Halladay trade to the Rangers just about dead

T.R. Sullivan says that the trade talks between the Rangers and the Blue Jays involving Roy Halladay are somewhere between on life support and dead.

Sullivan says the Jays were interested in catching, Justin Smoak, Tommy Hunter, and Julio Borbon, but wanted Derek Holland in any deal, while the Rangers weren't interested in parting with Holland.

Well, I was willing to part with Holland in a Holland/Perez/Moreland/Beavan type of deal.

But, I would guess they believed all along that Holland could develop much more rapidly than the average pitching prospect, given the comments from JD that Holland was never really anything but untouchable.

Well, at least the Halos didn’t get Halladay, and I have to wonder what JP thinks he can accomplish this offseason to make them a more competitive team next year. It seems really likely that he’s gonna get less this offseason than the Rangers’ best offer right now.

Hopefully more offseason trade targets for an Ace will emerge.

Last I heard he was labelled "untouchable"

Apparently the Indians fear the PR hit of trading him. Of ourse, that info is a couple of days old and probably trade deadline BS anyway, but that IS what I read.

Part of the problem is that they wouldn't need catching back, so Salty/Tea/Max couldn't be any part of the package going back.

Shoppach is a fine catcher and Carlos Santana is the shit like I am on the dance floor… only maybe even BETTER than that.

I love me some M-Per, but if they were willing to talk about a package built around Marteen and a couple other guys… I’d be intrigued.

V-Mart is a beast.

Total difference maker.

Let’s say V-Mart and Pavano for M-Per + Brandon McCarthy + Boscan + Moreland. That’s semi-comparable to what they just got from Philly for Lee, and frankly I like M-Per a good deal better than Knapp.

I’d hate, hate, hate the thought of giving up Mateen, but, man… I’d think about that shit at least a little. I dunno. I can’t decide if I’d be down with something like that or not. Sometimes I’m glad I’m not a GM.

I don't think I would either.

But, I’d at least think about it.

Especially if I believed he could still handle 80-90 games behind the plate. I’ll be honest, I’ve only caught a couple of his games behind the plate this year and he looked kinda bad back there, but not Mike Piazza terrible or anything.

And, fwiw, if the above price was offered for Halladay I think that should would be done. The BJ’s were asking for two of our big 4, and more valuable ones than Marteen.

Nice

I was never in favor of giving up 2 of the top 4-5 in the first place.

Here’s the weird thing. When we traded Soriano I was happy because I could see the issues with Sori being here (low obp, big contract, not enough power when he was here to bat in the midde; basically not enough to justify top of the order and too expensive for the bottom).

I see all the upside with Halladay and am not positive about the guys JP wanted yet I’m still happy with no trade. Perhaps I’m overvaluing prospects too.

Whatever. Happy is happy.

Here is the problem

There is every possibility that JP Ricciardi is going to push as long as he can for Holland, then step back to Feliz as his backup later in the day. I suppose that someone like Tommy Hunter could still be a sticking point, but think about this logically. A deal led by Feliz and Smoak trumps even deals that Toronto was reported to request from Philadelphia and LAA, deals that those teams didn’t even come close to agreeing to. I’m still sweating. Right

If Hunter is a sticking point, and they want a catcher, they could do Feliz, Smoak, Teagarden and Borbon, which would still be better than anything else talked about.

I wouldn’t do that, but if the Rangers are willing to do Feliz and Smoak, and Toronto will take Feliz instead of Holland, there’s a deal to be made. The other two players won’t hold it up given the depth of talent the Rangers have in their system.

I’ve moved pretty solidly into the don’t make a Halliday deal camp. I would focus on something like Teagarden and a couple second-tier pitchers for a hitting or pitching upgrade.

by Darrell McKown on Jul 31, 2009 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

My problem is theyve had all this talk about a plan and building from within, etc. and its starting to show dividends and now they want to blow that plan out the window because a pitcher under control for 1.3 yrs is on the market?

The time just isn’t right, and they’d be overpaying too heavily. But I’m going to feel completely differently about this sort of thing in a year or two, when it’s Purke, Font, Scheppers, etc. that we’re talking about and the full monster is in place.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 31, 2009 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

When some of these key pieces are in place in the next 1-2 seasons then it makes more sense to me to add that 1 key piece that will put this thing over the top.

Right now I dont think this team is 1 pitcher away from a world series or playoffs

I don’t have a problem with trading stud prospects for that “one missing piece” when we’re clearly that “Full monster”. It’s a year too early for me, which is why I’m hot on dealing for Halladay, but I’m not opposed to adding a stud with only 1.3 years left when this team is a little further along.

Its mere fact. You'd still have Salty

or Tea, depending on whether you threw them in for a trade. I think you have like 4 more years of control for Salty? I also think you may have an option left on Salty, but I’m not sure of that and maybe an option on Teagarden.

You could also try to trade VMart in the offseason, I believe.

However, right now, this year, it is difficult to upgrade the offense significantly anywhere but Catcher. Quite frankly, our DH spot is productive. 1B is probably close to league average with Blalock there. I just don’t see us making up a lot of ground making a trade to patch places we aren’t hurting.

I think there is a structural problem

with this team in the future if you look at OBP-AVG.

League average is about 70, and just about the entire team is below that. The only guys above it are platoon guys like Murphy, or guys who are leaving like AJ. We have a couple guys who are close to average, like Kinsler and Cruz, but everyone else appears to be well below average.

