What I'm interested in seeing

is how their handling of Kendrick works out for them.

I'm endlessly amused by their refusal to give Brandon Wood a shot.

He’s OPS’ing .952 in AAA this year.

I feel bad for the kid, but I love that they’re wasting him.

Hopefully some GM pries him away from LALA for pennies on the dollar and he has a nice toldyaso season like Russ Branyan’s been having.

Agree

They won’t trade him, he’s too valuable. But they won’t play him either.

Like you said, it’s amusing… and fine with me.

next year when 'Sean' is gone

he’ll finally get his shot… but he’s been seriously wasted. You’d think when Howie got sent down they’d have given him more time, but no.

Are they really gonna let Chone walk?

He’s really good and he fits in perfectly with their smallball style.

If they do let him go it’ll probably be because of all those walks. Gotta swing the bat, Chone! Walks only clog the bases!

My favorite part is Gary Matthews Jr.'s .618 OPS.

How’s that $10M/year looking now?

Chris Davis’ OPS: .671 (Also, Davis is making less than five percent of what GMJ is making.

Hunter’s having a great year with the bat, so far, with an OPS of .940.

Adenhart’s line pretty much sums up Angel pitching this year, I think. An ERA of 0.00 but a WHIP of 1.67.

Also, with Lackey and Palmer right next to each other in the stats, it’s easy to see why Lackey should end up being just fine and Palmer is a lucky SOB. BB/K: Lackey 16/49, Palmer 31/42.

One, MY that needs to change if the Rangers are going to over take them, Kinsler needs to re-find his stroke this swing for the fence deal aint cuttin it right now, why not place Elvis or Murphy in the lead off spot for awhile, do something to help Kins figure out how to hit again

Yep

the number one problem with this team is good old fashioned batting average.

If you compare this team to last years team

2008 .283/.354/.462
2009 .258/.319/.457

As you can see, slugging is roughly the same as last year. The big difference is BA and OBP. As you say, raising BA raises OBP. If the teams BA was raised .025 to .283, the OBP would be raised to .341, so they would only be off the OBP by .013.

So from a BA/OBP standpoint, this team is .025 lower in BA, and .013 in “non-BA OBP” (Walks and HBP).

So the problem is primarily a BA problem.

kind of amazing that they've maintained SLG with such a drop in BA

Yep

If the team was able to hit at the .283 clip they did last year, they’d probably have a near identical OPS to last year’s team.

by Gdawg on Jul 6, 2009 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it would actually be...

..about 30 OPS points better than last year’s OPS since adding 25 points of BA would correspondingly raise the teamwide SLG almost 50 points.

To get the Rangers team BA from .258 to .283 in the same # of PA, you’d need to replace 70 outs with 70 hits which, given the 09 team’s current ratio of each type of hit to total hits would yied an extra 39 singles, 17 doubles, 2 triples, and 12 homers or 127 additional total bases which would give the team a .503 SLG with an overall line of .283/.341/.503.

(Obviously the math isn’t perfect since replacing 70 outs with 70 hits would cause them to have 100+ more PA than the number they actually have)

Batting average

I don’t see how this team gets close to a .283 batting average.

You put Kinsler and Hamilton at .300, Blalock at .275, and Davis at .250, and it only gets them to .273.

Now, assuming those were all singles, that would move the team’s line to .273/.334/.472, for an OPS of .806, which would be highest SLG and third-highest OPS in the league.

I wish there was some way to get Milton Bradley back, but that’s not going to happen.

.300

Excellent point!

We should promptly trade for Christian Guzman (.318), Scott Podsednik (.311) Skip Schumaker (3.01), and Felipe Lopez (.301). Those guys are solid, .300 hitters.

Rangers are going to make financials available to potential buyers soon
Another team for sale, the Texas Rangers, is likely to put out financial data soon for potential buyers to peruse, according to a source familiar with that process. Bids of $550 million are likely, sports bankers and baseball officials said.

Rangers owner and Texas billionaire Tom Hicks hopes to have bids for the Rangers by mid-August, although negotiations and financing could result in a deal not closing until after the season, the source said.

Hicks said in May he was willing to sell control of the team. In April, creditors declared Hicks Sports Group, which owns the Rangers and Dallas Stars hockey team, in default on $525 million in loans.

Maybe you can contrast lineups to see what each team’s pitchers are up against?

Or …. you can put together a slide show presentation and business plan, and sell the Angels out from under Arte Moreno ?

Based on my research it's from the Latin word mille

Which means “thousand” so MM would be a thousand thousand. I’ve seen it used in the oil and gas context as well (normally for cubic feets of gas). Didn’t realize it wasn’t a well-recognized abbreviation until I looked into it.

It's short for a Crash Test Dummies song?

Works out well for me

I can stay late at work and get stuff done instead of staying late at work and having hte game running here and getting nothing done.

Yeah, I’m not going to complain about the game being at 7 p.m. my time.
