I see you voted in the CPP
but didn’t provide any commentary? or did I miss it?
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
I mean there's 178 posts already, not much else to say about #1
Before I saw that it had pretty much been covered, I was going to say that, going in, I would have thought that Feliz vs Perez for #2 would be interesting. But it looks like Feliz will win that easily, based on the #1 voting. It’s a tricky vote for me because I think that Perez is special. And I don’t use that term lightly.

see, a highlight of these CPPs for me
is reading your takes on these guys. Even that snippet above is kinda illuminating to me.
Anything you have found encouraging/discouraging about Feliz this season. Still see his ceiling as TORG?
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
Yeah
I’m not really deterred much if any by his season. This was his consolidation year.

Robbie Ross, LHP, Rangers (Short-season Spokane)
A second-round pick last year out of a Kentucky high school, Ross signed for an over-slot bonus of $1.575 million, but the deadline deal prevented him from making his pro debut until this year. Despite being a 5-foot-11 southpaw, Ross is actually a power arm with plus control, as he has been clocked up to 94 mph so far this summer while showing potential will his slider and changeup. He struck out 10 over five innings on Sunday, and has 34 whiffs against just four walks in 20 1/3 innings on the season, so he is definitely someone worth keeping an eye on.
Nothing new there, but always good to see it from outside eyes.
Click the LINK
then scroll just a little for some brief Ross video. Listen to what the guy claims the radar gun said last night. Doesn’t Ross look a lot like Kiker? O’Campo looks skinny and Podraza’s HR swing looked positively Damon-esque.

btw, im clueless when it comes to mechanics, but i really like the snippet i saw of Ross pitching there
of course, im always partial to guys who can sling it with high leg kicks.

"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Ross sounds like what we always hoped Kiker would be
A power lefty with control and a crazy K-rate.
Well
Ross is almost two full years older than Kiker was at the same level so there is that small little detail
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Good point, bigsteve
Though I refuse to be rational when it comes to a lefty prospect with a career K/9 that is greater than 15 and career BB/9 that is less than 2.
Ha
Even when said career is ~20 IP in a short season league?
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
You guys need to stop raining on my parade.
Did I mention that Ross’ numbers eclipse what Felix Hernandez (12 K/9 and 4 BB/9) and Neftali Feliz (16 K/9 and 7 BB/9) did in the Northwest League?
Ha
17 months is almost two years? He’s a year behind where Kiker was developmentally.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions
umm its 19 months
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Kiker on June 20 of 2006 was 18 and seven months.
Ross on June 20 of 2009 is 19 and eleven months and three weeks
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions
For the arithmetically challenged:
Kiker DOB: 11/19/87
Ross DOB: 6/24/1989
On June 20 of 2006, Kiker was 18 years and 213 days old.
On June 20 of 2009 Ross was 19 years old and 361 days old.
19 – 18 = 1 year
361 – 213 = 148 days
148 / 30 = 4 months and 28 days
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions
From November to June
December, January, February, March, April, May, and June
Thats 7 months
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
You’re forgetting to subtract that number from three years. 36 months – 19 months = 17 months.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions
What does 3 years have to do with anything?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Did you actually read what I posted there?
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes but im confused
19 months after Kiker was born Ross was born
How does that all of a sudden make them only 17 months apart?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Because we’re not comparing how much older Kiker is than Ross. We’re comparing how much older Ross was when he started at Spokane than Kiker was. Kiker debuted three years ago.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 6, 2009 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions
OK thank you
I wasn’t trying to argue I was truly confused. I was comparing simply their ages. For some reason it didn’t click that we were on different paths.
To that point he is still well over a year older than Kiker was with professional experience under his belt (albeit in extended and instructs and such). It doesn’t diminish what Ross has done but we shouldn’t also be discounting what Kiker did and has done.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
DOB
Kiker: 11/19/87
Ross: 6/24/89
Thats a few days over 19 months difference. Don’t know what calendar you are looking at
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I can't see the link,
as I’m posting from my iPhone. But there was certainly no 97 out of Ross last night. He was 90-94. Hit 94 a handful of times.
Thanks for clarifying, Dr. Cole
I will tone down my enthusiasm (but only just a bit). On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your excitement level regarding Ross? Are you hearing any buzz among the scouts?
Did you get to see Braden Tullis a few days ago? How interesting is he?
It looks like Matt Thompson had a solid night. What was his velocity? How’s his curve? Is it time to begin conisdering him for inclusion in the Rangers’ Top 30?
I'm actually not in Spokane
Just talking to some people that had reports from a legit radar gun there. I probably won’t see most of the Spokane guys until instructs. I’ll be in Hickory in a few days, though.
From what I saw of Thompson in Spring Training, I’d say he’s absolutely a top 30 guy, even before I saw what he’s doing in Spokane. He’s got a low-90s fastball with a hammer of a curveball. And I think he’ll add some velo and develop that changeup. He’ll be in my top 30 next year, and probably top 20. Maybe even higher.
I’ve still never seen Velazquez in person. He was already kicked off the AZL team and sent home by the time I got there in ‘07, and obviously he wasn’t around at all last year. All my info on him comes from scouts, coaches, Rangers’ officials, and teammates. I hear nothing but rave reviews about his talent.
However, there are two photos of Velazquez here: http://www.asgbaseball.com/2007_0217.htm
And one other thing
Did you get a photo of Velazquez for Shroom?
Bianucci to Bakersfield per Lucas
Saw one comment in the morning notes, but I know many on this board have been pining for him to get promoted!
Also from Goldstein
Mike Bianucci, OF, Rangers (Low-A Hickory)
Sunday’s stats: 2-for-2, HR (15), 2 R, 3 RBI, BB
An eighth-round pick last June out of Auburn, Bianucci is a wide-bodied outfielder with a plus power and surprising athleticism, and he’s been the best hitter in the Sally League this year, batting .335/.404/.604 while leading the circuit in slugging and ranking third in on-base percentage. The probably of course is that Bianucci is 23 years old and from a big-time college program, so it’s not especially surprising to see him put up big numbers at this level. High-A won’t be much of an indicator either, as he’ll move to the high-octane environs of the California League this week, so we may not really know what we have here until Bianucci gets to Double-A, which should be by 2010, if not earlier.

