Dinner with the Kinslers and Youngs
Apparently, the Angels and Dodgers have forged an alliance, with Angels fans agreeing to vote for Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp as long as Dodgers fans agree to vote for Angels third baseman Chone Figgins in the fan balloting for the final player on the AL and NL All-Star Game rosters.
Cute.
One day into the vote, Ian Kinsler has an early but narrow lead over Brandon Inge and fellow finalists Figgins, Adam Lind, and Carlos Pena for the final AL roster spot.
Here's some added incentive for the Newberg Report community to help send Kinsler to St. Louis:
If Kinsler wins the vote, Cristina Barbosa-Young and Tess Kinsler and their husbands Michael and Ian will treat one Newberg Report reader who voted, and a guest, to dinner at Bob’s Steak and Chop House in Dallas on an upcoming off-day.
Unlike the standard All-Star Game vote that concluded last week, there is no limit to the number of times you can vote to help Kinsler hold his lead to become the 33rd player on the AL roster.
Here’s where you go on MLB.com to vote: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090706&content_id=5726034&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
You can also vote by text message if you’re a Sprint, Nextel, or Boost subscriber. To vote by mobile phone, text the word “VOTE” to 1122. To vote for Kinsler, simply text “A3” to 1122.
Voting closes at 3 p.m. our time on Thursday afternoon, so get rolling. Vote a lot of times. Email me at gjsneaker@sbcglobal.net once you’ve voted, and you’ll be entered in the drawing for the dinner with the Young’s and Kinsler’s.
And you can still vote for Kemp on the NL side if you want.

Sweet Jesus
Whoring out himself to try and sneak in as the last player on all-star Roster when he does not even deserve to be on the fuckin team, let alone this damn team almost these days.
How about whoever slaps him in the face and tells him to get his shit together, quit worrying about getting into a all-star game, and worry about not hitting balls longer than 390 feet….up in the air. That person will get a free dinner from Taco Bell from me, provided you don’t order more than 7 dollars worth of food.

I'll never understand
why the best player on the team, ARod, Teix, and now Kinsler, draws so much fire.

young better than kinsler?
he may be marginally better offensively so far this year, but most would expect that to flip flop. and he is easily less valuable defensively.

You'll need to go take an impartial look
at Ian’s stats and how this season resembles his 2007 season. It looks to me like 2008 may be his career year. Kinsler is very inconsistent. He is capable of carrying a team for a whole month. Unfortunately, his history shows that he only does it one month per year and this year he did it in April. I seriously doubt Ian finishes the year with an OPS above .800.

What he said
Kinsler is in the midst of the worst slump of his career and he still has an OPS of .831.
I’m pretty sure he’s not going to be even worse than this for the remainder of the season.

like Murphy had don’t matter. Slumps that exist right now are everything.
Its some new math I am unaware of.

What is a slump?
Do they last a week, month, two months? When does a slump become reality? His OPS is being propped up by his hot start in April. Do you think Ian will post another month with an OPS >1.000? I doubt it. That is not his history.

Of course not
But I can easily see him putting up a .750 ops for the rest of the season. And lets remember that he hits leadoff. His OPS needs to include a higher OBP and not just be supported by a high SLG.

.750 OPS
so he will put up the worst season of his career? Lets say he gets 373 PA’s the rest of the yr. Average .750 over the rest of the yr with his current .831 and you have a .790 OPS. So this year will be his WORST yr?
by Michael Cave on Jul 7, 2009 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
"So this year will be his WORST yr?"
Possible. He is in the middle of his worse slump he has ever had in his career. A .790 OPS is pretty close to his 2007 OPS.
Also, he admits to being fatigued and that being tired effects his hitting. Ian has never played a full ML season. Might he get tired again in Sept?

He's not gonna hit
a 750 OPS the rest of the year, unless we are talking MY instead of Kinsler. This slump will end for Kinsler.
As far as him hitting leadoff, thats on RW. Kinsler should be hitting 3rd, the natural place for the best hitter on the team.

Hopefully
it already did with that HR last night. He should be hitting 3rd or 5th right now. I would have loved to see RW put borbon up there for a game or two but it looks like we are a little ahead of ourselves with Borbon because RW isnt playing him so far this yr.

go 2-3 with a BB. That HR last night is likely to reinforce his approach at the plate whuch hasn’t been working very well lately.

He came back to close out 2007 strong
A season in which he took the same first-half pattern in as he has this year, as you alluded to. Up until recently, that was Kinsler’s only truly bad first half.
He’s definitely mired in a deep slump right now, and his overall numbers are propped up by his first three weeks, but I think he’s a good enough player that he can be expected to bounce back as he did in ’07.
Get on base or die, Salty.

2008 was his career year.
I predicted that before this season even started. But he’s still been the most valuable player on this team in terms of WAR. He’s been roughly twice as valuable as MY.
Although Young is still fourth on the team and somehow the most valuable offensive player overall this year, his shitty defense comes close to canceling out the offensive value – by comparison Elvis has actually been worth just hair more than MY overall.
As far as talent goes, I’d say Kinsler is still tops as far as both defensive, offensive and baserunning skills go over Hamilton and Young. Thanks to Elvis and Cruz, I’d probably say MY is a distant 5th on this team in terms of raw talent, although that’s just a subjective assessment by me.

If you think he doesn’t deserve to be on the All Star team, fine. But if you honestly think he doesn’t deserve to start on the Rangers, I’m not sure what you’re smoking.
Did you ever think that maybe this is just a good opportunity for the Youngs and Kinslers to continue building good will and connections with the hardcore fans? I think it’s pretty cool.

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

Kinsler, the Rangers’ second baseman, is followed closely in the AL race by third baseman Brandon Inge of the Tigers, third baseman Chone Figgins of the Angels, first baseman Carlos Pena of the Rays and designated hitter Adam Lind of the Blue Jays. Inge took over the lead Monday night, but Kinsler regained it this morning. Pena and Lind flip-flopped from the previous day’s update.

There also has been an alliance among many Giants and Rangers fans on Twitter to keep their guys in the lead. That was only part of the Twitter impact that — not surprisingly — has been felt in this year’s Final Vote campaigning. The twitpic of Uncle Sam with a “Vote Sandoval” message has been re-tweeted over and over to the nth degree. There was Doug Mientkiewicz, tweeting during rehab as @Dougiebaseball on behalf of Kemp, his teammate.
