That's about as good as it gets on July 4th
Holland did well, and didn’t let his mistakes haunt him, the offense put up some fireworks and Julio Borbon even got to come out of the basement for an inning.

now if we can just get Holland to not throw 2 strike meatball fastballs right down the middle
he’ll be fine. But it was certaintly a fun game, the offense has turned it around, i just hope we can stay consistent., but i dont think we are that type of offensive team

Chris Davis has started 69 of the Rangers 79 games this year...
In those games the Rangers have averaged 4.46 runs while giving up an average of 4.59 runs.
In the 10 games Davis has not started the Rangers have averaged 7.4 runs while giving up an average of 4.2 runs.
Of the 6 games in which the Rangers have scored 10+ runs this year… 3 of them were from the 10 games in which Davis didn’t start.

Is there anyone left out there that doesn't think he should be sent down the second its deemed smoak is ready?
If not just go ahead and do it now with blalock at 1b?
I’m rooting for davis more than any other ranger right now but its just not happening.. I’d like to see him hit .300 in AAA for a month.

by DSheppard on Jul 4, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think with almost total certainty that they will send Davis down at the ASB if he's still not hitting
they have to know they cant afford to go down a stretch run with his bat in the lineup. Whether or not Smoak is ready by then probably wont matter, they’ll likely just give Hank the time there until they deem Smoak ready.

A guy being in the playoffs a couple times doesn't give him some kind of special insight into winning in the postseason.
Andruw isn’t gonna whisper in the young guys ears and make them magically better-equipped for the postseason, sorry. I don’t buy that.
Veteran presence as far as being a good clubhouse guy or something, that makes a little more sense. But the idea that “playoff experience” is some kind of a valuable attribute is bullshit.

I know he’s still giving up homeruns like he’s Jason Grili or something, but that K/BB ratio is sexy as hell… as soon as he can refine his approach a little and stop lobbing the occasional meatball, we should have an ace on our hands. I can’t tell you how giddy typing that last sentence made me.

Jones is 1-5 as a PH this year, and has a career .191/.333/.383 line coming off the bench.
He hasn’t hit lefties as a platoon DH, and if Hamilton needs to DH when he comes back (and he should) we won’t be able to play him full time.
I just don’t see that he brings any enough value or flexibility to keep around. Kind of like Catalanotto didn’t.

and it’s the first time he’s done anything remotely like that in those two months. After the last two years he put up it’s pretty easy to wonder if he’s falling back into that, this week has been awesomely hopeful. But you’re clinging to some extremely small samples in that.

small sample
Yeah but everybody’s season can be split up into small sample size segments which will normally encompass hot streaks and slumps. Everybody has peaks and valleys in their season.
But when you’re talking about a guy who only plays half the time, it’s even more pronounced. So Jones’s 2 bad months are like an everyday player’s one bad month. But he’s been so good during his playing time other than May thru late June that the sum total of his small sample size segments adds up to an .871 OPS with slid power and plate discipline despite the fact that his slump period lasted longer than his 2 peak periods (most of April and now his last 9 games).
He’s shown twice now that he’s still capable of heating up and being a major benefit to an offense and that Andruw Jones never even came close to showing up at all for the Dodgers. And the fact that he’s capable of these hot stretches despite sporadic playing time makes him a useful guy to have around.
I think he’s a guy you’d want to keep just in case one of his hot streaks happens to coincide with the timing of the playoffs. He got hot in April…he’s gotten hot in July…what month follows if this is an SAT question?

he's helping the team
with that type of performance over those last 11 starts even if his OBP is .298
The Rangers are 5-6 in those 11 games but the losses are hardly his fault – he had good games at the plate in 5 of those 6 losses when hardly any of his position player teammates did. He had good games in 4 of the 5 wins so he’s helped the team in 9 of his last 11 starts:
6/13 v. LA: Homered once in 4 PA and supplied the only offense in a 3-1 loss.
6/14 v. LA: Singled and homered in 4 PA accounting for one third of the grand total of 6 hits the Rangers produced in a 6-3 loss.
6/16 v. HOU: One of his 2 bad games. Went 0 for 4 but the Rangers won anyway, 6-1.
6/19 at SF: Got a single and drew a walk in 4 PA, scoring once, in a close loss
6/21 at SF: drove in both Ranger runs with a 2-run homer, accounting for the only offense in a very close game which the Giants won 3-2.
6/25 at ARI: His2-out 2-run HR in the 5th inning was pretty crucial considering this was the game the Rangers won by 1 run in extra innings. Also drove in another run with a “productive out”
6/27 v. SD: Doubles and walked and drove in a run in 4 PA in a game won by the Padres 7-3.
6/28 v. SD: His other bad game. Went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts and a GIDP and was a major (non-)contributor to getting shutout 2-0 by the likes of Chad Gaudin.
6/30 v. LAA: Singled and walked, scoring once and driving in a run in 5 PA and also stole a base
7/3 v. TB: Singled and scored in a pitcher’s duel the Rangers won 3-1. I guess a .250/.250/.250 game line doesn’t really qualify as a good game but it was an important run in a close game.
7/4 v. TB: Got the Rangers going with a 3-run HR in the 1st and added an RBI double later in 5 PA in blowout win.