be interesting to see what comes of him, Tim Smith and Moreland. Im really starting to jump on the Tim Smith bandwagon.

Bianucci
I completely suck at predicting success of young minor leaguers but I’d like to point out that I was on the Bianucci bandwagon the second after he was drafted (of course naropean apparently had me beat by a month).

Smoak/Davis Dynamic
Does anyone else get the idea that the Smoak promotion/Davis demotion were done in concert? I’ve got to believe that having the guy who wants my job batting right in front of me might be the single best way to snap me out of a slump. Perhaps Davis will stop thinking when he goes up to bat and simply start looking to knock the crap out of the ball.
Dog eat dog
I’ve been thinking about that lately – seeing more brazen competition for jobs over the next few years as the farm talent dopplers.
eh, now thats a good use of doppler
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
I think Davis is pretty well focused on what he has to do to get better and isn't all that concerned about what Smoak is doing.
There’s room for both anyway.
Wonderboy, what is the secret of your power? Wonderboy, won't you take me far away from the mucky-muck now. -- Tenacious D
The OKC radio guy claims
Bobby Jones said he’ll use Davis and Smoak like you’d expect – splitting them between DH and 1B. But he also said Davis would play some 3rd base, too, in order to keep them both playing everyday.
Moscoso and Hunter

I was wondering that, too
The AZ rooks play a game and a half today, finishing off a suspended game from June 27th on top of playing the regular scheduled one. Maybe we’ll see Alvarez somewhere in all these innings that need to be pitched tonight.

that he was swinging the bat well, but his shots seemed to always be right at someone. glad to see that his supposed improvement is actually playing out in the stat lines now.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I wouldn't read too much into it
judging by his career #s (this is his 5th yr after all) and his first 3 months this year:
April: ~230
May: 214
first 25 games in june: 205
Thru 68 games ZERO HR
last 6 -.500

NeRa's best game of 2009
No hits, no walks, and 3 K’s through 4.
Fearless forecast: Today was the first and last time that the RedHawks will get shutout with Davis and Smoak in the line-up. A healthy MaxRam would certainly look good in that line-up
BTW, What happened to the guys at hickoryball.blogspot.com?
Nothing new since June 3.
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...
Bob Hersom on CD - interesting read
Texas demoted Davis to Oklahoma City just two days after promoting Justin Smoak to the same place. Both players are first basemen, but Davis has also played third base. So, the RedHawks’ weekly plan is to play Davis three games at third, two games at first and two games as DH, with Smoak playing five games at first and two as DH.
?
why is it so bad that Davis actually gets better at 3B?? He’s already a good defender at 3B, why not give ourselves options if Mike gets hurt?

Why such a convoluted plan?
Jesus H. Christ, if you want Davis to go down and fix his bat, why in the god damn hairy hell would you have him playing such a fucknosed combo of fielding both corners and DHing. Dammit, keep it simple, play 1B and hit, kid. Here endeth the rant.

i really dont understand why its such a huge deal?
who cares, really, i mean he’s played 3B before, its just a way to get him reps. Why does this matter?
