OT: So what's your favorite, eh?
So I was thinking about my favorite GOOD movies. You know we all have our guilty pleasures that we enjoy watching more than films we may like and think are important culturally, so I had to cut out such greats as Gross Point Blank and
The Hudsucker Proxy (both of which I think are brilliant but probably not examples of great film making).
Following is a poll with a list of some of my favorite good movies, and I was wondering which of them the community liked best. Hope that a good discussion follows, too. I have included an "all of these suck" option for those of you with no taste whatsoever. Anyway, they're in no particular order.

I will stop and watch
almost any Hitchcock movie, North by Northwest is my favorite, but I also love Rear Window and Vertigo.

I think I probably do like NxNW better but I guess I didn’t think of it. The Birds is also terrific. Hitchcock was awesome.

Can't go wrong w/ Hitchcock.
I really like 1 scene movies, so I’d probably go w/ Rope and Lifeboat.

Jump on that
Both are fantastic films. Plus it’s incredibly difficult to pick between Ingrid Bergman or Eva Marie Saint as my favorite female lead in a Hitchcock film.
I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.
Don't forget Grace Kelly.
‘Dial M for Murder’ & ‘Rear Window’. Stunning woman.

Shadow of a Doubt is mine, as well
Shadow beats those other 2, as well. Northwest by a nose, Notorious by a mile.
Rope is another little underheralded dandy.
Most overrated Hitch: Vertigo.

I enjoyed it, but it does not stack up to those listed above. There are a lot of films made recently that I think will stand the test of time and be right up there on that list. Pulp Fiction is probably the strongest example but there are others.

Honestly, I think Pulp Fiction has aged kind of badly
LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1
I'm not sure what has aged about it.
It had a huge impact and maybe some are tired of it, but I’m sure that happened with other great films 10 to 15 years out.
by Black Francis on Jul 8, 2009 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions
The things that seemed so fresh and real about it have faded...
Perhaps it’s because it’s been done more, but also because it’s been done better… and the negative things, which are generally negative about Tarantino’s work in general, seem to stand out a lot more than they did 15 years ago.
Personally, my favorite QT is Jackie Brown, because it’s the closest thing he’s come to evolving as a filmmaker… of course, it was poorly received and so he went back into his comfort zone… but at least we have Jackie.
LOL Sorry the Sooners will score more that 14. - boomer1
I'm not sure about that.

Reading about how the studio cut the movie to 2 hours, and put it in chronological order makes me sad, if only because Sergio went to his grave thinking that no one would ever see his cut of the movie.
It’s better than Godfather, for my money. And I love the first 2 quite a bit.

I think most of the movies on that list are over-adulated, though obviously none are bad.

I think that’s a good collection of movies that a lot of people would call their favorites, so it’s a fine list.
Apocalypse Now is the closest thing to a bad movie on the list, and I truthfully did not enjoy it at all, but I realize a lot of others do.

Coen Bros stuff, that is.
I think Apocalypse Now is a very interesting adaptation. Certainly a stretch, but for a long time I thought it was the best I’d ever seen. Opinions vary. I think you can watch it several different ways…it can either be pretty complex or just an odd war movie at its most basic.

The difference between City Of God and say, The Dark Knight, is that the characters in the former have personality.
Even Li’l Ze, was a likeable character. The guy is one of the most ruthless villans I’ve ever seen, but at least he’s human enough to crack a good joke.

Apocalypse Now
From the list that was provided, that’s what I picked.
My all-time favorite movie- and one that I think was fairly influential, though not necessarily a critical or commercial success at the time of its release- is Blade Runner.
Hard to go wrong with most of Kubrick’s films, either. I’m partial to A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket for sheer entertainment value, though 2001, Spartacus, and Dr. Strangelove were probably all better films.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
I loooove Blade Runner
The ending monologue with Rutger Hauer is greatness and the basic explanation for why he was doing what he was.
I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tan Hauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time. To die.
I also really like The Mission. Thought that was a beautiful movie (and not too new; 23 years old). Should have won best picture.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

Blade Runner, despite being totally badass, has found a way to be underrated in the mainstream.

Lots of Smartasses.
At this moment 12 percent of you think all those movies in the poll suck it, and I know that’s not really the case. I probably shouldn’t have included a sarcasm selection.

