I thought this was good.

Since the halladay deal is dead, who are the rangers going after to help their starting rotation?
12:10
Dan Szymborski: My guess about the Rangers is absolutely nothing.
12:11
John Sickels: I agree, Rangers stand pat
12:11
Dan Szymborski: Too poor to add payroll, to good to dump.

And they answered my question
[Comment From DerekSTheRed]
Why is JP asking for MLB level talent for Roy? Isn’t a contending team going to be looking to add to their MLB roster instead of subtracting from it?
…
Craig Calcaterra: Derek: I think there’s a big Kabuki dance going on in Tornoto. JP wants to look like he’s doing something, but ultimately stacking the deck to keep anything from happening.

The Mariners have traded left-handed pitcher Jarrod Washburn to the Detroit Tigers for
rookie left-hander Luke French and pitching prospect Mauricio Robles.

Random thought
what about centering a package around kinsler/hamilton? And leaving the big 4 prospects out of it? They are franchise players but have had down years, it wouldn’t be hard to fill their production this year, and yes we’d miss them in the future, but I think less so than 2 of the big 4. So maybe a kinsler/kiker type deal is that even close? I am against dealing for halladay, I just think it’s interesting we haven’t thought about putting in either of these guys.

wow
everyone loves their halladay, let’s just compose our whole team of halladay’s and then we won’t have to have any fielder or hitters

Umm ok
Since a kinsler/kiker deal would really compose of our whole team?? Clearly kinsler is very valuable, which is why I think Toronto would be up for dealing for him. But he has not been a major reason for our success this year, and there’s no reason to believe that adding halladay for kinsler would not be an upgrade this year. So immediate upgrade and I think losing kinsler hurts us less in the future than losing smoak + feliz. Smoak will probably have similar value to kinsler in 2 years, and be cheaper… Feliz will be a stud. I’m just saying it’s surprising the idea has not been kicked around.

You'd think
Aaron Hill keeps the Jays from any thought of acquiring a 2B.

i was saying that after 40 games
at some point I still think they’ll come around, but wow, we are 100 games into the season. I understand Hamilton had some of his injury issues, but Kinsler has no excuse.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
It's silly to only judge those guys based on this years stats
Kinsler has a history of performance that makes me believe he’ll get his act together.

Yeah,
I can’t see a significant move. Lee was the obvious move given the price, but maybe Cleveland didn’t want to trade him in league given TRs report that Texas was told by Cleveland he wasn’t being traded.
The only major offensive upgrade I can see is VMart, since it closes an obvious hole, but I doubt I’d want to pay the price their either.
Tough for me to see an obvious trade, other than maybe for a cheap fringy starter like Doug Davis.

Interesting note on JD
Jonah Keri: Joe, teams can ASK for whatever they want. Names are thrown around all the time. I was in Texas last week interviewing Nolan Ryan. Wanted to pop in on Daniels for literally 5 seconds. He was glued to his desk, discussing 17 trades at once. Lots of space between the asking and the doing.

Some commenter said Martin Perez was rumored to be a part of a future Zach Duke deal. Don’t really know what to think about that.

That would be a fucking disaster.
That’s like avoiding a traffic accident with another car (Halladay) and then veering off the road into freaking utility pole.

Tidbits on Dutch
[Comment From Art Vandelay]
Just how good can Derek Holland be?
John Sickels: Holland was badly rushed
Dave Cameron: Holland can be very good. Probably not a #1, but a really good mid-rotation starter.
John Sickels: He could be a number 2-3starter I think, if he stays healthy and confident
John Sickels: Which are big ifs in TExas
Jonah Keri: John, you didn’t like the Earl Weaver/Roy Oswalt bullpen path for Holland? Not to keep name-dropping, but Ryan talked extensively about that tack.
John Sickels: Jonah: No, I like the Weaver approach but I thikn he needed more minor league time before being pushed into even that role.
I agree with Sickels, he was rushed. Not sure why he thinks he won’t be able to stay “healthy and confident” here in Texas though. Seems like a cliche coput.

yeah I saw that
People still assume this is the Mark Connor era and the jet stream makes this a launching pad. I don’t the jet stream is that big a deal now that less and less players are using steroids.

