OT: Pixar Poll
I'm fascinated by Pixar. The consistent high quality of the movies amazes me, especially given that so many people are involved in making them. I just saw Up and thought to myself....wow, they did it again. The pre-story story of the main character's life, which i think takes about 20 or 30 minutes at the beginning of the film is absolutely beautiful. Maybe the most elegant film storytelling i've ever seen. Anyway, thought i'd put up a poll to see what some of the favorites are.

I agree
Pixar really tells a great story.
My wife is funny, she doesn’t cry at anything but war movies, with the only exception being the back-story in the movie “UP.” Another example of great story-telling.
My favorites though are Wall-e and Monsters Inc.

Best Picture
I happened to see Wall-E again last night and realized that it deserved a Best Picture nomination over Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button. Maybe even over The Reader. Just brilliant writing and execution. Imaginative sociopolitical commentary gives it the edge over other Pixar films for me. UP/Ratatouille/Finding Nemo/Toy Story/Monsters are all near-tied for 2nd in my book.
Cars definitely brings up the ahem rear-end, right below The Incredibles.

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

Pixar and all of their movies that I have seen have been just irritating and cutsey. That does not equate to good. The only ones I have not seen are Cars and Wall-E.

That's a backwards analogy.
Someone saying Nickelback is the best band of a generation is completely opposite of saying Pixar sucks. Pixar sucks, just like Nickelback sucks.
Ok, Pixar sucks a little less than Nickelback. Saying Pixar rules is like saying the Jonas Brothers rule. It’s sugary BS crammed down the throats of the public, and somehow people come away saying they are good. No clue why.
by FuturePants on Jul 7, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK
It’s more like saying the Rolling Stones suck. An opinion, but a dumb one.
Also, nobody but a niche group says the Jonas Brothers rule; Pixar films are all but universally acclaimed by people paid to be critical for a living. It’s pretty sad that you can’t like something that a lot of other people like. Speaks to a serious identity problem, not to mention a serious case of douche-chills to the surrounding populace.
by brettgardner on Jul 7, 2009 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well Nickelback is acclaimed worldwide, too.
Does that make them good? No.
And It’s said that I can’t like something that a lot of other people like? And that indicates an identity problem? Huh?
You want to fall in line with the masses, that’s fine, but my identity is fine. That identity hates Pixar. Deal with it.

by brettgardner on Jul 7, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nickelback is acclaimed worldwide?
I thought music journalists and anyone with a critical ear pretty much loathed them.
I think Brett’s point is that while pixar movies are commercially successful on the same scale as other media behemoths, they are also praised by serious critics. I don’t think these facts alone are enough to justify them as great movies, but at least they add some credence to the idea that there is some actual substance in the movies.
I don’t think it should matter how much or little congruency there is between a person’s tastes and the tastes of the masses, but to rely on something’s popularity as a reason not to give it a fair appraisal is kind of silly.

Of the Pixar Movies I've Seen
They’re pretty well done as far as kids movies go. Well done kids movies should be enjoyable to adults, too, and those that I’ve seen have been. The dialogue is good and all of that.
The only problem I have is the "look’ of the movies. To me they just have no soul. The movements of the characters are very life-like, so that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s the “lighting” and the texture of the final product that keeps me from calling any of them “great films”. Once you get past “this is an incredible animation” there’s nothing visually stimulating about them, and great films should have a dramatic visual impact in my opinion.
It’s not a technological issue. It’s the way they have made them. Anything is possible in a CGI studio now.
I personally like non-CGI animations like Tim Burton’s. Those have what I’d call “soul”. But you could do the same thing with CGI for the most part.
