Int'l signings
Confirmed international signings according to at least one local report: shortstops Jurickson Profar (Curacao), Luis Sardinas (Venezuela), and Luis Mendez (Venezuela), outfielder Chris Garia (Curacao), and pitcher Daniel De la Torre (Mexico).
Incidentally, Profar, who gained repute as an 11-year-old when he led Curacao to the 2004 Little League World Series title as that squad’s pitching ace but will play shortstop professionally, took batting practice at Rangers Ballpark today and went deep – from both sides of the plate. He’s 16.
Profar, Sardinas, and Garia are all switch-hitters and all considered premium athletes with full toolboxes (which is not to denigrate Mendez and De la Torre – I just don’t know anything about them yet). It may not be a stretch to suggest that the Rangers’ 2009 international position player class could be the club’s best since director of pro and international scouting A.J. Preller and senior director of baseball operations Don Welke were hired five years ago.

do we know if it was w/ wood or metal?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I don't know why they'd bring a kid to the ballpark and have him use a metal bat.

I'm also a fan of this. It's gotta be awesome for the kid.
But I don’t know how that’d be a marketing tool.
The number of people who care about the Jurickson Profar signing has gotta be pretty freaking limited.

Yeah, I can't imagine
they’d really sell a lot of tickets to that. It’d be Zywica hanging around in a trenchcoat and goyogringo carrying around a 4 foot spreadsheet of DSL names.

Heh, looking at their nationalities, seems like that new Dominican Academy sure is paying dividends.
We seem to be owning Venezuala right now, though. Perez, Edwin Escobar and now Sardinas. I like it.
I’m guessing we’ll see a slew of Dominican signings show up over the next few weeks.
Any word on Pedermo? He’s the other big fish we’re still in on, right? Love to see that get done, obviously.

We also sailed down to Curacao the other day
with a big Texas Rangers flag attached to a pole, thrust the pole into the ground, and shouted “I claim this land for the Rangers!”

of course we had the faces of AJ and Omahh on the flag too

Yeah
those two are the ones who did it. Preller left one of his fishing hats on the pole.
