John Bannister claimed
The Royals have claimed John Bannister on waivers from the Rangers.
Bannister now joins Nick Gorneault, Joe Koshansky, and Agustin Montero in the litany of guys who spent brief, inexplicable stints on the Ranger 40 man roster and then moved on along.

Agustin Montero
Remember when that guy was going to make our bullpen?
Yeah, me neither. Now if we can only get Eyre off the 40…

Whatever the case may be...
His name is still really awesome.

I bitched at length at NMLR...
…over the decision to add him, particularly since it cost us Ben Kozlowski, and that was the inevitable response.
I’ve never understood adding guys you sign as a minor league free agent to the 40 man roster like that. Either give him a major league deal in the first place, or don’t add him for the Rule 5 draft. If another team liked him enough to make him a Rule 5 pick and keep him on their roster all season, they’d give him a major league deal in the first place and give themselves more flexibility to option him.

Also...
Saying the name Agustin Montero is like your tongue just had mind-blowing sex with the girl in high school who wouldn’t give you the time of day but you meet up with 12 years later after you come home for a visit with your folks and she’s twice as fine with age as you remember her to be with you were 16.
Too bad him and the move to add him to the 40 was about as equal to the dry handjob from the girl you settled for at 16 that ended up with three kids from different fathers working at the Dollar General.

I disagree...
If you can get a guy who’ll sign a minor league contract, you can wait until the Rule 5 draft (“the draft” for this post) to decide whether or not you want to risk losing the guy in the draft. You might, for example, subsequently find a player(s) you’d prefer on your 40-Man Roster (“40”). At that point, you can then just cross your fingers and hope not to lose your minor league free agent acquisition in the draft, as opposed to having to designate that player for assignment.
Or, you might want the guy and he’s willing to accept a minor league contract. You also figure that he’s likely to be selected in the draft, which you don’t want. But when you signed that player, you already had a full 40. So now you can spend until the draft to try and trade someone from your 40. This (a) allows you to sign the player immediately, preventing another team from signing him, and (b) gives you time to trade someone off of the 40 rather than having to immediately designate a player for assignment.
I’m not sure what you mean when you say that adding a player to the major league roster will “give themselves more flexibility to option him.”

speaking of winterball warriors
Nick Masset is having a really nice season.

Yup, low OBPer's and Rangers 40 casualities
Someone should write a new ‘Moneyball’ about the Royals.
Could call it ‘Fuckupball’ or ‘slapdickball’ or something.

T.R.
In the spring, I believe he said he really wished the Rangers would give Joaquin Arias and Travis Metcalf a shot to be everyday players.
Those two are both posting sub-700 OPSs in AAA.

In fairness
He has been really good in AAA the last two years. The question was never whether he could be a solid upper level minor leaguer, however.

I think the Royals scouting budget is so low
they can only scout players within a couple of hundred yards of their own team.

Bannister's addition to the 40 was not inexplicable.
He was throwing 94-96 mph with his fastball and still has a very good curve ball. At the time when 40-man decisions were being made, he was a guy who looked like he was going to help out the Major League bullpen this year.
I fully back the decision to add him then and the decision to drop him now.
True, instead of progressing, he seems to have regressed drastically
Maybe a change of orgs will do him well.

I'm inclined to agree with these sentiments...
It’s hard to remember exactly how I felt about John Bannister’s prospects after the Winter/Fall Leagues commenced, as his 2009 numbers make is so hard to believe I was once excited about his chances. And although I’ve already but my memory in question, I’m pretty sure that if the Rangers didn’t add him to the 40-Man Roster when they did, he could have simply left as a six year minor league free agent.

yeah I don't think it was an odd decision
once I learned he was dealing 96-98 in winter ball though not in the regular season.
Lineup:
2B Omar Vizquel
3B Michael Young
CF Marlon Byrd
DH Andruw Jones
RF Josh Hamilton
1B Hank Blalock
LF David Murphy
C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
SS Elvis Andrus

Knowing Wash...
He’s probably starting Omar the first game in CLE as a gesture since he played there so long.

it seems like he could reasonably move down Jones or Byrd to break up all those LH
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
If Ron Washington could...
he’d make his lineup with 9 Marlon Byrds.
Marlon Byrd doesn’t slide down the lineup for anyone other than Marlon Byrd, of course.
