Because Dustin Nippert is just so awesome, he bumped him from the roto today before even making a start.

Between Salty last year, and Borbon and Dutch this year

I’m becoming less and less enchanted with how this organization is handling some of their young players lately. Yeah, they hit the jackpot with their gamble on Andrus and where extremely patient with Davis, but Dutch and Borbon where both called up way too soon and have gotten largely screwed in the way they where handled afterward.

Well, he gets the blame for what happens after they've been called up

But at some point, you have to lay some of it at the feet of whoever it was who thought it was a good idea to call them up and put them at his mercy in the first place.

Probably not

But it was still a pretty stupid promotion if it didn’t come with the express intention that he start in center field. They called him up just to call him up, without the intention of removing Marlon Byrd from CF or any other sort of a plan in place for how he was to be used. Ultimately they did not need him, and it turned into an utterly pointless FUBAR callup.

Same thing with Holland, really: they called him up out of panic when the bullpen looked like shit in April, and they haven’t been able to formulate a clear-cut plan as to how he’s supposed to be used since. And Salty, last year: they don’t hesitate to call him up when their 50 year old backup catcher gets hurt, yet they don’t want to commit to removing Laird from the starting catchers throne. So they throw him into a fucked up platoon that eventually turns into a backup role.

This organization is developing quite a penchant for prematurely calling up young guys before they’re ready to commit to them in their respective roles. They’ve got to either leave these guys in the minors until they’re 100% ready, or make it explicitly clear that they’re committing to playing them when they’re called up. Not doing so just gives Wash an extra player that he either doesn’t know what to do with or doesn’t want to use, which leads to the fucked up usage or plain non-usage.

Get on base or die, Salty.

That's my take.

Give the other GMs a chance to look at Nippert before the wheeling and dealing gets started at the All Star game. JD should be able to get a read on the interest level in Dustin, and it’s always more profitable to trade a starter than a long reliever.

I don't know how much editorializing is present

in some of these short columns on the topic, but most of them seem to suggest that it’s the plan moving forward unless something changes (which I assume means Nippert doing badly for one thing).

Yes

Holland looked excellent in those 2 innings of work…might be the best ive see him pitch to be honest

by Horns130 on Jul 8, 2009 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Its getting tough

to buy into this organizations philosophy of rushing prospects, only to have them collect dust in the majors.

Maybe its worth holding them an extra year in the minors, and work on things like secondary pitches and plate discipline and fielding.

problem is he isn't taking walks

he’s up there SUPER aggressive…and he’s still hitting balls pretty hard, just right at people – or BARELY missing a home run or double by pulling the shit out of it.

I will say he didn’t do his job as a leadoff man while Hamilton was out, but maybe now that he’s back he will settle down and allow the game to flow a bit more instead of jumping out and attacking?

In the 5th, a run scored on a wild pitch while Salty was at bat. Then two scored on his single. Why was he only credited with one RBI? Does no one get an RBI for a wild pitch?

“Derek Holland, with some huge help from Jason Jennings and C.J. Wilson late in the game, picked up the victory in relief of starter Dustin Nippert, who allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings.”

Woo, thanks jason

Heh.

Get on base or die, Salty.

This was nice to wake up to.

I crashed after the 6th inning.

no talk about the FX2 jack?

I still think he is questionable. Looking a touch better but he can’t keep giving up dingers. CJ’s 1.2 innings of Hold were crucial, especially with 2 RISP inherited in the 7th with 1 out. CJ is getting so automatic that no one posts about it anymore

meh

struck out the first two guys including a 3 pitch K. juan rivera is on fire and frankie knew he had 4 runs to work with. doesnt bother me.

the preceding post was a great success.

This

Rivera hit the homer last week as well…he is seeing the ball well and perhaps FX2 just pitches well for him…it happens

id just keep it in the back of my mind if i were the rangers and be careful with him if frankie faces him in a key situation again

people hate CJ

they keep quiet when he’s doing well. I love the guy, always have, and always said that when he’s healthy he’s a HUGE weapon. But what do I know?

Major props to Young

for legging out that infield hit to start that rally. I love it when innings like that happen to teams I hate.

that was pretty awesome

Face. Doing it.

That inning reminded me of our softball game on Monday night – we were up by a few, going into the 4th inning, and had 2 outs having only given up 3 runs. We thought we had the 3rd out, but the ump called him safe at first, and they put 13 more on the board. We lost by 7.

Well compared to how I felt after game one

to now … night/day

I think we get mediocre Padilla tonight but we beat the shit outta Santana to get the W.

by texasraider on Jul 8, 2009 7:58 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe someone can explain to me

Why moving Holland to the Bullpen for Dustin Nippert is a good thing.

I could understand it if we were putting someone in the rotation who was, you know, good, or even mediocre with the potential to burn innings. I’d rather keep Holland in the rotation, and just tell him he is not allowed to shake off anything Teagarden puts up as a sign.

by DJCahill on Jul 8, 2009 8:16 AM CDT reply actions

Amen

I understand that they think Holland is poised enough to handle whatever they put him through, but this is going a bit too far. And for Nippert? Nippert should be in AA or AAA waiting for an injury emergency or something. I do not see how you trust Nippert over Holland to start against LAA and SEA when you’re battling for first place.

Nippert

has put up a major league record that is absolutely unblemished by any hint of success, and he is over Thad Levine’s magic 100 IP.

Good call

on not shaking off Teagarden. I love watching the interaction of the pitcher and catcher in regards to game calling. Admittedly, im a nerd and chart pitches sometime. I definitely recommend it. Really can open your eyes to the nuances of the game.

I love how Salty has progressed defensively but he still needs to work a pitcher a little more. I think Teagarden is excellent at handling pitchers.

by Michael Cave on Jul 8, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think that

right now I’d rather see younger pitchers with Teagarden. If Salty was bashing the ball, it would be a tougher call, but right now, you don’t give up all that much with teagarden catching.

why then take him out when is absolutely mowing the Angels down?

especially when

he has been stretched out to starters innings.

Yeah, Wash has thrown this kid into bases-loaded situations twice (or has it been three times?) out of the 'pen this year

But god forbid he should face Mike Napoli when there 2 outs, a 3 run lead and he’s flashing the best stuff he’s had all fucking season.

only thing i can think of:

limits his innings?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

How many innings do they want to limit him to?

We’re halfway through the season. If Holland starts 16 games in the second half and goes 6 innings per start he’ll finish the season with 153 innings, which is right around what he threw in the minors last year.

Limiting his innings shouldn’t be an issue at this point.

Get on base or die, Salty.

How bad will Jones/Blalock have to be

to drop out of the cleanup spot?

Since April, Jones has an OBP around .270 while hitting a cool .211
Since April, Blalock has an OBP around .275 while hitting a cool .240

I know they have hit for some power but c’mon.

I have no idea

why Kinsler and Hamilton aren’t 3 and 4, and you can swap which one is 3.

The problem is

it’s difficult to score a ton of runs when you have two guys who rarely get on base bogging down the middle of the order.

Meh

Hank has been much better the last week or so and even flashing patience (at times) so im going to give him another chance

Andruw Jones on the other hand….well….fuck andruw jones

isnt he supposed to be our LHP DH?

didn't he break Lackey?

doesn’t that count for something?
