Geez
It’s funny, Perez was born on April 4, 1991, and Felix was born on April 8, 1986. Makes it really easy to compare their progression to the minor leagues.
At age 18, Felix threw 92 innings in 16 games (15 starts). Perez is already at 93.2 innings in 22 games (14 starts).
Speaking of that... does anyone else dig "Sons of Anarchy"??

We all know JD reads Lonestarball, so this shouldn't be a surprise.
Martin Perez is the fucking shit. There’s no other way to say this. The difference between him and Wilmer Font was equal to (if not greater) than the difference between Wilmer Font and Jake Brigham. The little lefty only threw one inning in an effort to limit his total IP’s this season, but oh what an inning it was. He was pumping every single fastball at 93mph or higher. When he got into a bit of trouble (an "excuse me" check-swing double right down the line) he reached back and went right up the ladder on consecutive pitches. 93… 94… 95… 95… 96. Ninety Fucking Six. And he’s still only 18. Jeezus.
But even aside from the velocity there was a reason to get excited about Martin. When I saw him earlier in the season it was perhaps a bit easy to tell when he was gonna throw that curve of his. His arm and body would slow down just a bit. Not anymore. Everything looked the same right up until it left his hand. That’s huge. And the curve itself has some serious teeth on it. He was mainly throwing fastballs the inning I saw, but when he did break one off, it broke plenty. Definitely a plus pitch.
This guy could handle AA right now. I really and truly believe this. He’s special, special, special. SPECIAL. Johan special.

Comment From Jamie in Forney]
Good morning Nolan – Thank you for taking time to chat with us. First, as a lifelong Rangers fan I have to say that I am very excited with the direction that both you and Jon Daniels have laid out for the future. With that said, can you share with us your assessment on where Feliz is in his progression? Also, can you share with us the next 2-3 pitchers in the organization that you believe will have an impact, either this season or next season? Again, thanks so much for your time.

he seriously could be here by the end of next year… WTF?!??!
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
i really think that is rushing him
I’d rather he came up in 2011. I’m excited about this kid, but I don’t want us to jump the gun too early on a 19 year old, and lose out of his prime years. Plus he is going to have to build up his innings in order to make it to the big leagues. All of next year between AA and AAA. He will have pitched more innings next year, then he may be ready in ’11.
I think this creates an unnecessary logjam
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think he's likely to get a start or two
but mostly be in the bullpen. Might be difficult to catch him at home. Wow. Wow.
So, what does this do to him timeline for a ML debut? Start in Frisco next year, in Arlington for a cup of coffee in September? That even being possible is pretty amazing.

I’m not sure who are next owner is. If he is another small pocket small spending owner like the majority of Rangers owners have been, then I am understating the case.
If our next owner can lock them up after they are free agent eligible, than it isn’t a big deal. If they go on the market, then most likely we’d much rather have the age 28 season than the age 24 season.

I'd agree
and hopefully we’re reaching the point where we can leave guys down until they force their way onto the roster.
Right now, we’re still at that point where a struggling youngster is still better than what we have, but within a year or two that may no longer be the case.

If a guy is good enough to break into the majors at 20 or 21 then I don't think it really matters that much
Players like that are usually the type that have long and very successful careers and are usually pretty damn good from the get go.
Im all for manipulating service time to gain an extra year of control but I don’t want to start leaving guys down in the minors for entire seasons just to push back their FA to a more appropriate age
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I agree, but
you do not hold someone back only because of that. Sure, wait until whatever point a few weeks into the season to bring up Perez, but if he’s ready for the majors and he’s not blocked by a better pitcher, than you bring him up. That’s what I mean when I say you’re overstating your case.
I wish they had waited a couple of weeks to bring up Elvis but he’s been such a big part of the team’s transformation and competitiveness this year that I’m not really sure that would have been smart. I hope the team will gladly pay more for him in his prime as a trade off for the improved defense helping the team be in the playoff race all season.

