The Cleveland Indians have designated Matt Herges for assignment.

He's not a bad righty bullpen arm...FIP around 4 the past three years, including a 3.87 FIP this season and a 3.55 ERA, and was on a minor league deal, so the financial commitment isn't going to be much.

Any interest in the Rangers trading for him?  They'd have to give up something with some value -- it wouldn't be cash considerations or Davis Stoneburner or something like that -- but I can't imagine it would take a guy in the Rangers' top 20 right now, either.

i dnt think

he is an upgrade over anyone currently in our bullpen w/ the exception of guardado and i can’t see them only having 1 lefty…even though i dnt think it really matters

by dustinvandeman on Jul 4, 2009 12:55 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably not

Given that he won’t be free talent, I don’t think he’s enough of an upgrade to give up a player and a 40-man roster spot for.

Mind boggling move by the Indians

that’d be like us trading Aki back in the day cause we were “moving forward.”

Well

Herges is only on a one year deal, and isn’t likely to bring draft pick compensation.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 4, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does that make it a logical move?

herges is way too sweaty

he’s always sweating every time I see him. In fact, it’s quite apropos that the pic included in this is of him wiping sweat off his face.

He would probably melt here in Texas.

A.J. Murray

He’s a situational lefty. Herges is a middle/setup man.

It all depends on what we have to give up

I don’t think this bullpen desperately needs Herges, but I wouldn’t mind having him here to add some depth to the bullpen in case we get some more injuries and/or Jennings moves into a starter’s role.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Random Bullpen thought

I know nothing about Matt Herges.

My thought is we need another lefty in the bullpen. Honestly, one to replace Eddie, although I think Eddie will stay all year. So, why not AJ Murray instead of Mathis. I would love to trade for Mike Gonzalez of the Braves, but they are still in the race and many will scream of injury concerns. Would Sherill from Balt. interest anyone? Price is probably to high for either, but what about another lefty in the bullpen. Mahay?

If he replaced Guardado on the roster, sure.

If we’re going to insist on keeping Guardado’s fat ass though, I don’t know that we have room for him.

Eddie is very, very well liked by his teammates

He is the “class clown” and I think his value/impact as the comedian of the team is hard to overlook

Oh please

I feel like I’m on EPSN all of a sudden. Andruw Jones’s “Playoff experience” makes up for the fact that shouldn’t have a place for him and his sub-800 OPS since April 19th, and now Eddie Gaurdado’s value as “team comedian” makes up for his 6.37 tRA?

At this point I’m waiting for Woody Paige to jump out and tell us Jason Grilli should be in the HOF because he used to be a Rockie, while Harold Reynolds tells us the reason our offense is scoring less runs this year is because our starting pitching has gotten better.

Get on base or die, Salty.

So, you're going to use Jones' slumping after a hot start

to prove he’s no good, but you’re going to forget how much Guardado improved after a terrible start? You’re very selective. Right now both players deserve roster spots until and unless obviously better options present themselves.

AJ Murray seems like an obviously better option.

And, at the very least people could not use Eddie's personality as a reason to keep him around.

If being “team comedian” really meant anything, maybe we should sign Krusty the Clown.

normally I would agree, but he is in alot of ways the "glue" that holds the clubhouse together

There is alot of stuff you won’t hear about concerning his antics in the locker room, during flights, during their “Kangaroo Court” hearings.

he is their Chris Farley

would you not get bummed if Chris Farley got kicked out of your clubhouse?

If Chris Farley had the highest FIP, HR/9, OPS against and lowest K/9 in the bullpen, no, I don't think I'd be too bummed.

I mean, I get that Guardado is a nice guy and all that, but it’s a miracle his ERA and WHIP have improved to what they are right now. He is pretty much one of the most hittable pitchers on the team (only Holland and Harrison have higher BA’s and OPS’s against), definitely the most hittable reliever, and he doesn’t strike anyone out to make up for that fact. What’s keeping him afloat is that he’s good about not walking people and he has the third-highest strand rate in the bullpen (second-highest if you discount Doug Mathis for SSS).

Unless he’s out there whispering magic words in CJ Wilson’s ear or something, I just don’t see the reason to keep a ticking time bomb out in the bullpen.

Get on base or die, Salty.

I would seriously consider that, if I where the Rangers and he wanted to retire

Make him the bullpen coach or something. That seems like something he could excel at.

I don't know that Murray

is obviously a better option, all things considered. Yes, I think he needs to get a shot and he’s having a nice year so far, but I would certainly not say it’s a slam dunk that he’ll be much better than Guardado. It’s entirely possible that Guardado’s “presence” in the bullpen helps everyone else in that pen, in the same way that Vizquel has helped Andrus. I’m not certain that Murray is enough better than Guardado to make up for losing that intangible asset.

Guardado may not be in the pen all season, but I don’t see the need to rush him out of there right now.
