I know it doesn't matter
but I’d rather the Rangers be listed above Boston. We have beat them head to head. Either way, this weekend could go a long way for us in deciding our playoff chances against Boston, and if anything we gain even more confidence coming down to the final month and a half of the season.
We’re about to get Nelly and Kinsler back, and Hamilton is starting to hit. This thing could be on the upswing!
Go Rangers! Watch for a waiver wire gem.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think it is done alphabetically
Head-to-head is irrelevant for purposes of standings.

Head to head isn't a tie breaker for the Wild Card?

We would host play-off, right now. Not coin flip

It's a coin flip
In early September, there is a series of coin flips based on all the possibilities (for both division and wild card one-game playoff games).

Wow
Didn’t realize that Boston had lost 6 straight (4 to the Yanks I knew). Texas had only gone 3-3 in their last 6.
I didn't know what a mancrush was. Derek Holland showed me.
I still want the division
God, I want to kick the Angels out of the playoffs so much.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
amen
i don’t want Boston or Detroit in the playoffs either

i dont
want another 1st round playoff series with the yankees!!!!!

I want that.
And I want to be up by 1 in game 5 in the bottom of the 9th, for Jeter to get to second, and for Feliz to come in and get the last two outs by striking out A-Rod and Tex.
Feliz striking out Tex to end the series would probably be the best moment in my life.

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who has had
these thoughts….the only difference is that I wanted Elvis to hit a slow roller (in the 9th inning of the deciding game) to A-Rod who bobbles the ball but makes the throw to Tex…he drops the throw allowing the runner on 3B to score the winning run…then Feliz could strike out A-Rod and Tex…

how 'bout Feliz throws 101mph to Tex, who foul tips it off the plate with enough english
that it skips right back into his grapes. He then keels over and vomits from the pain

If the Rangers don't pull this out...
It’s looking like it could be an AL playoff field of BOS @ LAA/ DET @ NYY.
I can’t think of anything worse.

Easy there on the Angels.
The MF Yankees are the bitch of the LAAAAAA Angels and I wouldn’t mind them doing some dirty work for us before the ALCS.

so, who would you guys prefer to play in the playoffs if given the choice?
Detroit – who has owned us
New York – probably the best team
Boston – slumping now, but definitely a good team
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
Yup
I want the Rangers to beat them till they fart blood.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Detroit, no question.
Verlander, Becket, CiCi are all incredibly tough, but I think NYY and Boston go deeper in terms of blowput arms in the rotation, plus the back end of their pens scare me, whereas Detroit’s has me licking my handsome model-esque chops.
The AL East teams (gotta include TB in this, btw) are the class of MLB, imo.
Any chance to NOT face them and you’ve gotta take it, no matter what Detroit did to us early in the season.

I don't think it matters.
J.P. can take Roy Halladay and shove him up his ass. I’ll take Derek Holland. - AJM
Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
I just can't get over
the Rangers having the lowest runs allowed in the AL.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
They have the third lowest ERA. What's that old joke...
If the Rangers had a league average pitching staff….
Oh, wait, Rangers’ FIP is 4th from the bottom. So, it ain’t the pitching. But, FIP is flawed, so you all are dumb. The Rangers need an Ace. Holland is their Ace.
I admit my brain is scrambled by the fact the Rangers have given up the fewest runs in the AL.

Just about every stat is flawed.
Some just much less than others. Not sure if that was a joke, though.
So what does it mean when Feliz has a - 1.94 FIP
like he had last week after his first outing v Oak?

does it literally mean he was taking runs away from the A’s?

No.
FIP is scaled for a league-specific factor, and with Feliz, it came out looking that way because, well, the rest of the league does not avoid walks or home runs while throwing strike outs at that rate. It’s a statistical anomoly and one to be marveled at but given no useful weight.
So I guess FIP
has some of the same issues Game Scores have.
Some LSBers like to knock Game Scores and cite Lackey’s start in May that lasted only two pitches.

Yes, it has the issue of small sample size wonkiness.
This is something they have in common with every stat, especially those devised to give you a more accurate and thorough picture of events.
Thought so.
Gracias for your explanation.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."

All stats have SSS issues.
I like FIP as a generalized indicator in certain cases, but it definately has weaknesses to it.
I prefer tRA for comparison purposes because it actually looks at batted ball types.
Both of these stats have significant issues with them — not all ground balls are created equal..
Game Scores are interesting for a retrospective look IMO but do not provide a particularly strong forward-looking perspective due to it’s construction.
Part of every starting pitcher's job
is to not F up a game, especially in the early innings and I think that is what Game Scores help define (although that’s not all GS do). So many of the Ranger problems the last few years have come because the team was down 6-1 in the 3rd inning.
Lackey had something like a 46 Game Score when he was tossed from that game in May.
I think it can be argued that Lackey didn’t do much personally to F up that game other than tax the LAAA bully (which was a terrible thing to do) but as far as his actual performance goes, he didn’t do much to hurt the Angels that day and his Game Score reflects that.
I’m not knocking FIP but I think it’s something that should be used as a part of the blend of info and not all encompassing.

all stats should be used
in context. But the FIP bashing around here is silly, no one around here is trumpeting FIP as the one true stat and as something to be used without looking at anything else. Every time someone brings up FIP now, several folks jump in to bash it as if that were the case.
The game score bashing is a bit overdone, too.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
FIP is kind of like OPS to me
its easy to find and easy to understand and a pretty good representation of how well a pitcher has pitched, but it doesnt tell you more than just a surface level value of a guy. I’ll probably always use it simply b.c its easy enouh to understand
Partially agree
FIP needs to be incorporated with other stats to be really meaningful, but it gives some insight into how a pitcher performs over-time and can be compared easily with ERA and tRA to see generally how much the pitcher has benefitted from defense and from luck.
Game Scores give you the info on how a pitcher did in any given game, but the average Game Score over a series of games does not give as much information toward future performance as each score is based on a relatively small sample size (<= 9 IP).
What this gives you is a more variable statistic that does not converge well with additional time, giving you relatively-weaker predictive ability going forward. On the other hand, a pitcher’s FIP or tRA for any given game is not particularly informative (see: Feliz’s first game) from a realistic standpoint.
His FIP was negative because FIP is normalized to ERA based on generalized values of K’s (reduces FIP), BB’s (increases FIP), and HR’s (increases FIP).
Having a perfect 100% K rate is an extreme outlier that “breaks” FIP, because that would result in a 0.00 ERA, therefore the FIP should theoretically be 0.00, but the “fit” does not predict that due to the extremeness of the situation and the resultant linear weights being applied.
Game Score is designed for a retrospective look at how well a pitcher performed in any given game, so it is more friendly toward this small-sample size quandry. It was set up as an expansion on the “Quality Start” statistic to be more informative.
For any given game, pulling the Game Score will give you a general indicator for how that pitcher pitched, but it fails to take into detailed account how much of the pitcher’s success was luck or defense.
As such, pulling the average Game Scores for a season with IP totals is simply not as informational to future production as FIP or tRA + IP totals.
Well, his ERA+ is only 234. Greinke's was at 1179 earlier this year.

He's going to break up a Holland no-hit bid in the ninth
thats just the way his year is going against our pitchers
I agree.
Just trying to get across the point that the Rangers’ world is upside down and it’s hard to get a bearing on what will happen going foward.

I just noticed this.
But we’re actually ahead of the Angels by 3rd order record. Don’t know why I’m surprised, because that does, in fact, sound like the Angels.
Only 5th in the league, though.

People
have an absolutely irrational hatred of Andruw Jones. They will make moves where they trade away significant prospects to get a downgrade at the position.
