keep pursuing it with a name or two changed… and the Rangers say “throw in $__,000,000 and we’ll think a little more about it…”
that doesn't even make sense
but there’s no way that ends well for the rangers. if the blue jays are going to pay, they are going to want good prospects. i only make this deal if I don’t deal my good prospects. no amount of money (at least definitely not what the jays would be willing to give) would be worth giving up one of the top 4.
if there is any talk of jays taking on money, this doesn’t end well for the rangers. best we can hope for is no deal – but there’s no point to go down this road at all
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Just thought I'd throw this out there:
There are 5 teams currently with better records than the Rangers. 2 in the NL, 3 in the AL.
If only we could be in the Central division….either league really.
I didn't get to see the game
but are people knee-jerking the other way?
After all, this is the Mariner’s offense we’re talking about.
One of the few teams worse in the AL in offense (slanting toward OBP) than the Rangers (the other being the Royals).
Still, it’s nice that he was able to dominate a major league team.

Your first line there was pretty important.
Rather a better offense could have snuck in a few runs against him or not, he looked much better today. Control, offspeed.. it was there.

yup
it was probably the most impressive showing by a pitcher this year, visually and statistically. So, Mariner’s offense or not, it was a great start.

Going off our prospect list just as a basis…
Lets say Feliz/Smoak/Holland/Perez are tier 1.
Font/Beavan/Borbon/Hunter are tier 2.
Main/Kiker/Ross/Max/etc. are tier 3.
Maybe one from each tier and let them pick a lower guy or 2 they particularly like?

Screw that, imho. Holland/Feliz should be off the table. No need to rush this and make a gamble now. Stay the course, imho.

i agree with what you said
and out of tier 2 beavan would be the only one I’d be wanting to deal. But obviously they wouldn’t do a Perez/Smoak, Beavan, and Kiker plus C level prospect package. The reality is that this is not the time to do thsi deal, plain and simple

I doubt including Hunter gives the Rangers any flexibility with the other two (or three).
Well
I wouldn’t just toss him in with Holland and Smoak, that’s for sure.
Those are the two I least want to give up.

Yeah
and lets just say that this gets done with Holland and Hunter included. That makes ur rotation Halladay, Millwood, Padilla, Feldman, and Nippert I guess. That in no way makes us the favorites to win the division with how awful the offense has been
Even if we could have gotten Lee and Halladay
One has to think that this offense of June and July could carry this team into the playoffs

If hunter is a major piece in a deal I'd view it as a positive honestly
the preceding post was a great success.
Because I think hes a #4 at best, #5 in probability.
And that this could be the highpoint of his value.
If they want to believe in his run this year and take him in place of a higher upside prospect that would make this deal easier for me. Not that I think he sucks, hes
I would not give both he and holland up in a deal though for the effect it would have on the 2009 season, obviously a major part of any halladay trade. We need one of them in the rotation.
the preceding post was a great success.
I agree with the last paragraph
which is what I was implying when I said I wouldn’t give both up, for the reason you described

I know it’s Roy Majesty Halladay, but as earlier said, he might be worth 3 additional wins the rest of this season, and only is super valuable in playoff series – if the Rangers get there! And contrary to some of the opinions, and some of the prospect value rankings, my list of players exempt from any trade for pitching includes Holland – Feliz – Perez – Borbon. Anybody else can be either backfilled or replaced.

No he's replaceable
Teixeira wasn’t, and Justin isn’t.. There isn’t anyone else in the system to bring up who could provide Smoak’s OBP-OPS, but IMO the potential pitching goodness and defensive upgrade should mean more – continued run prevention – than trying to make the 1-9 lineup all hitting studs. Now I admit I’m counting on Kinsler and Hamilton to pick it back up, if not the rest of this season, the 2-4 years following. Right now you’ve got Young and Cruz and occasional outbursts or small streaks. It is bound to get a little better without any one designated bat.

I want to keep our up the middle in tact, the corners can be filled in rather easily. Keep Andrus, Borbon, and Salty, that alone + Kinsler guarantees a pretty strong defense moving forward.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
I think this clubs
lack of OBP is going to be the number one reason for bitching on these boards over the next 4 years or so. We just got so many low OBP guys, and not much on the farm, other than Smoak, its gonna be ugly. Just a bunch of HR or bust offenses.

I'm not as worried
I think this is a problem that can be fixed, just maybe not mid-season. These players are all still pretty young, and they set patterns or showed promise before this year:
Saltalamacchia: .352 OBP in 2008, .291 OBP this year
Andrus: back to back months of .347 and .342 in May/June
Hamilton: .368 and .371 in his first 2 years; .272 this year
Kinsler: .347, .355, .375 before this year; .313 this year
Davis: .331 last year before .256 this year
Add Murphy, Cruz, Young, and if we keep him (most likely) Smoak, and I think this team’s OBP could easily be in the top half of the AL next year.

