Minors - 7/5

A focus on the really young ones today, as Ross and Perez look to continue their awesomeness.

SPO - 8:30 - Ross

I'm in love.  Ross - 5/3/0/0/1/10.  5:0 GB:FB.  All of his outs tonight were via K or GB.

HIC - 2:00 - Perez

Perez is God.  5/3/1/1/1/8, with the 1 run coming on a solo HR that really wasn't.  Nooch is 2/2 with a walk and a 3 run bomb, and Matt West is 1/2 with a walk.

BAK - 9:45 - Bleier

FRS - 6:00 - Ballard

OKC - 4:00 - DH Eyre/Rupe

1st game - Hamilton's 2/4 with a 2B and 3B, so his wheels are working fine at least.  Smoak's 1/3 with 2k's, which obviously means RUDY'S ALREADY GOTTEN TO HIM.

AZRL - pm - Rijo?

Obligatory Shroom love.

Bianucci

3-run bomb.

Perez gave up a solo “homer” that hit two feet short of the top of the wall, per Buchbinder.

Vin DiFazio

We briefly covered this on draft day, but is VD a prospect or a Hogan-esque org catcher?

Seems to have good discipline and power, but he’s 23. Maybe he should be promoted soon to see if he’s an actual commodity or a vet beating up SS kid pitchers. Whatever he is, seems like a good guy to shepherd young arms thru IPs.

by shroomer on Jul 5, 2009 11:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

you'd have to look at the links

that were provided after the draft, but i remember that he had some injuries (I believe non baseball related) that stunted his progress a bit, but the Rangers definitely view him as a legit prospect and believe they got a steal getting him where they did (I’ve never heard that before right after a draft).

I am optimistic he could prove to be another advanced college hitter we find late (ish) in the draft.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Yes those are the quotes

He had two bad things happen where he basically didn’t play his junior year and missed time as a sophomore too. If I recall correctly.

He’s shepherding the kids right now but I think he’ll get a look in Hickory soon.

That's what I want to see.

Have Hogan go from the AZRL team to Spokane and send VD to Hickory.
Bet they just send Hogan to Hickory instead.

by shroomer on Jul 6, 2009 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think he was kind of a sleeper pick due to injuries

if he can stay healthy, I see no reason why he cant be somewhat of a prospect. If he continues like this, I gotta think he’ll get some regular time at either Hickory or Bake b4 the year is out

While i dont think our system will likely end up in the top 3 or 4 systems when ranked at the end of the

year, I think we will regain that mantle pretty quickly in 2010 and 2011 with all these talented kids in A ball. It wont likely happen this year, but soon, I think Perez will be considered a top 10 prospect in baseball. Ross and Weiland will be considered much more highly regarded if they continue to develop, those two kids have a ton of potential. As Font develops, he could be certaintly considered another top 50 prospect if he can harness his control (as he’s shown recently). There are just so many talented kids down there that you have to feel like given some time, we’ll have several new top 100/top 50 type prospects coming. Its very exciting.

by blalock84 on Jul 5, 2009 11:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think the Rangers have a pretty good chance of having a top 3 system at the end of this year.

They have Smoak and Feliz at the top end, and a massive slug of talent at the bottom, with Kiker, Beavan, Moreland et al in the middle. If Scheppers gets a few innings in this year, that will help. Everyone is in agreement that they have quite the haul in the Latin market. It’s incredibly deep, even if it has "only " two or maybe three top-20 guys.

yea, we may only end up with 3 maybe 4 top 100 guys, but we have a ton, a ton of guys that are right near the cusp or will be

there given a year or two. It will be interesting, but its the depth that we have that gets me excited and stands out to me really.

"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"

by blalock84 on Jul 6, 2009 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rangers' farm system rank

will depend on whether Smoak and Feliz qualify and whether Scheppers and Purke are signed. If all four of these are Rangers’ prospects at the end of the year, then the team should have at least five players in the Top 100 (along with Martin Perez) with Smoak, Perez, and Feliz likely in the Top 50. If Ross continues to rack up the K’s, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in a Top 100 list or two.

The team also has a few fringy guys who could work their ways into Top 100 slots with strong second halves. Despite his awful first half, Max Ramirez could still return to the Top 100 with a strong AAA finish and a few quality at bats in the majors in September. Quality ML time might also get Borbon in. Wieland would have to be pretty dominant the rest of the way, but his scouting report could get him in as well.

Catcher Max Ramirez has missed a string of games because of soreness in his left wrist. Ramirez has missed some time with soreness in his right wrist, too.
