WTF? Tonights Lineup
Murphy sitting for Jones vs. Weaver????????????
David Murphy is the odd man out as Josh Hamilton returns to the lineup for the first time since late May. Manager Ron Washington said he will attempt to rotate Hamilton, Murphy, Marlon Byrd, Nelson Cruz and Andruw Jones between the three outfield spots and the DH hole.
Rangers lineup
Ian Kinsler, 2b
Michael Young, 3b
Josh Hamilton, cf
Andruw Jones, dh
Hank Blalock, 1b
Marlon Byrd, lf
Nelson Cruz, rf
Elvis Andrus, ss

Well I don't think anyone ever actually said Hammy wouldn't be in CF did they?
We just kind of assumed it. And normally that would be ok.. but i mean come on murph is 9 for his last 18, he NEEDS to be in the lineup vs righties right now.
Anyway, when I saw this post I was thinking Kinsler would be sitting.
the preceding post was a great success.
I've never understood why
RWash isn’t a fan of the hot hand.

hmmm
Manager Ron Washington reports that Vicente Padilla has told team brass that he will be ready to pitch Wednesday. The Rangers will likely push everyone back a day, so Tommy Hunter will pitch Thursday, Derek Holland on Friday, Scott Feldman on Saturday and Kevin Millwood on Sunday. That is subject to change.
Washington also revealed that David Murphy could find his way into the picture at first base. Hank Blalock will get the lion’s share of the work, with Andruw Jones getting a shot. Murphy will work at first base, a position he played in high school, before jumping into a game.
The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...
David Murphy could find his way into the picture at first base.
me likey, we shoulda thought of that 1st fellas

Interesting
He would appear to have the tools – LH, height, good hands. Wonder if he’s ever played there?

Ironically, yes
I was playing poker with a friend of his last night and he said when they played on the same team (dont remember if it was HS or college, I assume college) murphy every once in a while played first base, but not a ton because the guy I was talking to was a big guy and not very athletic but he said he could hit.
Charter member of the Dutch bandwagon
i like it too
it helps if Blalock continues to be relatively cold. We arent forced to play him almost all the time
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Thats interesting
If they don’t want to DH hamilton much (and I know he hates to DH) then that may be a decent way to get the best bats in the lineup for the short term.
the preceding post was a great success.
vs. Jered Weaver, all-time
Murphy: 1-9, 3 K’s,1 BB
Jones: 0-2, 1 K
Maybe he’s just guessing Jones is better suited to bat against Weaver. I don’t know.
well
i guess that is something…so i will watch with an open mind instead of going off on wash
yea, i mean
Murph would probably be the last guy id sit, but i dont think any of those guys are bad options.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
i don't think those tiny sample sizes...
in which neither one of them has done anything off Weaver in 10 and 2 PAs against him should trump the fact that Weaver is absolute MURDER against right-handed batters this year (they have hit .178/.235/.249 against him in 202 PA) but is quite pedestrian against left-handed batters (which have hit .262/.322/.481 off him in 237 PA).
So all we really know is that Jones has heated up lately, that Murphy is definitely hot, and that Weaver is MASSIVELY tougher against right-handed batters than against left-handed ones. So playing Andruw over Murphy tonight makes absolutely no sense in my book.
and lo and behold...
…the 3 guys in the lineup who batted left-handed went 4 for 9 off Weaver.
Andruw, Byrd, and Cruz combined to go what…0 for 8 with 1 walk, i believe?
Given the grossly extreme split Weaver has against righties compared to lefties, Murphy should have been in the lineup ahead of any of those guys and it should’ve been a no-brainer. And that’s without even taking into consideration the fact that he’s been on fire lately and was coming off a 3 for 3 performance. Inexcusable managing by Warsh.
Murphy...
I agree that Murphy should be playing tonight, but man seeing the name “Hamilton” in the #3 spot makes that look like an actual, formidable line-up. I’ve been missing that feeling.
In other news...
the NL HR Derby team has been announced…
NEW YORK — Former champion Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Adrian Gonzalez will represent the National League in the All-Star Home Run Derby next week.
AL participants will be announced later.
Murphy should not be sitting against any RHP right now
Since his 0-22 start to the season he is putting up numbers similar to what Josh Hamilton did last year against RHP.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Andrew Jones do what he do. David Murphy do what he do. Is this hard to understand or something?