Perez will end up being in the minors until a spot in the rotation opens up for him
Next year will be about building his stamina up some more and letting him continue to develop against better hitters. If all goes well, he’ll still need a few things to go wrong with the Rangers ML rotation for him to get a spot early in the 2011 season.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Perez
Perez isn’t rule 5 eligible until AFTER 2011 and with the winter of 2010 being the first real logjam we will face with regards to the 40 man roster I could easily see not bringing him up at all next year unless either he absolutely destroys the minors or we have so many injuries that he is literally the next in line.
Looking toward 2011 if he is still off the 40 man roster at the start of 2011 I see us Longoria-ing him and not bringing him up until late April 2011. He will be a just turned 20 year old at that point just FYI. That would allow us essentially 7 full years of team control if he never sees the minors again.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
With this type of fast-tracking
And the Holland/Andrus/Feliz treatment, you can seriously see this management Longoria-ing Perez?
Yeah sure
If Smoak gets promoted like we all expect early next year thats already one 2011 guy added to the 40. And if we give Scheppers a ML deal like I suspect will happen thats another guy along with the plethora of 2010 guys we have to protect.
So if you go into ST 2011 with Perez still at 19 years old and not on the 40 man roster why add him then when you can wait 3 weeks and then do it and gain an extra year of control. As a 5th starter he would only miss 2 or 3 starts at the beginning of the year so its not like a positional player who could miss out on almost 100 ABs. Plus it delays his FA another year which with our young team could mean the difference between us being able to afford everyone and letting him walk.

I can't believe how many people blasted me when I first started theorizing Perez would jump High A
of course I didn’t think it’d happen this year but god was I blasted.
Anyway good for Martin. I think he stays as a starter but with very strict pitch and innings limits. Much like Feliz last year would start but only go 3 or 4 innings per turn.
All morning long I was refreshing LSB and had the Hickory roster page open refreshing it to see if Perez’s name dropped off. Of course as soon as I leave for work this breaks. Damn you JCole for waiting so late in the morning.

But yeah I kinda expected Goyo to get his feathers ruffled a little
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I wasn't perturbed, but I didn't agree with the strategy
and I still don’t see the need for it. We haven’t seen a lot of cases lately where clubs hyperaccelerate their Latin American kids and see it work. The Mets and Mariners, you could argue, have done their best to wreck a few kids by doing this.
But I will say, one difference between this move and some of those is that I don’t get the feeling that Martin will be over his head. I’d just a question of whether it’s smartest to get his 19 or 20 year old season or his 26 or 27 year old season in Texas, rather than in New York or Boston.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions
FA
They aren’t doing this so he will be on the opening day roster next year. As I laid out somewhere in this thread I believe with our 40 crunch coming up they don’t even bring him up next year unless he absolutely forces them by destroying AA and AAA hitters. That leaves April 2011 as the earliest we see Mr Perez in Arlington at the ripe old age of 20 years old. If he starts 2011 in the majors and never sees the minors again he still doesn’t become a FA until just before he turns 26. So like I said above if we Longoria him in 2011 (all he’ll miss is at most 5 starts) that gives us his age 26 season.
If the guy has the stuff to make the majors at 20 years old I don’t think you worry about not getting his peak years under team control. Unless you plan on holding him back for multiple years which would defeat the purpose of going after these young guys.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Obviously they aren't talking about promoting him to start next year
but it’s not hard to do the math.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions
So if he goes out next year and dominates AA hitters
You would seriously rather keep him down all of 2011 in the minors just so that when he is 27 we have control of him?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
No, but then in 2011 you can "Longoria him"
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Longoria-ing him in 2011
Like I have said I want to do, only gives you his age 26 season. He would still be a FA at the age of 26.
To get his age 27 season you would have to wait until May of 2012 to bring him up
To get his age 28 season you would have to wait until May of 2013 to bring him up
I think some people don’t fully comprehend how young this guy is
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'm not sure what this has to do with my point
but whatever. I’m not advocating keeping him in the minors until May 2013.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions
I thought you were saying you would rather have him for his age 27 or 28 seasons than his age 21 season
Which would mean holding him back a long time to do so.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Nope
but the big problem with all of this is that he’s not able to – or at least he shouldn’t be asked to – take a major role in the rotation all season as a 20 year old. Even if he sparkles in AA and AAA, they shouldn’t start 2011 with him in the rotation. He should be brought along slowly early in that season so that he might be able to help a team that has a good chance to be a playoff contender, conserving a year of service time as well. When we’ve talked about this before my point has been that he should be considered a midseason (May, June, whatever his stamina and ability dictate) shot in the arm addition, not someone who needs to be penciled in for a rotation spot in March on.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions
I fully agree
Even if he’s ready to be in the rotation out of spring training you Longoria him to get that extra year of control. The 5th starter at the beginning of the season usually gets skipped a couple times anyway so he’d only be missing out on 3-4 starts most likely. Then either bring him into the rotation as your #5 starter or let him come out of the pen for a couple months before throwing him into the rotation.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
It seems likely
that they will put him in the bullpen sometime in 2011, like Holland and Feliz. Then I’d guess he’d be a near lock for the rotation in 2012 as they ease him into starting in late 2011.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Is there an advantage to starting him on AA competition while he’s on a good full-season tear, rather than making the same move at the beginning of 2010?
Maybe they’re capitalizing on his confidence now, vis a vis right out of ST 2010.

