hey dude
did you look at my defense of my belief in Luke French? Luke French, Tommy Hunter, Guillermo Moscoso are all potential TORPS.
Bobby Jindal '12
You have a very lose definition of a TORP then.
Those guys could be decent back-end/mid roto peices, but none of them have TORP potential.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
ERA should not be a measure of a pitchers ability.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
but not useful for projection is what he's saying
and bottom line is runs allowed, if we’re getting technical (you can argue that wins is the bottom line, too, i guess)
the fact that you can put millwood in front of this year's defense
and get a completely different result than putting him in front of last year’s defense is all you need to know about ERA
and you are projecting. you are trying to project TORP – using ERA as the criteria as to whether you are correct. might as well use wins (which is actually the real bottom line).
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
ok let me get this straight for you guys
I explained why these guys would have low ERA’s in the “Washburn Traded” thread. I’m not an idiot, I’m a stats guy to the core. I don’t just think that they would have low ERA’s because they have/have had low ERAs.
Bobby Jindal '12
"not an idiot"
youtube begs to differ
and i have no idea what you mean by your last sentence. are you contradicting yourself? weren’t you trying to say hunter was a TORP?
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
yes
and it is for the same reasons that I give in my defense of Luke French… in the “Washburn Traded” thread. Tommy Hunter is very similar…

anyway
3.75 is a pretty low standard for a TORP
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
At the moment, it would put you 18th among AL starters..
It’s a horrible yardstick for measuring TORPs or anything else, but it ALMOST works at this moment.

no i mean if
a manager would stick with them for 7 starts… then there’s a likely chance that they have below a 3.75 ERA.
Bobby Jindal '12
yes it is in my mind...
it is the threshold. Have an innings eater with under 3.75 ERA then you have a lot of wins.

Rangers aren't going to make a trade, are they?
I was surprised by some of the 100% throw-outs in earlier threads, but I could be wrong
I don't think we make a trade right now....
and maybe look at a D.Davis or Garland after they clear waviers…depending on how our rotation pitches the next few weeks
by death of the cool on Jul 31, 2009 1:13 PM CDT reply actions
What does D. Davis or Garland bring to this team
I’d rather have Feliz get a chance to start, or even see spot starts eventually from Poveda or Kiker. That could be interesting.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
They bring a vetran that has had success....
If Feliz or Kiker was going to get a chance to start this year….it would have already happened instead of throwing Mathis/Nippert/Moscoso
by death of the cool on Jul 31, 2009 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions
that's not true
Kiker and Poveda may not be ready yet, and Feliz wasn’t ready earlier in the year. I don’t think you can say “because it hasn’t already happened, that it can’t or won’t happen.” That’s ridiculous.

Hmm.. i hadn't really considered just how well it fits. That does sound good.
Well, I’m sure JD was involved at some point Ill trust he tried.

Somewhere in North Dallas, the post is being written right now claiming...
that JD hid behind this money problem and used it as an excuse to avoid pulling the trigger.

I'm kind of OK

Angels trade coming?
from some OC paper..
Something is afoot in Minneapolis.
The Angels recalled two players from Triple-A Salt Lake when they only have one roster spot. Coming up are utility man Sean Rodriguez and catcher Bobby Wilson.
Adding to the suspicion that a trade is imminent: Juan Rivera figures to get most of the designated-hitter at-bats on the artificial turf at the Metrodome, so why do the Angels need a third catcher?
Is one of their catchers being shipped out in a trade. Rodriguez’s arrival could mean either Howie Kendrick or Brandon Wood is being sent to another team.
Details are just coming in. Stay tuned to the blog.
evidently he has a hammy strain (per MLBTR)
but yea, its strange

if you disagree, it’s fine, but you need to understand that there are a lot of people here who are:
1) infinitely more informed than you
2) pissed off at the world/frustrated from lack of sexual activity
3) drunk
4) itching to take a gigantic dump on your head
If and when you disagree with someone here and decide to voice that disagreement, you should first:
1) Make sure it’s not Josey.
2) Research your position and theirs thouroughly using metrics beyond ERA and/or AVG
3) Craft a well-thought-out, humble response

Look at the comments under Jeff Wilson's blog post on dallasnews.com. What a bunch of rocket scientists.- Keith Law
That's the problem
the only patience you see is from veteran hitters who got their basic approach with another team, and just use Rudy as a swing doctor. I also think its more than just Rudy, but our Team Leaders like MY endorse the approach.

Team Leaders like MY endorse the approach.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
cause he derives most of his OBP from BA
and you can see it in their approach. 2-0 doesn’t mean potential walk; it means hitter’s count
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Because he and Kinsler
were quoted as saying this offense didn’t need more patience, just more energy. Career MY is like an OBP-AVG of 50 career.
When he doesn’t hit 320, he isn’t so productive. He needs a high BA to be productive.

Is there any science behind looking at that spread??
Just a gut feel, but I would bet there is a pretty strong correlation between a team’s OBP-BA number and the consistency of their offense.
I know it’s there using simple common sense, but does anyone know of anyone analyzing it?
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Except
our C is one of the worst performing positions we have offensively, and neither Davis or Blalock have shown they can reliably hit lefties.
IF you are going to upgrade the offense, I don’t see any other player that could have done it and meshed in with our team.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
Not necessarily
If we played VMart at catcher against RHP and 1B against LHP (allowing us to sit Hank) that would be fine. The problem I see is we would only play him at catcher and you would essentially be stopping Saltys development for the season and possibly next season since he has a very reasonable option price for next year. Plus the drop in defense from the catcher position could be a huge issue
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Sucks to be Salty
if you are the guy that is the easiest guy to upgrade in the lineup, thats generally a bad thing.

But a pretty big decline defensively which I don’t know how that fits this club. Our defense has been superb so far and helped us more than an improvement from one guy offensively will
