You know what's annoying?
Being on the phone with someone who’s watching the same game and having them do play-by-play 10 seconds before it happens on the feed you’re watching.

You know what's worse?
You’re in a bar and the channel you are watching is HD and the one behind you is not and they are 2 seconds off so you alwasy see what happens after everyone else is screaming about it.
Or if you're watching in your home on a DVR but your roommate isn't, causing that 2 second lag.

I sure hope so
But according to TR’s blurb:
The Rangers are hoping Padilla can throw a side session in the bullpen on Monday and be ready to go either Wednesday or Thursday. He would bump either Derek Holland or Tommy Hunter. Padilla was on the disabled list earlier this year with a strained right shoulder but this is not considered as severe.
I guess that could mean they’d just push one of their starts back, hopefully.

Chris Davis question pt. 2
Just to bring the game thread crew back in, nobody thinks he’ll have solid trade value at the end of the season? Even with solid defense and power? Sure the strikeouts are horrendous, but doesn’t his youth at least lessen that negative a bit? And am I the only one who thinks his second half will be better than his first?
Certainly we should all agree that with Smoak’s progress, Davis’ value at 1st is lessened. So if Smoak is the answer, when does Davis give us more value then after this season?
Your uncle molests collies.
When he comes back and hits the cover off the ball as a DH and backup 1B
in 2010. Or so we hope…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
Not if he's still hitting around .200
I don’t think he’d have a whole lot of value, at least as a first baseman hitting that low.
Ron Washington...giving hope everywhere to the kids who eat lead paint chips of being a big league manager when they grow up since 2007.
Defense is worth
jackshit at 1B. You are judged on your bat at the position.
If it was SS or CF, his exceptional defense would have more value.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
I'd agree with that
but he should project as a better hitter from here out, no?
Your uncle molests collies.
by 3k on Jul 5, 2009 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions
He may project, but as far as his value at that point...
you’d be selling low until he fulfills that projected hitting for a decent average.
Ron Washington...giving hope everywhere to the kids who eat lead paint chips of being a big league manager when they grow up since 2007.
Not necessarily.
And he’d have to hit a whole helluva lot better for the Rangers to get decent value. And if he did so, wouldn’t it be smart to keep him around for 2010, so that his value climbs all the way back?
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
If he has sucked for 3 straight months
and they’ve tried everything to straighten him out, why would you think he will change? It may take a full offseason or time in the minors to get his shit together.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
If you're on an Albert Pujols level, though, your defense is worth a whole lot more than jack shit.
It makes your bat, essentially, as valuable as the same production at third or even second base.
Especially in the NL
I’m not entirely sold that his defense is worthless, just not as valuable as his OPS in the AL
Your uncle molests collies.
by 3k on Jul 5, 2009 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions
No,
it doesn’t.
If a SS hit like Pujols and played average defense he’d be worth much more than Pujols.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
I imagine if you wanted to trade him right now...
…you’d have a bunch of teams interested in him, on the theory that they could buy low on him, not give much up, and give him a chance to turn it around.
And I imagine he’s not trade bait for the same reason.
The guy is only 23, had two straight terrific seasons in 2007 and 2008, and now is struggling. He may need to go back to the minors to get himself straightened out, but he’s not worthless.

Your uncle molests collies.
by 3k on Jul 5, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Depends...
if he’s hitting in the .250 region with power and great defense, his value increases quite a bit as a trade chip. If he’s still hitting .200 though, you’d probably be trading him 50 or 60 cents on the dollar.
Ron Washington...giving hope everywhere to the kids who eat lead paint chips of being a big league manager when they grow up since 2007.
Unless he destroys the ball during the second half,
he’s not getting fair value in return. And if he does destroy the ball during the second half, the Rangers will want to keep him ~ or wait for him to accumulate even more value in 2010. Why the rush to trade him?
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
Not rush
but take the opportune trade. If he improves over the second half, shouldn’t there be an equal concern that he will struggle out of the gate to start the 2010 season?
Your uncle molests collies.
by 3k on Jul 5, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Depends on how he improves ~ but probably not an equal concern, no.
Davis hasn’t made the necessary adjustments this year; if he proves he can do it, that’d be a concern lifted, both immediately and for the longer term.
And unless he absolutely catches fire in the second half, his simply improving isn’t going to give the Rangers a chance to get fair vaulue in a trade.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
That's assuming his fair value is that high
It’s a fair argument, but based on your assessment of his value (where I agree with you). But, if we’re wrong, we’re eating our asses at 1st.
Your uncle molests collies.
by 3k on Jul 5, 2009 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Why?
If he sucks for the rest of this season, he’s bound for the minors, and Smoak will be up eventually. How are the Rangers “eating their asses” if Davis never reaches the potential he seemed to show last year? It would suck, but then the real missed opportunity was not dealing Davis this past off-season…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
I guess I could agree
The real opportunity might have been this offseason, but with so much history of offensive success, it’s hard not to expect an uptick in the second half this year, no?

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

Did he say what year?
It could have only been 1981-1983 if it happened in the Astrodome.

Rangers equivalent…Michael Schlacht, Tommy Hunter, PTBNL
Would you have dealt Schlacht, Hunter and something for Hairston, and plugged him in as your every day dH?
I would think hard about it
Hunter would be the one i wouldnt want to give up.
I wouldn't give up Tommy
straight up for him, I’ve said this before but I value Tommy a lot if not as a starter then a late inning reliever

Not enough of a tracker record to do that for me.
I have my doubts he hits for a .800 ops from here on out.
the preceding post was a great success.
B-R has just slowed to a crawl
I assume from everyone looking up if Joe Morgan has ever homered against Nolan Ryan.
I got to the Joe Morgan page, but it's not loading the "vs. pitcher" tab

Trivia question: What are the 3 lowest season batting averages in Rangers history...
…in a 400+ PA season? (Name the player and year.)
I think one of them is probably Dean Palmer circa 1994
?
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
When I went looking for this info, I would have guessed he made the list as well...
…but no. (His lowest was ’92… .229.)
i knew he had a sub .230 year
and thats not one of them? wow

I know Mendoza of the Mendoza line played for us sometime in the 70's too

I assume they all happened
late 60s early 70s.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
Mikey Tettleton circa '95?
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
No.
His lowest as a Ranger was .238 in ’95.
I will say that I did correctly get one of the three on the list… but I guessed him largely because he was the last Ranger I remember hating as much as I hate Chris Davis (as a ballplayer, of course).
I almost want Davis to be sent down...
…just to find out what in the hell you are going to talk about once he’s gone.

Yes. He actually had the two lowest:
1973 — .199
1983 — .201
The others are not the 3rd lowest.
The 3rd lowest was .219 (in ’95).
The .219 in '95...
…Benji Gil.
Fwiw, George Wright ’85 barely escapes this list as he only had 393 PAs… while hitting .190.

Well, to me, “hot” is seeing the ball well and hitting it all over the ballpark, not nescessarily just hitting a bunch of home runs and not doing much else. That’s more of a power streak – not that those are a bad thing or anything.

this extends to all Texas sports. You get the odd case here or there elsewhere, but not to the same sheer numbers as in Texas it seems.

By the way. . .
For those who don’t already know the story, Joe does, in fact, have a history of telling flat-out lies and passing them off as epic stories of his playing days.
There are others, but that was the big one. And ESPN announced he would apologize on air. The next week, when Jon Miller prompted him about 4 or 5 times to do so, Joe litterally just sat there in silence on the air. It was very uncomfortable.