Im not so sure
Kinsler and Hamilton aren’t on the Hank Blalock development plan.

I can't guarantee that they're not
that would truly suck. But while I’m frustrated like hell with this year’s OBP situation, I think it’s certainly salvageable and I have faith that everything will be done to mitigate the situation in the off-season. JD has called attention to this problem. EVERYBODY knows about this problem.

Smoak's likely part of the solution.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
He seems the biggest part
available on the farm. Maybe a healthy Maxram might be also.

I think Borbon's skill set is more replaceable than Smoak's, for this team.
Along the lines of Cahill’s thoughts below.

Or, rather, above.

Yep
Good defensive CFs who hit 270/330/370 aren’t that tough to come by.

I just don’t see a candidate who is both available and affordable and would be under control for some duration. Maybe I’ve not looked “out there” sufficiently.

I'll admit I haven't done my homework,
but I’d be very surprised if there weren’t similar CF candidates out there (perhaps still in their current clubs’ respective farm systems) who could be had for the right price if the need arose. (A couple names have been bandied about here in recent days ~ can’t recall them offhand, so maybe someone can help me out there.)
I should also say that I’m not as high on Borbon as some…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
A young, controllable
CF with plus defense and plus speed and an average bat isn’t “out there” unless you give up legit talent. Sure he might end up being a 4th OF simply because his bat doesn’t show up, but he could also be a solid starter. I’d rather keep him and smoak. Each are vital for the future IMO
The question isn't whether finding a replacement for Borbon
would cost the Rangers talent; it’s whether he’s worth so much to this club as currently constructed as to be “untouchable” in trade talks. I’d argue he is not.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I wouldn't
classify him as “untouchable” either. That said, I have no interest in packaging Borbon with Holland/Feliz, and Smoak for Halladay. Basically all I’m saying is that there aren’t as many guys like Borbon out there as you seem to hint are
I think Borbon's reasonably replaceable. That's all I'm saying.
As I wrote, I don’t know how many guys like him there are out there, but I don’t think he’s as rare a commodity (especially in terms of the Rangers’ future needs) as, say, Smoak.
And I’m not a fan of putting Holland and Smoak (or Feliz and Smoak) into a deal for Halladay, so adding Borbon to the mix does nothing for me.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I'd argue
that although Smoak is a better prospect than Borbon, Borbon is just as vital to the future since he will slide Hamilton to the corner, thus completing an OF of Cruz, Hamilton, and Borbon. We need a true CF to keep Josh healthy and allow us to rid ourselves of Byrd and put that money to better use (like Sheets).
I completely agree Hamilton needs to move to a corner.
I just can’t believe Borbon’s the only answer to the question of who takes over in center.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I hear you
and agree with that. A move could definately be made if we dealt him to plug CF, i’d just rather not see that happen. Especially if it means resigning Byrd
I honestly think you could get away with
Boggs, Murphy or Golson in CF. But Boggs and Golson haven’t proven they can hit at the major league level yet, and Murphy might be a notch below at CF. He certainly won’t be above average there defensively.
"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"
by Walter Sobchak on Jul 31, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions
This is a big reason why Boggs's development
(or, rather, lack thereof) has had me majorly bummed. I’d really thought he’d be a high-OBP, good-CF-defense guy, even if only as a 4th OF.
Now he seems more likely to be a 5th OF, at best, and it’s not clear he can be all that as a CF…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
yeah we've had some disappointment
Boggs, MaxRam and Main – and to some extent Neil Ramirez – have all had a pretty rough 2009.

by Walter Sobchak on Jul 31, 2009 1:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah. The latter three guys, though,
will be 25, 21, and ~21 heading into next season ~ and of that trio, only Max was expected to be on the cusp of helping the big-league team this season.
Boggs will be 27, and it’s hard not to think his window is closing. I’d hoped he might be one of those guys…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
i think
Murphy would be awful in CF. He’s barely average in LF. If he could handle it, then he’d be out there this year
Yeah, I want no part of Murphy in center.
I want my dreams of Boggs back, though.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I guess my definition of "not above average"
could be translated to your “awful” – I don’t think he’d be a game changer, and I don’t think he’d be the worst CF out there.
"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"
by Walter Sobchak on Jul 31, 2009 1:26 AM CDT up reply actions
the problem with this line of thinking
the “Borbon can be replaced” line of thinking is that by trading him, we’d probably have to sign Byrd to an extension, which will cost more than we’d hope to spend; and/or it means Hamilton stays in CF. I think most on here want to use the money we’d have to spend on Byrd elsewhere, and most on here would like Hamilton out of CF in the future.
In addition, Borbon’s got a pretty high upside, I’d say – he COULD be an above average defender and a high average hitting, solid to high OBP, base stealing threat to set the table at the top of this lineup, which would move Kinsler down to a more natural run-producing spot in the lineup. Not saying he’s a lock to reach that, but I think he’s got a better chance of that kind of success than he does of failing to reach that potential, personally.