German or Huffman
i’ve advocated bringing up German for Davis until you’re ready to roll with Smoakbut I don’t think I’d prefer him over Andruw. Jones is still evidently capable of hot streaks where he can really help the offense despite only playing a couple times a week. Yes, I know that he was bad in May and June but that doesn’t erase the fact that he was phenomenal in April, helped us win games that month, and he’s apparently back into some sort of good groove now and has helped us win games recently. Say what you will about his the last couple months but the guy has an .871 OPS overall, supplies power and some walks, and is capable of hot streaks without needing to play every day. That’s a useful guy.
Also, his abnormally low BABIP (.253) indicates that his overall slash line should probably be even better than it is.
As for Royce Huffman, I’m 100% certain I’d rather have Andruw Jones than him. He’s 32 years old and has posted OPS between .740 and .762 in AAA each of the last 3 years including this one. You’d rather have a guy with an OPS against AAA pitchers (in the PCL no less) 100 points lower than the one Andruw has against major league pitchers? Seriously?
by brianphayes on Jul 5, 2009 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm just trying to find a solution for the "who's gonna platoon with Hank" question.
I suppose Andruw does have some value as a bench bat, but his walks have decreased and he has no real position. Just like with Frank Catalanotto, I just think it’s kind of hard to carry a guy who hasn’t performed well in the platoon role and doesn’t have a position.
Of course, I’m looking at this primarily from the standpoint of what I would do when Hamilton comes back, which is DH Hamilton full-time, and chances are the Rangers probably aren’t going to do that.

Andruw v. LHP
You may correct me if me math is wrong but I believe after his performance off Price tonight, he now sports a .360 OBP and .478 SLG against lefties for the year.
Nobody currently in the system is likely to be that productive given 86 PA against major league lefties. Certainly not Huffman, unless he’s some MAJOR extreme split lefty masher who is absolutely terrible against RHP but plays against them anyway, which I’m pretty sure isn’t the case since he’s a singles hitter (although i’ve never looked at his minor league splits).
I’d play German at 1B and Andruw at DH against LHP, with Byrd, Hamilton, and Cruz in the OF, Murphy and Blalock on the bench, and Borbon back to AAA when Hamilton is activated.
by brianphayes on Jul 5, 2009 1:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess that makes sense
Considering Wash refuses to play Borbon.
Andruw has taken 15 of his 23 walks vs. lefties this year, so he’s at least been able to get on base against them. Although it’s worth noting that he has just 5 walks in his last 83 PA’s after taking 18 in his first 85, so who knows if that approach that allowed him to take those 15 walks vs. lefties is still there.
The main problem I have with Jones is he’s being misused as a cleanup hitter by a manager who thinks his “experience” makes him some kind of middle-of-the-order savant despite the fact that his approach has broken down in the last month and a half and his overall season really hasn’t been that spectacular beyond his first three games.
Basically, I’d be more inclined to see the value of keeping Jones around if I didn’t think Washington’s overuse of him would continue to undermine the positives of having him on the bench.
Get on base or die, Salty.

i think its nitpicking trying to find a replacement for Jones
you arent gonna find a better righty bat in our system now. Also, who’s to say Wash wont use another kid who is just called up the right way? I mean, Wash, judging by his history, would rather play Murphy and Blalock b4 he let a guy German or Huffman play. Beyond that, Im not sure how you can trust German or Huffman or someone like that to outproduce Jones.
Another thought, who out there has the potential ability of Jones? Overall his numbers are fine, if not great, and even though he’s struggled since April, he has the potential of producing an .850 OPS or higher the rest of the way. Clamoring for someone else to replace Jones could very well be shooting yourself in the foot.

I agree
he shouldn’t be cleanup, but I really don’t think overusing him is an issue. Last night his use meant that Chris Davis wasn’t playing, and right now, any game that Chris Davis doesn’t play is a good game. The team looks a helluva lot better with his ass on the bench.

