Tuesday morning Rangers news

Largely a quiet day today...

Jeff Wilson writes about Dustin Nippert getting a chance to be a regular in the Rangers rotation, with Vicente Padilla being axed.

Jennifer Floyd Engel has a column about the Rangers being playoff contenders, Josh Hamilton's issues, and some crawfishing on the competence (or lack thereof) of the g.m.

And Ken Rosenthal has some Rangers notes.

I was wondering

Any thoughts on picking up a guy like Bronson Arroyo or Doug Davis on waivers? I read somehwere about that (ESPN I think). Was just wondering about those possibilites with the financial situation at all. Some SP depth couldn’t hurt if we could afford it.

by eric03tx on Aug 11, 2009 11:05 AM CDT reply actions

He also has worse hair fashion sense than the Weaver Bros.

And that goofball leg kick.

I hate everything about Bronson Arroyo.

And now, becuase I said that, he will probably be starting for us by the end of the week.

Harang apparently cleared as well, which does surprise me a bit.

Link.

Harang is expensive (09:$11M, 10:$12.5M, 11:$12.75M ($2M buyout)) but he’s also a pretty good pitcher.

He’s not an ace, but he’s a Kevin Millwood type of 2/3 innings eater who would probably have some pretty good success here.

Could anyone get

CIN to eat some of his contract?

I'm not optimistic

that Harang will be worth that contract. I’d like to avoid aging righty fly ball pitchers that cost that much.

I agree

I have always liked Harang, and he strikes out his fare share of hitters. I just don’t think we could afford him without Cincy paying a big chunk of his contract.

Damnit

I got to leave to head to work and JCole hasn’t chimed in with his supposed “big news” yet. Argh.

Like I said in the minors thread, if it ain't a big signing, I'm gonna be dissapointed at this rate.

Two things..

Glad he is not going to Bakersfield.

Does this put him on the map as a possible late season addition next year? Most did not see him on the map until 2011 but this is a rather aggressive promotion.

He’s sorrowful at the Internet’s ability to destroy. Neither original nor very fringy.

Whether you agree with him on the Padilla decision, that’s more a matter of opinion. Here he seems explicitly against.

That surprised me too..

I’d guess if they are it’s mostly about c-blocking the other contenders, but I don’t buy it.

Ehh, I really think he was talking about earlier this year

with O’Day and Grilli. I just doubt that we would be taking the chance on blocking other teams right now with the risk of having to accept salary.
