Monday morning Rangers things
So the Rangers head out to Anaheim today, for a three game set against the Angels, and then play four at Seattle. Pretty big road trip leading into the All Star Break.
Drew Davison says Scott Feldman didn't have his best stuff last night, but he fought through anyway and allowed just two runs.
Vicente Padilla will not start on Tuesday, after experiencing shoulder soreness. Instead, Dustin Nippert will be activated from the disabled list. I'm guessing Doug Mathis will be optioned to make room for him, and Brandon McCarthy will move to the 60 day d.l. Meanwhile, Matt Harrison says that August 1 is a reasonable target date for his return from the disabled list.
Kevin Millwood deserved to be an All Star, Jim Reeves says, but was bitten by the rule that says every team must have one rep.

More accurately, Millwood was bitten by the unwritten rule...
That Michael Young must be this team’s token rep.

I understand the nod for Wakefield, but really… he’s not an “All-Star” nod guy.
If Millwood go snubbed because every team can only have one extra rep
Then he got snubbed because the players voted MY in, who became our one extra rep.

Well yeah, Hamilton being there sucks too and you could probably blame it on him too.

ESPN
Holy god, you guys, was anyone else as annoyed as I was with the broadcast team last night being so blatantly pro Rays? I mean, they are terrible all the time, but last night they went over and above their usual awfulness as they didn’t stop their homerish lovefest for every player on the Rays the whole night! The worst was how many times they encouraged the viewers to go vote for Pena in the All Star Game (not really talking about how Kinsler was up for the same vote).
I hate ESPN. So goddamn much.
My Dad even called me last night
To complain about the EPSN commentators.
Mind you, my Dad is a guy who thinks Tim McCarver is a commentating savant. And even he was annoyed by Joe and those other two boneheads last night.

In my opinion...
…it’s not so much pro-Rays as it is pro-AL East, in my opinion. You’ve got to remember which two teams pay ESPN’s bills — NYY and BOS — and remember that it’s in ESPN’s best interest for those two teams to have a viable common opponent, to build the drama and justify putting the Yankees and Red Sox on national television a couple dozen more times this season.

I think it has more to do with the Rays being the defending AL champs
ESPN is sports targeted at the small minded, and I think they feel like they have an obligation to talk up the defending league champions each year. I’d guess they probably do the same thing when they do Phillies games.

Ok, but...
…they kept saying how the Rays are in the hunt, trying to catch the rest of the AL East, etc. etc. etc. As far as when I was watching, they never even hinted that the Rangers were in first place.
Well then
Actually a little of both may be true, I guess. I started trying very hard to ignore the commentating by the fourth inning, myself, so I don’t remember if they mentioned the Rangers being tied for first place at all, but I obviously do remember the incessant talk about the Rays.

At the end of the game, they even had the balls to say that Texas is back in the hunt
Oh yeah, first place for 2 months, being tied for 1st place as of late, but only after last night’s win were we back in the hunt. Assholes.

Well Texas did hemorage games hard there for a little bit
So I really don’t have a problem with that statement. Again, most people just assume that this a smoke and mirrors thing going on here and that it is not sustainable. (Hell some people on this board do). I think after losing the lead like they did and then pulling back together and getting tied for first along with ten over will demonstrate to a lot of people that there may be more to this team than originally thought. So I just view it as another way to say that this team really has a chance to be competitive in September and October.

How did we hemorage games?
We played .500 baseball. We are still 10 games over .500. AT some point you have to give credit to the Angels for playing really good baseball
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I actually agree with you
but from a national perspective they Angels just blew by us in just a few short weeks like they were supposed to do. Next the Rangers were supposed to go into operation shutdown and fall behind the M’s as well. Instead they have won 7 of the last ten and keep up with the Angels. This was the part that was unexpected. (Again on a national coverage perspective.)

Well the Halos blew a 2.5 game lead
to us. This is going to go back and fourth all summer long get used to it. The national media better get used to it also because this team isn’t going away.

The problem for the Rays
is that they won’t have any more games against the weak NL East to fatten up their win total.
Death and taxes...
…and Joe Morgan making an ass of himself. At this point in the season I’m almost numb the beating of Miller, Morgan & Phillips. You pretty much have to grit your teeth and take the swift kick to the nuts when watching those three asshats.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
Harrison as a LAIE
Just when it looked like he was getting the league average part down, he spits the bit on the innings eater part.
Hope he can get healthy and prove durable because a LAIE is quite valuable, especially while they are cheap. But that value is largely tied to the ability to eat up 200+ innings, and Harrison’s injury history is starting to get lengthy.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
Injury history
Hasn’t he only had that month or two with Atlanta where he had arm problems before this season? After that, he had the turf toe thing, but that’s not exactly a future injury waiting to happen. Am I forgetting something from before this season?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I didn’t think Feldman’s stuff was bad, but without looking at the Pitch FX, I was curious last night how many times he maybe got squeezed a little. ESPN wasn’t that great at showing the pitch tracker – they only did it for a few at-bats. I wish they would have put it up there, but Joe Morgan was more concerned about talking about “Deep In The Heart of Texas” and talking about the benefit of being caught stealing.
I really love that dang pitch tracker.
I wish they’d keep it up at all times.
Shrink it down and put it up top with the score and count (kind of like they do with the little base icon that lets you know who’s on base).
The pitch tracker is a wonderful, wonderful invention that makes watching the game a better, more fun experience.
It needs further integration for sure.

the espn one is more accurate to the actual called strike zone IMO
the one FSN has calls low balls that are never called strikes definitive strikes…. Its kind of stupid

I like how it has that tracer that shows the pitch’s late movement. Much better than a dot just showing up on the grid, like FSSW does.

Definitely
especially since the camera angle makes tracking the pitch movement with your eye live difficult at times.

The Mavs get to stay mediocre for a while longer
yeah I would've called it a necessity in fact
They need a PG and he’s easily the best available considering all he cost was money and not talent (in a trade).
The Mavs aren’t done either — they’ll make another move or 2 though they might be small moves.

**One player I’m paying close attention to is Eric Hosmer, hitting a disappointing .249/.352/.367 this year for Burlington. Watching him play yesterday, I was very impressed with his selectivity….indeed, he drew three walks….he has a really good eye at the plate and doesn’t swing at bad stuff. He is also a very sharp-looking defensive first baseman. As a runner, he is slow, but heady and alert, fundamentally sound and rather aggressive. Of course, none of that will matter if he doesn’t hit, and my initial impression of his bat (other than his strike zone judgment) was negative. His bat speed look poor to me. I discussed this with a veteran scout, who told me that Hosmer has developed some mechanical issues with his swing that are short-circuiting his power production and reducing his bat speed. The scout believed that his problems are fixable, and praised the other portions of his game. For sake of Hosmer and the Royals, I hope that’s true. It was just one game, but teammate Jason Taylor and Wisconsin prospect Brett Lawrie both showed much quicker bats yesterday. We’ll see how things go the next two days.
Pretty harrowing read if you’re into the Royals.
Then this on Smoak…
**As you probably know, the Rangers have promoted Justin Smoak to Triple-A Oklahoma, where he’s gone 1-for-5 with two walks in his first two games. He’d hit .328/.449/.481 in 50 games for Double-A Frisco. Now it looks like I’ll have to head back to Oklahoma City in early August to take a good look at him. Was it a mistake for the Royals to prefer Hosmer over Smoak in the 2008 draft?
