New T.R. Sullivan mailbag up
T.R. Sullivan has a new mailbag up...
Among other things, there is a question from a fan who thinks Scott Feldman is an ace, Sullivan seemingly disagreeing a bit pointedly with the decision to cut Vicente Padilla loose, and some opining about how the Rangers won't be able to win games by hitting homers in September and the playoffs (apparently, players scoring on homers hit after Labor Day only count for a half-run, I guess).
Anyway, check it out...

It seems that rarely does a Rangers game show up anymore on my27, which is frustrating seeing as how I don’t have access to FSN Southwest. Can you explain why games just don’t seem to be broadcast on my27 anymore?
— Sonny T. Bedford, Texas
That is determined by FOX, not the Rangers. They decided they wanted 25 games on my27 and the rest on cable. Most of the my27 games were shown early in the season.
This is the exact same thing they did with the Stars. Its not like theyre showing anything great on KDFI in the evening time slots anyways. You want interest generated? At least show more than an 1/8th of the games on KDFI, where way more people could get it. I wish we could get the Rangers and Stars like the Mavs where about half the games were on KXA.

im not sure where in west texas you live
but the my27 games are usually broadcast on mylubbock here in lubbock, also if you have directv, dish network, or uverse the game is almost always broadcast on an alternate FSN channel.

Yep, and we get the My27 games on either an FSN Alternate on DirecTV

Same..somewhat.
It’s on an alternate digital channel, and I only have that in the living room. I prefer to watch games in my room by the computer..so when they’re on my27 I cannot maximize my enjoyment and makes me =\
But atleast I get to see them now, opposed to the beginning of the season. I’m all for every game being on FSN though.

I wonder how many of the games are going to be on 21 next year versus what’s been on 27 this year?

I didn't read that as disagreeing...
…with the move to cut Padilla. Just stressing that it’s a bigger loss (of Padilla’s doing) than many want to believe. (Not that I agree with that, fwiw.)

Sadly, for all his talent
he was a 4.9 ERA pitcher here. I think there is a good chance we get that out of Nippert, or whoever his replacement is with this defense.

I think Nippert offers you the same thing as Padilla:
Potentially game-winning stuff, but uncertainty about consistent results. Neither are ideal for a playoff race. You’re paying Padilla whether he plays or not – why not release him? I’m all for it.
Go Nipples and go Rangers!

Playoff pitching
With Padilla gone now that leaves 1 guy from the opening day rotation still there. Not bad for a team competing for the playoffs. However, who is in the playoff rotation should the Rangers be fortunate enough to make it? Clearly, Millwood would be but who else? You have 2 rookies, a journeyman, and Feldman from across the hall.

Don't you think it's a little early to determine this?
Nippert or Mathis or someone else could get incredibly hot in August and September. I would hold off on this until the week before the Rangers start the playoffs this year.
by Mark from OC on Aug 10, 2009 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not really
Nippert could put it together, I guess, he’s got the stuff to, and could force his way in as the #4 starter. Or one of the first three could get hurt or fall apart.
Although the chances of Mathis getting so hot he’d be one of your top three starters in the playoffs is a probability on par with miles getting to hook up with Kari Byron.

Feldman an ace?
Really Dallas P.? Really TR?
by behindthebag on Aug 10, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Feldman can be an ace if all of the following events occur
1) He gains 2-3 mph on his fastball
2) He commands all of his pitches better, especially the curveball
3) He learns a above-average changeup
4) He grows a manly beard like Casey Blake
by Telegraph on Aug 10, 2009 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the most important part is the Curve and changeup
the manly beard is just no something Feldman can pull off

x
1) His fastball averages 91.3 MPH. Cliff Lee averages 90.5 last year, 91.1 this year. Feldman’s cutter averages 90.2, Lee’s averages 86. How much improvement does Feldman really need here? He has good velocity on effectively two different fastballs.
2) Command of his CB and improved command of his FB are key points.
3) He uses his changeup lightly and has been ineffective — this is the most important piece IMO.
4) He needs the Jenks beard to be truly frightening on the mound.
Feldman isn’t an ace, but he’s still got some development room at age 26 with a new arm-slot and radically overhauled mechanics. I don’t think he could ever be an ace, but a good #3 starter seems like where he could end up at.