If Byrd's the only option to replace Borbon in 2010,
then I’d be more inclined to agree with Ed. I’m going to have to look into this more, though, because I’m not willing to accept that premise (yet).
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Also, you're more optimistic about Borbon than I am,
particularly in terms of his OBP potential. Though I’ll admit to not being completely sure how/why I’ve formed that opinion…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
many of the names that post regularly on here were very anti-Borbon
come draft time, and they’ve carried that over for the first year he was here. Their biggest concern was a lack of patience at the plate. But if you look at his minor league numbers, which may not be transferable to the majors but certainly indicate that he’s been more patient at the plate, you’ll see he’s progressed:
2007: sub-.300 OBP
2008: .346 OBP at A+, .380 OBP at AA
2009: .373 OBP at AAA (his most at bats at any stop, by the way)
"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"
by Walter Sobchak on Jul 31, 2009 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions
He's gotten better, no doubt.
I’m not sold on his potential as a leadoff batter, but I’m trying to keep an open mind.
Still, I wouldn’t consider him untouchable in terms of trade talk. Or, at least, not “as untouchable” as Smoak. (Or Holland, for that matter.)
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I think I'd give up anybody for the right return
if Halladay agreed to an extension before coming over, I’d trade any one of our “Big 4” and some lower levels, but not two in the same package.
But if it’s not a Halladay-type pitcher, or a Pujols-type hitter, I’m not even thinking about including Holland or Andrus on the ML level or Feliz, Smoak, Perez on the minor league level (and soon to be Purke) for anything else. And I’d also like to avoid giving up Borbon, Hunter (vs. the “sell high” routine I’ve seen here), Main, Beavan, Font or Moreland – so I’d have to get pretty nice value in return for any of those names.
Anybody else can be had.

Yeah, I think our thinking's actually not all that far apart on this.
I’m not trying to say the Rangers should be eager to deal Borbon. But I don’t think of his inclusion in a deal the same way I do that of Holland, Perez, Smoak, or Feliz.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Neither do I.
I would have to think long and hard about a Holland or Feliz; Borbon; Beavan; Beltre deal for Halladay, and that’s one I would imagine Ricciardi would scoff at. So really, if I were GM, there’s nothing to worry about. Of course, I’d screw up many other things…
Oh and by the way, if this were a few years ago, and this were Johan Santana we were talking about, I’d have already pulled the deal on ANY offer. I’ve had man-love for that guy for years

I agree with your list, but I add Smoak to it as well.
I like this team’s long term prospects a hell of a lot better if all of those guys get a chance to have a future in Arlington. Roy is a pitching god, but he’s on the wrong side of 30, he has a ton of innings on his arm, he’ll cost us significant pieces of our future in 2010 and beyond, and we’ll only control him for a season and two months. Short term thinking killed this team in the first part of this decade and it should be avoided now that we have good long-term pieces ready to burst onto the scene.

You know...
Michael Young is having, maybe, the best offensive year of his career right now.
.911 OPS (9th in the AL), .326 BA (5th in the AL), 31 doubles (3rd in the AL)
His defensive stats might be disappointing thus far, but his offensive numbers have been incredible.
Just an observation… Now back to the Halladay talk.
by Stephen Rushin on Jul 31, 2009 12:37 AM CDT reply actions
yeah so much for his"regression"
apparently multiple broken fingers happens to decrease production. Who knew
If you ask me...
I think his improvement this year also has to do with his move to third base. When he first moved to short stop, he was absolutely terrible offensively, but he posted some very nice years in terms of power in 2004-2005 (SLG% of .483, .513 in 2004/2005). Soon thereafter, Young was confronted with a lot of statistics indicating his defensive deficiencies, and between 2006-2008 his defensive range improved, but his power seemed to taper off. (SLG% of .459, .418, .402 in 2006-2006).
Now, he is at a position that is less demanding in terms of range and he spoke about adding on some extra bulk in the off season. And now his SLG% has peaking to .532, closer to what it was in 2004/2005.
I think moving him to 3rd base has been a great move, if for no other reason, than because Young can focus on hitting for a little more power; when he does hit for power, he is a much more valuable player. I also am of the belief that he will improve defensively over time at third, but maybe that is unfounded. Either way, even with his defensive problems, he is still a pretty valuable player right now.
