Nice.  The only downer for the evening is that when the pizza I ordered was delivered tonight, the driver said he'd given my buffalo wings to someone else.

Got lots of change tips.

I’m a guy who never cared too much about tips, but some of my coworkers could get very irritated by those guys.

Average tip for Papa John’s in north Carrollton was about 2.50-3 I’d say.

by brettgardner on Jul 31, 2009 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Fresno, CA... I'd average $5 a night or so

I got really irritated the time when my now-ex-wife told me that the $6 I got wasn’t going to be enough because she had a lot of (unnecessary) driving to do the next day.

by Inkara1 on Aug 1, 2009 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Depended for me on which pizza place I was working at...

Double Dave’s, I’d average better tips per run, but lots less runs per night, at Gumby’s there were tons and tons of runs per night, but not very good tips per run. I’d usually get 2 or 3 bucks. I’d also usually try to jigger the price to be 16.something to 17.something if I took the phone order, figuring they’d give a 20.

When the client would give me money, I’d ask, “how much do you need back?” Some clients would look at me and I could tell they were trying to do the math for the exact change in their head, and I would tell them, “this isn’t a math question.”

have any problem telling people they needed to tip. There were regulars that lived like 5 or 10 blocks away that would get their pizzas an hour after they ordered because they didn’t tip. If they asked, I’d tell them, "hey, we deliver to you all the time, we know you aren’t going to tip.

by brettgardner on Aug 1, 2009 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

For me, I'd leave whenever they had the pizza box in the delivery bag ready to go

When I was out, I didn’t want to be out there any longer than I needed to… I wouldn’t get any more money for the trip if I took longer.

If I had multiple pizzas, I’d either go to the farthest one away and work my way back in, or go to the closest one and work my way out. I wouldn’t go far, then near, them medium, then back.

Plus, as I’m sure you’d have found out if you actually did that… the same people that don’t tip anything are the first ones to call and bitch if the pizza shows up cold.

by Inkara1 on Aug 1, 2009 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions

I only delivered pizzas not piping hot twice

Once, they screwed up on the address on the delivery slip and I ended up like 3 or 4 miles away from the guy who had really ordered it… the 5000 block of Warner (east-west) is a long way from the 5000 block of Winery (north-south). Luckily, when I finally got to the right place, the guy was so drunk he’d forgotten he ordered a pizza so he didn’t really care it was room temperature and I think I got a dollar or two in a tip.

The other time, it was supposed to go to a church and the boss only wrote the church name on it. I thought the church was a different one, went there, found out I was wrong, so I delivered the other order, then tried to find the one church, only to find out it was the church BEHIND THE FUCKING RESTAURANT. >.<

Where did this tipping expectation originate?

I always tip, but this mindset that because you’re a pizza delivery guy or a Sonic carhop or waiter/waitress, I owe you a tip, is ridiculous. Where the hell does that sense of entitlement come from?

How exactly are you entitled to extra money for doing your job? You didn’t do anything spectacular. You did the bare minimum that is required to have that job. In almost any other job, you don’t get random cash thrown at you even when you go above and beyond what you’re asked to do.

I always hear the “these guys don’t get paid much” argument, but if that’s the case, find another damn job. Why do I need to subsidize your career decision?

To show how messed up the whole idea is, almost everyone throws a buck or two to the girl who walks 10 yards to bring you your food at Sonic. How often does the guy in the back who is working his ass off over a hot grill all day get a tip? Not very often, believe me.

Would always be confused when they called in with a 9.99 coupon and got quoted a ~14 price.

by brettgardner on Aug 1, 2009 12:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Most places do now

When I worked in pizza (2002-2004) we didn’t do a delivery charge but I got 50 cents per trip for gas money regardless of whether I got a tip or not.

They’d dump out my bag, count up the number of delivery slips in it and put aside 50 cents per slip. Then they’d total up the dollar amounts on the delivery slips and set that aside. Then they’d take out the (I think) $20 or so in change the bag started the night with and put that with the dollar amounts on the delivery slips. The money that was left over was what I got in tips and was put with the 50 cents per delivery and given to me.

Thankfully the place I worked at didn’t have those stupid lighted signs to put on top of the car so it wasn’t so obvious so soon that a delivery driver carrying a hot meal and a bag with at least $20 in cash was showing up.

I usually delivered in the not-so-bad parts of Fresno but there were a few deliveries that the hair on the back of my neck was standing up. Actually, I think one of those was also the same delivery where it turns out the girl paid with a stolen check and I somehow missed it.

what do you tip the guy at Souper Salads? All he does is get your drink refills. You do all the rest of the work. $1? I used to wait tables, so I get the concept of tipping, but it’s not exactly like you’re beating the guy’s balls off getting 2 glasses of water in 20-30 minutes, is it?

Easy enough when you face Galarraga, French, Olson and Vargas in 4 of those games.

The problem is the offensive approach doesn’t change regardless of who they face. Marlon Byrd, for example, doesn’t seem to realize that swinging at every first pitch works out OK against Garrett Olson and Jason Vargas, but it’s not so great when Justin Verlander’s on the mound.

You know the ole AL West isn't as bad as bad people thought....

I mean we are 15 over and still 3 back….that’s pretty damn good battle there.

Van Damn, who orders wings w/ their pizza?

That’s like asking for a side of cream gravy with a double baconcheeseburger.

I’d like the ribeye, medium rare.

Any appetizers?

Porkchops, medium well, and throw in some chicken fingers…

The key to the 2 pizza sandwhich is....

to use a ranch dressing spread on the chicken fried steak, not the traditional cream gravy spread.

Mmmm. those are pretty good.

the crust...

Meh. Your average standard pizza crust I will only eat if it just arrived nice and fresh.. overdone at all from them or from reheating, cold.. very thin margin between worth eating and not.

Although thats the reason I like the pizza hut pizzone thing.. no traditional crust but the bread tastes great.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 1, 2009 12:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I liked the thick sourdough crust we had at the place I worked at

We even left an inch or so around the edge and we’d paint it with butter, garlic and parmesan before putting it in the box or on the pan to take to the table.

It also helped that we used an oven with two large ceramic bricks the pizzas sat directly on instead of the no-brain-required conveyor belt oven. Our oven required us to actually check the pizza every now and then to see if the bottom looked good and to poke out any bubbles forming in the crust so they wouldn’t get huge and make the toppings slide off.

by Inkara1 on Aug 1, 2009 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions

i usually skip the crust at a buffet

i like the crust the least, so i get to fill up on more of the good stuff

by kevinkinsler on Aug 1, 2009 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions

There was a guy I worked with

Who swore that Cici’s put some ingredient in their crust that expanded in your stomach, making you fuller faster and reducing the amount you’d eat.

by brettgardner on Aug 1, 2009 12:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Nah, they just coat each crust after it comes out of the oven with melted garlic butter

Worked there a year in high school in the 90’s. Unless it’s changed…

Between the Roy Halladay rumors and the troll wars last night, and the trade deadline hoopla today, plus the GDT’s, which went long because of the rain delay… seems like there’s a decent chance we broke it to me.

According to the power search feature

There have been 7,528 comments between yesterday and today.

Just doing some random sampling for comparison, July 28-29 there where 5,274. July 20-21 there where 3,544. April 6-7 (opening day) there where 3,698. Last year on July 30-31, there where 5,146.

And no, I have nothing better to do.
