well

if you can trade damp for something better now, do it. don’t hold on and HOPE you can move him in the future.

i think it would be good to have damp and gortet on the team, but gortet ain’t on the team…yet. not sure how damp feels about being a bench player long term.

i think you get more value for him next summer

particularly with the salary cap being projected to come down.

If you trade him right now to Atlanta,

1. you have to trust that you can extend Joe Johnson next summer.
2. Atlanta has to have a year of Dampier rather than Joe Johnson when they know full-well that the Mavericks would trade Dampier for Joe Johnson next summer. Why not just wait and keep selling tickets rather than piss off your fan base?

Well his contract is more valuable next year

Because the team acquiring him can cut him for zero money. If they acquire him right now, that team is on the hook for his crazy salary this season which nobody wants to take on.

this scenario unfolding

would make criticism of not re-signing Nash and signing Dampier look fairly foolish since it’s entirely conceivable that Dampier’s contract will be the distinct reason that a player like Joe Johnson or Chris Bosh could be acquired when the Mavs are still well over the cap.