Double Indemnity
Sunset Blvd.
Rashomon
The Seven Samurai
Ran
Citizen Kane
Annie Hall
Singin’ in the Rain
Taxi Driver
The Last Temptation of Christ
Goodfellas(unless I missed it, no Marty at all on the list… hmm.)
Then there are the recent films(last 15 years or so), many of which I feel have stood the test of time already, like…
United 93
The Shawshank Redemption
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Requiem for a Dream
Schindler’s List

…is probably one of my favorite directors, ironically. I probably should have included Raging Bull, at least. But again the list wasn’t for new stuff and I didn’t go for foreign films.
I like your selection of newer ones but am puzzled by United 93. People will hate me but I’d add Lost in Translation to that nad maybe Gangs of New York, which I really like but most people didn’t seem to. Lost in Translation I’d have on that list, too. Probably would be unpopular.
Singin’ in the Rain is good but I have trouble tolerating even the best of musicals. Taxi Driver is one of my all time favorites.
Obviously I missed some of my own favorites with the old stuff. Citizen Kane, Giant, To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men, and a bunch of others. I came up with that poll really quickly and felt it was getting too long.
I’d like to know who chose Last Picture Show. Not enough people have seen that in my opinion. Very good movie.
by Black Francis on Jul 8, 2009 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions
Why puzzled?
It’s not like I’m suggesting Transformers 2 or anything, it’s a very well regarded film (that was robbed from Oscar nominations because several in the Academy went on record about refusing to watch it due to subject matter) that affected me, on a visceral, emotional level, more than any film I’ve seen as an adult.
And regarding Last Picture Show… I’ve had it sitting on my DVR for months. I should finally give it a go in the next week or so.

Last Picture Show
That movie got me hooked on Hank Williams. I considered voting for it, but I couldn’t justify it being higher than 4th on that list for me.
Raging Bull
is a case of a movie I’d heard so much about that really underwhelmed me. Maybe it’s that I grew up in an era where boxing really was an outcast sport (although I’ve watched many of Ali’s fights on ESPN classic and truly love that boxing), and it’s just never been a part of my culture.
I guess it’s also that I’ve seen a lot of stories about famous people who were really screwed up assholes in their private lives, and I’m kinda jaded towards celebrities necessarily being awesome because they’re good at sports, acting, singing, or what have you.

You're a bastard, BFrancis
Cool Hand Luke is in my top two or three movies of all-time, and I’ve always been a big fan of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Yet then you put The Godfather on here, which, of course, is the correct answer.
If you had put Blade Runner on here, and made me diss the triumvirate of Luke, Blondie and Deckard, I might have found a way to punch you in the head.

Oh and...
….I’ve (gulp) never seen Dr. Strangelove. Commence scorn.
"I love winning." - rockin_rangers, on May 16, 2009
Strangelove
I appreciate it, I respect it as filmmaking, but it’s never done much for me, and I in fact prefer Fail-Safe, which came out at the same time, with a strikingly similar plotline, only with a more serious point of view. Henry Fonda is excellent in it.

Don't feel too bad
I have not seen any of the movies included in the poll.

You haven't seen any of them?
I recommend taking a month off baseball and getting a Netflix subscription. BF has provided you a nice movie queue right there – no thinking involved.
Go Rice Owls!
Absolupely.
Start with the Godfather movies, then Cool Hand Luke.
Then, when you’re done with all of the movies, watch Blade Runner, and remember that it was made in 19-FREAKIN’-82. It will change your life.

Apocalypse Now
I wonder if children of VietNam vets view the Nam movie genre (Apocalypse, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Bat 21, Hamburger Hill, etc) a bit differently than the younger generation. I absolutely love Apocalypse Now and when I saw the Redux I loved it all over again. There are so many sub-plots that deserve further fleshing out that while the movie lasts a long time, your imagination has a hard time keeping up.
I’ve spoken to a few of the young 20’s generation and VietNam doesn’t really register with them. They know it happened, but it’s a footnote in history. So I wonder if the movies don’t hit them as hard as myself and others of my generation.
To continue on with more recent war movies, BlackHawk Down and Three Kings are very enjoyable to me, but never can touch Apocalypse Now
What's the rumpus?
I think you could say that about
any generation and almost any movie. Movies are a product of their time; some date better than others, but every aspect of the movie will be dripping with the mores and styles of its own period. Even a period piece will look at the historical period through the eyes of the present.

Thanks for getting us talking about GOOD movies BF
2001 a Space Oddessy came out in 1968 and still looks better than most space movies 41 years later.
Apocalypse Now never worked for me. Visually striking for sure, and some great macho-dude lines, like ‘Napalm in the morning.’ But the whole Heart Of Darkness in Vietnam thing doesn’t work for me. Heart of Darkness is about the darkness within us and that theme is muddled in Apocalypse Now by the what-war-does-to-us theme. For me, there are so many truer and clearer (and much less self-indulgent) depictions of war, Paths Of Glory, Deerhunter, Full Metal Jacket, Three Kings, Gallipoli, Dirty Dozen, Das Boot, Saving Private Ryan…Band of Brothers even.
Almost put the Graduate
Definitely the movie with the most personal resonance (minus the whole Anne Bancroft thing). But the Godfather movies, especially II, are just stellar and definitely have more “watchability”.
Go Rice Owls!
I'll take Raising Arizona over The Hudsucker Proxy any day

The line that always tickles me-
Evelle: [about the balloons he just bought] These blow up into funny shapes and all?
Grocer: Well no… unless round is funny.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
This is going to be an unpopular opinion
But I think the Coens bros. don’t make very good comedies. Which is puzzling to me, b/c most of their good dramatic films are also very, very funny.
The only one I thought was really humorous was Lebowski, but even then I am baffled by the cult popularity of it. O Brother, Intolerable Cruelty, Burn after Reading, ladykillers, all awkardly not that funny to me. Raising AZ was good, but not memorably so, where I’d stop and watch it again if it was on.
Yet Fargo, Miller’s Crossing, Blood Simple, No Country, and to a lesser extent The Man Who Wasn’t There all have a wicked streak of wit to them.
I guess lots of peeps like screwball type comedies. I just wish the Coens didn’t seem to fell that was the only way to go.