the one thing i have a real problem with is Hamilton in CF
if wash continues to play Hammy in CF consistently, he will get hurt again… I dont know when we are going to figure this out.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Well Byrd has managed to not run into walls out there.
Obviously Hammy doing so was pure effort and came on fantastic plays, but if he can restrain himself then CF should be ok.
the preceding post was a great success.
i'm just glad
they haven’t extended him yet. i don’t think it’s a good idea until after the year. if he’s lucky, he’ll play in 110 games this year. hopefully he can hit in this second half and bring that ops up to about .880
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."
well, the good thing is that he's likely not gonna cost us as much if we do
IF i were Hamilton, Id be scrambling to get financial security, thats just me though

Wonder if
anybody thought of putting Hamilton at first base instead of Murphy?

Kinsler
vs Weaver in 26 PAs .208/ .269/ .250 . And he is 0 for July. So of course it makes since to start him and sit a red hot David Murphy.

just so its clear
sitting Kinsler wouldnt have any effect on whether or not we’d sit Murph

i think he's pointing out
that wash is sitting a hot hitter and playing a cold hitter. but c’mon, who would you rather have out there? kinsler or vizquel?

Can we please send Borbon back down so he can get regular playing time?
If we have to have a fast black guy on the bench, bring up Boggs (if healthy) or Golson.
6th OF, if necessary, should be Gentry
Boggs is neither fast nor healthy.
I agree that it makes no sense to let Borbon waste away on the bench as sporadically used pinch-runner/pinch-fielder guy. If you have to have that guy on the bench, then give that job to Craig Gentry who, despite being a whiter guy than I am, is probably the fastest guy in the organization and probably about the same level CF defender as Borbon or Golson. The difference is that Borbon and Golson (to an increasingly lesser and lesser degree perhaps), as 23 y/o former 1st round draft picks in AAA still have projectability as prospects and a ceiling of being more than just a 5th/6th OF in he majors and so they need to be playing everyday somewhere at this point in their development stage.
Gentry, OTOH, has the precise skill set that Wash states Borbon is being kept on the active roster for. But as a 25 y/o who’s never really hit anywhere and has yet to advance beyond AA, hr clearly has no future in the majors as anything more than the exact type of 5th/6th OF Washington apparently needs available on his bench. So why not just go ahead and let Gentry do it and let the actual prospects play everyday in the minors.
But until either MaxRam, Smoak, or C.Davis is deemed ready to contribute at the major league level, that roster spot really needs to go to Steve German, who can play all the positions and would actually be a significant upgrade over Blalock as the starting 1B against any left-handed starter.
Sombody needs to take Ron's favorite toy away.

Jones
If he’s really going to start taking playing time away from Murphy against RHP’s now, he’s being overused. Murphy should probably be leading off against RHP’s, and he’s been pretty hot of late.

How many times has Jones started over someone clearly more deserving that doesn't need rest?
Including today I can think of.. one.
the preceding post was a great success.
Murphy needs rest?
He just sat against Kazmir on Friday.

I clearly said murphy should be starting in this thread multiple times
The one time would be today.
the preceding post was a great success.
*although Im sure a combing through of each game could reveal a few other occurence
but im just saying.. this is not a situation where Wash has been snubbing far more deserving players routinely for AJ.
the preceding post was a great success.
Well, that's because he hasn't had a more deserving player to snub with Hamilton out
Unless you count his chaining of Borbon to the bench (which I do, myself).
Hamilton comes back and his first move is to DH Andruw over him or Murphy… not good. Maybe not a trend yet, but not good.

i dont get the jones hate around here
he’s been good against both lefties and righties, he’s shown power, and he’s been one of the few guys on the team that takes a walk. the one knock against him is that he’s been streaky, but that’s somewhat expected for a part-time player.
i guess it’s understandable to get a tad upset when he takes time away from a hot murphy, whom i would also like to see in the lineup against righties whenever possible. but sheesh jones is hardly some AAA journeyman who needs to be DFA’d. And i dont think his occasional use in lieu of a slightly more deserving player is some giant travesty.

the hate comes from his june numbers
.170/.224/.415 14K’s and 4BB’s. He simply hasn’t been good at all since April.
but sheesh jones is hardly some AAA journeyman who needs to be DFA’d.
Well it wasn’t that long ago that he was a washed up fatass that needed to be DFA’d.