It gives the Rangers
(and MP) a chance to see how he does against stiffer competition. Saying he has a plus-plus CB is fine. Seeing it against competition that can actually hit a CB is the real test. Same thing last year with Feliz and his FB.

It will be really interesting
to see how they handle him and visa versa.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it's as simple as
they think he can compete at the AA level, and, yes, can’t hurt to get him a look at it now if you are seriously considering starting him there next season. It’s not unprecedented to give a guy a cameo two levels above where he is and then start him in the middle level the next season (the Rangers did that with Tatis). He is arguably the best pitcher in Low A, so on a competitive level he was ready for a promotion, and we all know the drawbacks of Bakersfield.
And I don’t think that confidence will ever be the problem for Perez.
by Brett Perryman on Aug 11, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, if it all works out, and it comes to the point where there is no chance to re-sign
look at the rumored trade offers the Mariners were getting for Felix…
The one thing i will say about your apprehension to using up his service time when he's 20 instead of waiting
is that pushing him like this puts him in line right with our other core players. Thats more important to me, stack the best, high cieling guys as quick as you can on top of each other to produce the highest amount of talent over a period of time to go for it. We are going for it from 2010-2014 or 15 with this group of position players+ SP. From that perspective, it makes alot of sense to push Perez to reach the bigs a little bit earlier to get himself up to speed to be as effective as he can be with this group of players we have up already.

I agree with that
It is definitely some amount of counterbalance for (potentially) not being efficient with his service time. And of course development doesn’t come on a linear path. There is no reason that they couldn’t give him a little more time at the upper levels after light speeding him there.

To make room on the 25-man roster for German, the club has optioned infielder Joaquin Arias to Oklahoma City. To make room on the 40-man roster for German, the team has designated right-handed pitcher John Bannister for assignment.
Padilla was DFA’d a couple days later and Borbon took his 25-man spot, noone his 40-man spot.

for real
Keepin it Classy Gentlemen
There is, in fact, a manly and lawful passion for equality which excites men to wish all to be powerful and honored. This passion tends to elevate the humble to the rank of the great; but there exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

Neftali Perez strikes again
Rotoworld being the culprit this time around
The Rangers have promoted 18-year-old prospect Martin Perez to Double-A Frisco.
Remember this name. Perez is rising quicker in the organization than Neftali Perez did. And it’s hard to say he hasn’t earned the assignment. The young southpaw compiled a 2.31 ERA and 105/33 K/BB ratio in 22 games (14 starts) for Class A Hickory this season. His mid-90s fastball, plus-curve and excellent change-up have some scouts comparing him to Johan Santana.
We just need to pass them off as brothers
The Perez Brothers are the Shit… i dont think anyone would really notice outside of the orginization if we just slowly assimilated Perez for Feliz and then passed them off as brothers and then we’d have a sweet marketing campaign come 2012.

I wonder what Johan Santana himself thinks of the younger Perez brother?

May as well try to pass of Elvis Andrus and Derek Holland as brothers.