I'm curious of your comedy choices,
because I enjoy your movie insight. I personally have never laughed at the current Apatow, Ferrell, Sandler, Black stuff.
I found Raising Arizona and O Brother really funny because of the dialogue. Same goes for the Levinson triad of Diner, Tin Man, and Liberty Heights.
Silly can get me as well, notably The Jerk and Sixteen Candles.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
Diner and especially Tin Man are great examples of the type of comedy I love
That salesman that had the Bonanza preoccupation in TM is seared into my comedy brain. Gold. Levinson rocks (Lib heights was good, too).
If you haven’t seen Freaks and Geeks, the shortlived TV com that started it all for Apatow, I’d highly recommend it. Wife and I discovered it on DVD, and it is an all time TV fave for both of us. Launched the careers of James Franco, Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini, and Jason Segel, and also had the good taste to cast the sadly under-utilized Joe Flaherty as the dad (SCTV was awesome).
And I loved Knocked Up, 40 YO Virgin, and Super Bad, most others not a lot. Apatow is kind of a tough one to rate b/c he has such varying degrees of influence, sometimes just producing, sometimes directing, and writing some as well. I agree he has produced many cornpone lemons, but he directed Knocked and Virgin, and those are pretty much a riot to me.
I generally don’t dig silly, and I h-a-t-e spoofs and parodies, Airplane being the lone exception
One auteur no one has mentioned is Woody. I heart that motherfucker like a motherfucker. Dustin loses points for the absence of Hannah and her Sisters, Annie Hall, Manhattan, or at least one of the dozen grade A movies he’s helmed over the years. Broadway Danny Rose is a movie that I will never change the channel on, as is Take the Money and Run (they take a vote on who they would prefer to be robbed by, and he loses!), Crimes and Misdemeanors, and, more recently, Match Point.

Ah yes, always forget about Woody
Haven’t seen many, but I really enjoyed Annie Hall, and the “What happens during ejaculation” bit in Everything….Sex, But..Ask kills me.
I’ve heard many good things about Freaks and Geeks. As a fan of the Wonder Years, is there any similarity? Writing, no laugh track, laugh and cry in the same episode…
Of course- Airplane! Can’t believe I forgot the most quotable movie ever.

Wonder Years
Yes and no. It is edgier, and less idealized. It is also a good deal funnier (and I enjoyed WY a good deal).
Perhaps b/c I’m old enough to remember 1981 clearly, but not 1968 at all, it seems more realistic, too. But all the descriptions you used above fit.
I’d be shocked if you didn’t love it.

And Match Point was oddly captivating (well, it was Scarlett Johannsen – nothing odd about that)

Here’s a great read by Terry Southern about the making of Strangelove.
Really long – bookmark it and drag out on a rainy day.
Movies I'd include:

Goodfellas
Fargo
Citizen Kane
Amadeus
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
Taxi Driver
A Clockwork Orange
Pulp Fiction

Tough call
I’m going to be incredibly generic and go with the Godfather pair. Might have been difficult if you went with Rear Window or NxNW for the Hitchcock pick.
One flick I’m surprised no one has mentioned: Casablanca. One of my personal favorites.
One of my personal favorites is The Big Lebowski but I can see why you left it off, heh.
I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.
Casablanca is a great movie
I generally think that many old (pre-1960) movies are often overrated or highly regarded because of what they meant to movies in general but aren’t “timeless” in that they’d be a great movie if released “as is” today. I think Casablanca is the best exception to that – I don’t see how that exact movie released today wouldn’t be the best movie of 2009. Yeah, Bogart’s lines are cliche, but they are cliche because of the movie. When you consider its timeliness to the era (a WWII movie that came out during WWII), it’s an amazing film.
Gone with the Wind is another in this vein, though it could probably never be released as it is now.
Go Rice Owls!
I have a rule....
I don’t watch movies made before 1965. The only exception is Hitchcock which I explain away as he was far ahead of his time.
There may be a couple of exceptions to my rule but overall it’s a good cutoff point.
Feel free to destroy my theory.
You're just missing out on some truly great films.
But if you feel like shutting yourself off in a little bottle, more power to you, I guess.

for Casablanca.

That is nuts.
A lot of awesome movies made before then. That’s just as dumb as not watching any movies made after 1965 would be.