Mad props to Jonah for using the correct word - "tack"
Gawd I hate reading posts that talk about taking the right “tact”, right up there with annoying posts about grammar. Carry on….

Holland
I completely agree that he was rushed, I didnt think he was ready when he got called up since he’d barely had time in AAA and wasn’t blowing people away there.
As far as the healthy and confident remark, i can understand it. Guys tend to wear down here it seems, either mentally of physically

Dave Cameron: WAR is easy, John. Wins Above Replacement scale. 0 is Triple-A guy, 1 is a bench guy, +2 is a league average player, +3 is a minor star, +4 is an all-star, +5 is a borderline MVP, +6 is a franchise player, +7 is a Hall of Famer, 8 is Pujols

[Comment From bbb]
If the rangers make the playoffs, can you see them making a run to the WS as they have handled all but the detroit and new york in the AL this season?
Jeff Sullivan: bbb – Sure, I could see that. I could also not. The Rangers aren’t very good but the playoffs are the playoffs.

And this
HowardMegdal: I think anyone who makes the playoffs can get to the WS- but the Rangers strike me as too pitching thin to bet on.
Why is everyone so ignorant in just assuming pitching is our problem?

I know
I asked him what he thought of the Angels since their pitching is worse than the Rangers. Doesn’t look like they are going to show it though.

Because our pitching
is weak. Only the defense is holding it up.

Uh, shouldn't you think our entire rotation sucks?
FIP/tRA = not friendly to rangers pitching. And he said pitching, not run prevention.
the preceding post was a great success.
Well, true.
I’m used to people not distinguishing between the two though.

[Comment From red hook]
The Rangers recently said that money isn’t an issue for adding the right player. Do you not believe them?
Dan Szymborski: I do not believe them. We’ll ask Adam Morris when he arrives later.
Craig Calcaterra: Red Hook: Don’t believe them for a second. Hicks is strapped on two continents and across two sports.

He says not only does the team not have money for balls (make your own jokes here), they don’t have the money to fix the turf.

Shit
chrisneedham: heyman says the marlins are pretty close to getting nick johnson. package built around ryan tucker. i suspect they’re haggling over cash.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Johnson
Nick Johnson’s power is gone and so is his defense. I think we’re better off without him.
I have a feeling his power would improve, at least a little as a LHB in the RBiA
And the .400+ OBP is why I want him. We’ve got plenty of guys who can bop homers. Shit, that’s about all we’ve got.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Oh I agree
Trust me, I’m as sick of the dingerz related offense as everyone else. But I don’t think you can evaluate a hitter in a vacuum, and the fact appears to be that Johnson as an entire offensive package just isn’t that valuable. OBP is not that great if it’s all singles, walks, and a double every now and then. Though he may improve in Arlington, as you say. But considering his current ability and injury history, I’d just as soon say no thanks. Willingham would be far more desirable, though I guess the price would be too high.
x
OBP is not that great if it’s all singles, walks, and a double every now and then.
Sigh.
OBP is great, no matter what form it comes in. Having a man on base is never a bad thing. Especially for a team that can’t put men on the basepaths with any kind of regularity.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Replacing one guy who has a .330 OBP with a guy who has a .400 OBP is not going to fix this offense
Especially when you are losing the slugging you would be losing.
Now back in June when we had Davis and his .260 OBP it would have seriously helped to acquire Johnson. But with the way Hank and Jones are playing Johnson is not a significant enough upgrade to fix this ailing offense
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't see it
OBP is great – I’m not arguing otherwise. But it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Luis Castillo has a 401 OBP. Luis Castillo is a below average to average offensive player, because he has no power. Johnson, as he is right now, is an average player because of his lack of power. Offensively, he adds minimal value to the Rangers because of it. He does do one thing – get on base – way, way better than anyone else on the Rangers right now. But that’s all he does better. Just because he can talk a walk doesn’t mean all of the sudden our offensive production will take off.
