Shon Landry
Crazy story with that guy…
I wonder if he’s fixed for any sports, or if that’s just a catastrophic baseball injury? Good grief.

I need to get a new story up tonight
so the Landry draft Q&A is off the front page :)
I asked someone around the McNeese program and they heard he’d retired and gone back to Lake Charles, but they didn’t know why. Real odd. I’m going to ask around and see if I can find anything out.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

Gooch Onyewu was sold to AC Milan today.

Think this is good for him?
I fear that he’ll just sit on the bench in their primary competitions.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 7, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
AC Milan has lost some talent i believe and they acquired him because of his performance against Brazil and Spain. Reports are saying he is going to get a chance to play. Only time will tell. I love American soccer but the one thing we really lack is an American player (besides goalie) becoming a real force overseas.
by Michael Cave on Jul 7, 2009 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hate this move.
I know AC Milan and Liege have a strong relationship, but I don’t understand the transfer at all.
He might see some time in the Copa Italia but that’s it. They bought Senderos, who’s the same type of player but with more experience, and he barely got any PT last year even with Nesta out. Milan’s not exactly the most patient team with young raw players (see Gourcuff, Yohan), so I’m not sure what he has to gain here. He’ll hopefully learn more about the fundamentals of defending like positioning, but there’s going to be a huge language barrier there.
I really think he’d have been better off going to a lower tier Prem club or maybe even Germany.
by LiamP on Jul 7, 2009 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe Senderos will go
From the Arsenal perspective my impression was that Milan wasn’t in love with him last season.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 7, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope he does
I became a fan of Senderos after watching the Swiss play in the World Cup in 06, amd I was excited to see him join AC Milan. But in their games in which I’ve seen him play (usually off the bench), he just doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. Gooch brings more energy, and that’s what I want in a center back off the bench.
by naropean on Jul 7, 2009 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I felt like I held my breath

Some AZL Rangers off to a quick start:
2B 07/07/91 Alex Gonzalez .333 BA .400 OBP (SSS its over 18 AB’s and only 1 hit is more than a single, but he’s also one of the youngest kids on the team)
C 06/18/1991 Tomas Telis .304 BA .308 OBP but also the 2nd youngest hitter on the club
P 03/04/1990 Juan Grullon is a 1990 birthday and has done well with a sub 2.00 era in 2 games King 7 and BB 4
P 04/22/1992 Edwin Jose Escobar 1.13 era 10k’s in 8 IP
P 08/14/1992 Richard Alvarez is also worth keeping an eye on as he is young as hell as well sporting the youngest birthday but none of these guys have pitched more than 2 times so no need in freaking out, but interesting to keep an eye on’m.
all of them are babies, we’re getting more of these youngn’s compared to the past at the AZL level and all of them are venezuelan. the venezuelan connection is in full effect

Garner mentioned on the radio that Whittleman had recently switched to a lighter bat to generate more bat speed. I’m not sure, but it sounds like this might be the reason for his recent tear.

I wouldn’t cry one tear. I don’t think he gets taken, don’t see why a team would want a low avg. streaky power guy with no glove on their bench taking up a roster spot.

Can any of you who have seen Kirkman rank his stuff relative to Beavan, Kiker, Poveda, and Moscoso?
by spurdynasty on Jul 7, 2009 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've seen each of those guys once, and I'm not really qualified
but my impression of his stuff was that it was solid and well rounded, and his command was generally good. His FB seemed to have as much or more juice than any of those first three, and I thought he did a good job moving it around and hitting the glove consistently. Secondary stuff wasn’t overwhelming, but not underdeveloped either. Solid or better all the way around.
Like the rest of that group, he has some developmental steps yet to take, but I think the ingredients are there for a ML starter.
I know that isn’t much to go on, but until someone more qualified steps in…
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
by tricer on Jul 8, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just on stuff...
I’d put them in this order: Poveda, Moscoso, Kiker, and then a coin flip for Beavan and Kirkman.
If Kirkman actually starts throwing his curveball well (he’s been good with a slider), he’d jump ahead of Beavan. Depending on how good it is, he could pass Kiker.
I’m tired of seeing Kiker at 86-89 with his fastball, mostly because he pops 93-94 a couple of times per start. It’s unimpressive but pretty functional. It will be interesting to see where his velocity is when he hits AAA.
by NoNameOnCard on Jul 8, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to say
none of them get me terribly excited at this point, in terms of their stuff. As Trip said, Kiker flashes it, but he’s not consistent with it. Probably a little spoiled by some good arms above and below this group on the ladder, but short of a serious development these guys aren’t going to be carried by pure stuff.
by Brett Perryman on Jul 8, 2009 2:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
On Poveda and Moscoso...
They have the stuff. The two of them are on a different tier than the other 3.