Bannister getting claimed
is a little shocking to me. He apparently has some stuff, but his results in AA and AAA at such an advanced age made me think there was no way he’d get claimed. KC would have been one of the first teams up with a chance to claim him, so I wonder if other teams would have been interested as well…
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
you know, i dont really worry too much about KC claiming him
that probably means he isnt good

they are steadily attempting
to field a bullpen entirely of ex Rangers, and are getting the results one might expect.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Well, I don't really get it
but you have to assume that they know what they’re doing, and it’s obviously exciting. I don’t think that any of us doubted that he could compete at the AA level right now, and that was obviously what they based their decision on. Cahill’s point is very legitimate, though. You want to try to get as many good years as you can and minimize the rocky years for your high octane players, especially when you are a small time franchise, but I suppose that getting him to the proper competition level doesn’t preclude them from taking their time with him in AA and AAA until he is consistent and until all three of his pitches are rocking. The next few years are going to be a lot of fun.
They absolutely have to get out of the Cal League and Bakersfield.
I think the name of the game
is he can stay on his current pace (~5 ip/g) and still total out at a conservative number.
This reads as pure reward. No doubt dude has some rocky AA innings ahead of him this year.

For young Latin signees
they’re often a bit low. Depends on how often they’re updated. For example, I believe Fabio Castillo’s was recently updated, but sometimes guys will be listed at 6’, 150 lbs when they’re 21 and filled out.
This is like putting a 6 year in the 11-12 year old division.

A few things everyone should know about him:
A Martin Perez fastball is the preferred method of execution in 16 states.
Martin Perez doesn’t bowl strikes, he just knocks down one pin and the other nine faint.

‘Icy-Hot’ is too weak for Martin Perez. After a workout, Martin Perez rubs his muscles down with liquid-hot MAGMA.

it’s the same thing that was shoved up your ass a couple days ago.

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
You said some dumb shit and I called you on it and you refused to back down even when proven wrong as fucking ass shit.
That was a baseball argument where you were being dumb and difficult and I told you so.
This was a rather silly attempt at an ad hominem, the origin of which I found perplexing. I mean, I know letter/number boy up there is a bitter vitriolic asshole, but I generally thought we respected each other and I had no idea he had a specific problem with me or whatever and was wondering what exactly set him off. That’s all.
There’s a difference.
I have no problem taking what I dish out when it comes to actual arguments.
Telling someone that their “Screen namez is da stoopid, LoLz” is just odd, imo.
And, btw, your “Andruw Jones is just as big a part of the problem with this offense as Hankles” argument is still just as stupid as it was the other day when I called you the new worst. Sad, but true. You’re generally a pretty damn good poster, though. Still have no idea why you think Andruw is the suck vortex which is powering the black hole that is this offense. Dude’s been pretty good. I was only half-listening to the boradcast tonight, but I’m pretty sure I heard Josh say we were the last team to get a player to 40 walks on the season, and that it was Andruw who finally broke through. A part time player, mind you. Batting average is nice and all, and you can’t have every player hitting in the .230-range, but I wish we had more patient hitters like Andruw in this lineup, BA be damned.

Okay...
that’s fine. Disagree with my opinion. I have no problem with that. However when you say shit like I’m the worst and act like I’m some casual fan who has no idea what I’m talking about then that’s when I took exception.
AJ is hitting .190 since May 9th. Again I realize BA isn’t the sole measurement of a players success, but .190 over a 3 month period makes him part of the problem imo. He is drawing walks and getting on base which is refreshing, especially in this lineup. I just don’t like seeing him hit cleanup, when everyone is healthy of course. I guess it’s all context. AJ has been pretty damn good in regards to being the 25th man to make this roster to start the year and in comparison to some of the other sucky offensive seasons some of the Rangers hitters are having. As and everyday cleanup hitter though I don’t think he fits the bill.
Again, I still have no problem with you. I also think you’re a damn knowledgable baseball fan. However your ability to overexaggerate or overreact when someone doesn’t agree with you on something is amazing. You acted like I said Feldman should win the CY Young or some shit.
Bah…who cares, I’m done with all this AJ shit, actually I hope I’m wrong about him, it certainly won’t be the first or last time I’m wrong about something. Plus the Rangers offense needs all the help it can get right now.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I remember the D-Backs did this with an 18 year old named Anthony Rosario.
Pitched for AA El Paso at age 18…they later found out he was really older than he was..like 21 or 22.
His name was Tony Pena and now pitches for the White Sox. Lol