I don’t read Sullivan anymore, but wasn’t he evoking the same undertone with the release of Sidney Ponson, IIRC?
Adam you might have made a post about it, but I remember some line to the effect of:

At this point, unless you’re absolutely sure you’ve got a Halloween hit, going up against those flicks is probably not a good idea… Shutter Island is out the first weekend in October, too… The Road, The Stepfather, and a couple other movies come out around that same time…
Probably not the ideal time to drop another pile of crap Rob Zombie remake…

Yeah, he owes the scorer a major gift, especially on the "triple"

much closer to the wildcard and TB is nipping at our heels

if TB swept LA, even if it meant they take over the WC lead.

Yes
jumble this whole thing up between East and West and let’s fight it out to the end. I just want someone to beat the Angels besides the Rangers!

Well, the good news is we get 7 games against them in September-October
But somebody else still needs to start whooping up on them.

Yeah, but I think the best we should hope for there is 5-2
So we need someone, ANYONE, to help us get within 3.

Coming off an off-day, bullpen is fresh, Laffey-Taffy on the mound
Meanwhile, the Rays get Io face Ervin Santana
I like our chances of getting to three games by Wednesday morning

Midnight Twitter from Jason Cole-
Big, big news on the Rangers prospect front coming early tomorrow. Trust me on this one.
Okay, let’s play the speculation game … what could it be?- Purke and/or Scheppers signed? Can’t see Purke signing until the 17th considering the haul he’s demanding, so maybe Scheppers accepted a Rangers-friendly compromise offer.
- Perez promoted to Frisco? The RR’s are off today, but tomorrow MP could start sliding in front of Ballard every 5th day for a pitch-limit outing.
- Perez to BAK and/or Ross to HIC? I don’t think JC would call these moves "big, big" news – just interesting news or something. So, doubt it.
- Further news about some fresh Latin American signings that contain some sexy names? Seems unlikely, all the big names are taken already, right?
- Smoak called up? Doubt it. Even ignoring the Davis angle, seems like the 40-man situation will keep Smoak a minor-leaguer until next season.
Anything else you can think of that could get a baseball-jaded crusty bahstahd like Jason Cole to qualify it as ‘big, big’ news? I’m leaning hard towards Perez-to-Frisco.

Yeah, I don't see what the big deal is, myself.
But with all the talent we’ve accumilated of late, I do wonder if that would get us in trouble.

Or is that truly the news? If the latter, is there a link?

Related: is anyone else bored with the farm right now? I guess it goes to show what a standout year 2008 was, and how engrossing it is watching guys like Holland/Feliz.

Bakersfield and Frisco are boring.
Smoak and Davis make OKC interesting. Perez, Brigham, Font, etc. make Hickory interesting. I follow Mendonca, Velasquez and Ross at Spokane. I’m not sold on Tullis.

The Rays and Rangers have been among the most aggressive teams claiming players on waivers, and the Rays already have made two moves that should prove beneficial, adding catcher Gregg Zaun and reliever Russ Springer.

Interesting.
I’d heard the Rays where claiming just about every low-salary guy out there, to prevent the Yanks or Red Sox from adding people, but I had no idea we where that active too.
Wonder if we’re doing the same?

SI Article about the Wild Card
3. Texas Rangers
The case for: They might actually have a better shot of winning the division in what is an alarming switch of identities: the Rangers have the better pitching and defense and the Angels win with offense. Texas smartly managed the innings of rookies Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz so they could act as the Rangers’ trade deadline “additions.” Now, at a time when some clubs need to scale back the roles of rookie pitchers, Texas has them fresh for the stretch run. The club is built on the hitting of Ian Kinsler, Josh Hamilton and Michael Young, and only Young among them has been healthy and productive, so odds are Kinsler and Hamilton are due to contribute. The bullpen has been terrific.
“The biggest thing with our club is that the defense has been good and the bullpen has been good and deep,” general manager John Daniels said. “Those are probably our two biggest keys. And the starting pitching has given us about one more inning per game on average, so that keeps you from having to go to your middle relief too often.”
The case against: This is too much of an all-or-nothing offense that needs to hit home runs to win. There are too many holes at the back end of the lineup to consistently wear down pitchers. The Rangers’ on-base percentage (.316) is the worst by the franchise since 1983. And until proven otherwise, the Rangers are a poor second-half team. In three of the past four seasons they took a winning record into the All-Star break and wound up with a losing season.

As much as it pains me to give SI much credit..
This is a pretty damn good analysis. Now all we have to do is prove them wrong by (1) getting Kinsler and Hamilton going (2) breaking the “second half swoon” tradition.
Personally, I’m hoping that the preponderance of road games actually helps with that.