This team needs a high BA to have a competitive OBP, and its going to be that way for the forseeable future.

Posted this in the other thread..

…but what about Adam Dunn? If you moved him from LF to DH, he becomes goes from a 1.3 WAR player to a 2.4 WAR player this season.

You would have to overpay to get the Nationals to pick up some of the salary, but he has a lot more value to us than he does to the Nationals.

Dunn gets on base and that's a good

but I don’t think he mashes LH’s like he does RH pitching.

I have to believe the Angels are going to do something today and knowing how the Rangers struggle v LH pitching, I wonder if they’ll go hard after Davis or Duke.

It seems I remember JD saying....

That any offensive improvement would have to come from within.

Plus Dunn’s money for the rest of the year would be tough for us.

Simply hoping the offense is going to get better is failed.

We’ve seen this for 4 months and it’s not a fluke.

It could just be GM talk....

can’t believe anything you hear from a GM this time of year

I would really like to add Nick Johnson….

He could play first and have Hank/Jones split DH duties.

by death of the cool on Jul 31, 2009 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

You realize that this offense...

…is not failed right? That’s it’s actually average to above average?

You have to look at the whole picture. As a team, they have a terrible OBP, but their SLG leads to them having one of the better OPS and wOBA’s over the course of the year. And while June was truly horrific, they were a legit top 5 offense in April and May. Personally, I think their level is somewhere around what they’ve shown in July, which is around average. A move is not a necessity, but it sure could help…

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 31, 2009 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Hmmm..

Here are some numbers I posted yesterday from fangraphs:

OBP/OPS/wOBA (ranks)
April: .329(23rd)/.826(5th)/.358(5th)
May: .333(15th)/.816(4th)/.352(5th)
June: .288(30th)/.677(27th)/.300(26th)
July: .307(25th)/.740(17th)/.324(16th)

2009: .315(26th)/.765(9th)/.334(9th)

The point I was trying to make at the time still stands though, that this team’s hitting has been better than their starting pitching.

Pitching Runs Above Average: -43.0

Dunn

You wonder if he’s regretting signing with Washington now?

I think he regretted it then..

…he thought he was worth a lot more than what he signed for. I’m assuming he didn’t even want to sign a 2 year deal, thinking he could get more this offseason.

Omar Minaya is such a massive fail.

That org is in shambles.

Resigning Ollie Perez pretty summed up their horriblness in one nice shiny little package.

He’s fucking terrible at baseball and they gave him a big fat three year contract.

I wonder what Neil Huntington means when says he needs to be "moved"

to be trade Zach Duke.

With the way some of their deals have looked, I figure the price wouldn’t be crazy.

Per the BBTF chat

Perez has been talked about in a potential Duke deal.

Which would be bad. Like, really really bad.

Trade for Ian Snell.

Hmmm...more evidence against

the 2 of the Big 4 Argument from fangraphs

$52 million for Halladay’s performance + $8 million for the draft picks = $60 million in total value. He will be paid $22 million over that time frame, so 60-22 = $38 million.

To acquire the Jays ace, teams should be expected to surrender something like $40 million in value.

What does $40 million in value look like? Something like three terrific prospects who are not that far from the majors. No one’s giving up players from the Matt Wieters/David Price mold, but it’s going to take several players from that second prospect tier, the top 25-50 type guys.

Phillies fans – that’s Dominic Brown, Kyle Drabek, and Carlos Carrasco. Mets fans? Fernando Martinez, Wilmer Flores, and Jenrry Mejia. "

AKA, not 2 of the top 15 prospects JP.

yeah

I’ve posted something similar from BtB. They basically say Halladay in worth one top 10 hitting prospect (Smoak). I guess that is assumimg Toronto doesn’t pick upthe rest of Roy’s 2009 salary.

Whatevah!
SI’s Jon Heyman hears the Red Sox are still in talks for Gonzalez. Buchholz, Lowrie, and Masterson are “in the mix” with the Padres asking for Westmoreland and Anderson. Heyman adds, “However, the sides are still pretty far apart, and Boston is still in the mix for Martinez.” Heyman also says Bell’s name has come up in these talks.

Also, VMart may end up in BOS…

Posted this in the AM thread, should have put it here...

It looks like the team chemistry is starting to build up tremendously. Which makes me kind of hoping we stay put at the deadline. We have the pieces, they just aren’t clicking yet. Offensively that is.

The only guy I see who isn’t producing up to standards and who will probably be gone soon any way is Hank. But getting rid of him now for a Nick Johnson would not be seen well by the clubhouse. I kind of picture Hank and MY as the Biggio-Bagwell tandem and it seems Ian likes him too. We DO NOT want to upset whatever MY has going right now by getting rid of Hank!

Besides, CD will probably be getting a call up in Aug-Sept and that will help out. (hopefully Stella has her groove back) I think that will give everyone a little punch in the arm.

My last two cents would be who to get rid of in the pen for CD’s call up. In a perfect world I would just like to flat out cut Jennings. He isn’t a pen guy, and that’s all he will see with the Rangers. He just looks like he hates pitching out of the pen and will give us half assed production (see IRISP, if they aren’t his, he doesn’t care about it) So that makes him at best a mop up guy and I’d rather see one of our young arms take that on.

I had to post again today… The Rangers looked so damn good yesterday I didn’t want to jinx anything!