Yeah, it does
Davis really needs to be sent down. Of course with Smoak in OKC now, that makes that a bit harder to do, but they could share time between 1B and DH down there. Shit, that’s what they’ll have to do if they’re both on this team in the future.

I wouldn't mind Volquezing Davis at this point.
Send him down to extended and really have him work on things from the ground up.
Obviously the physical ability is there. The guy has the athelticism and the bat speed, and the power is massive. I love the guy’s potential and think he’s still got a shot to be a star, but there’s enough wrong with his approach at this point that I don’t know if a simple “God down to AAA and play there” kind of thing is going to solve anything.
He may need wholesale mechanical changes to succeed, and I don’t know that AAA is the place to try to implement something like that.

I don't think
there is much chance he is going to be a star in the majors. I just don’t see a lot of stars, even big strikeout guys, have 3.5:1 K/BB rates in the minors. I think he will always have mediocre averages and weak OBPs that will limit him being a star.
More of a Henry Rodriguez type player, where he will bubble up and have a big year or two than a star.

Well, duh
but this is not really that simple. Go over to fangraphs and look at a graph of his season production day by day, it really is a cliff. This is not a case of hot streaks here and there, it’s a case of a guy who started the season hot and has basically been slumping ever since. We have a couple of weeks of hot production sandwiched in between 2+ years of suck, so this is no small issue.
That said, I’m ok with him on the team at least until they think Smoak is ready. He’s good enough to play occasionally if used properly, and as long as he’s not overexposed I’m fine with him hanging around. I definitely applaud his attitude, which has been exemplary.

I found most of the characters to be shadowy and uninviting
Outside of the Joker, there’s not much dimension to any of them, and thus it made for a pretty boring viewing experience
I guess that’s what happens with these endlessly recycled sequels, the writers just assume the audience will sacrifice character development for a ‘twist’ in the story
That’s how it felt to me. That’s why I asked if I was the only one who felt that way. Stupid.

I must've missed the "modern classic" hype.
Most of the reviews I read suggested it had more complexity than the average comic-book movie ~ and I agree, largely because of Ledger’s performance. In the end, though, it was still a comic-book movie, and I guess I didn’t expect anything more from it than that.
It was certainly better than “Watchmen,” which probably never should have been made into a movie at all.

I think you've (we've) been conditioned to the prevalent use of multiple sides to characters
and in alot of movies today, thats the entirety of a movie sometimes, the alternating from good to bad of a character pretty much defines the plot.
But I dont think you have to have a lack of certainty in your character’s moral fiber or motives to make a great story. The Dark Knight was much more of a throwback in that regard, a classic battle of two certain enemies and polar opposites. In that regard, i guess, it was not very modern.
Anyways, yes, its not not something ‘new’ or nuanced at all really, but that certaintly doesnt forbid it from being good, if not great. I often find old ideas remade with a new vision the best ideas.

found Dark Knight to be ok, not great. The story was very good, but I’m not always impressed when an actor gives an over the top performance in an over the top role. Ledger was much better than Nicholson, though, and it was a solid performance, though not some kind of revelation.

That is precisely the problem
with post-burton movies: Batman realism doesn’t work. Who gives a shit about gritty verisimilitude and film noirish atmosphere and existential conflict in a comic book adaptation? That absurd incongruency – coupled with horrible writing and characterization – made them a beating to sit through, especially the second one. Keep your Bales please and give me Nicholson and DeVito thanks.

Why can't Nolan have his interpretation of Batman?
Every comic book writer has his own style when writing for these characters. Some want more realism, some want to take it as far as possible. Both can be good if done right and that’s what Nolan and Burton were able to do with their movies. Two different types of Batman, two very good series of movies.

The thing is, as a viewer, I don't care.
You can trick it up with different actors, different cinematography, different directors, whatever…
In the end, it’s the same story… There’s nothing refreshing about Bale or Nolan.

I should say, in my opinion.
I guess in a comic-book enthusiasts opinion, the darker, edgier Batman is a breath of fresh air
by oc on Jul 5, 2009 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
This was the first time you actually saw Batman be Batman. Nolan actually had a Batman that didn’t kill people as opposed to the Burton one that had a pretty high death count for a guy who didn’t want to kill people.

I find reviews like this elitist and mostly shallow. I dont even know where to begin.
how do you feel about the people making michael bay reviews?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I wasn't that impressed.
But I’ve never been into comic books-turned movies. Spiderman was okay, but that’s largely just because Kirsten Dunst looked pretty damn good as a redhead.

The second one was much more campy
just like a Sam Raimi film should’ve been (and the first one wasn’t)
