This Day in LSB History
Today, 3 years ago, we talked about Brad Wilkerson, and why I thought the Rangers would bring him back in 2007 despite a terrible 2006 season.
As it turns out, they did bring him back, and he was still terrible in 2007.

I hated that bastard.
I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.
Isn't Brad the all time example
of high OBP not translating across leagues?

That
we were too chickenshit to move Soriano from 2B and that we had to dump CHP?

Wilkerson was a better hitter than Soriano in 2004 and 2005, the two years before we traded for him, and he was cheaper than Soriano.

Wasn't Wilkerson
basically damaged goods when we traded for him?

Soriano and Position Change
I thought the Rangers did raised a bunch of concerns about Wilkerson’s shoulder because the Nats were not getting anything in writing about Soriano’s position change.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 11, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Nats didn't need anything
in writing about the position change.
It’s the basic agreement, if he doesn’t field the position the manager puts him at, he is in violation of his contract. I think Soriano tried to hang tough at 2B until his agent told him the facts of life. He doesn’t play where the manager wants him, he gets suspended, he doesn’t accrue service time, and he doesn’t become a free agent.

what a horrible situation Alex Rodriguez' departure was
I mean getting what we got for him from the Yanks wasn’t a horrible return, but it would’ve been nice to have gotten some young pitching as well…then throw in the fact that we ate so much of that contract, and the Soriano departure fiasco, with that return, and wow.

true
Soriano, Spider and what?
I guess I’m just happy we got a quality major leaguer in return, where with the Soriano trade we got nothing.
Why did we make that trade, other than A-Rod wanted out? They weren’t the only ones willing to take on that amount of his salary, right? Boston and a few others?

Soriano, Spider and what?
And nothing.
We made that trade because ARod wanted out, Tom Hicks didn’t want to pay him any more, and Buck Showalter hated him and wanted him gone.

and
we got to Pay them $67 million for the privilege of dealing with the Yankees.

Yeah, it was
the real problem was that we turned down a much better offer from Boston to enter into that New York mess.

The Rangers turned it down,
or did Alex? I though the union prevented him from taking a salary cut to be traded to boston.

Even if the Rangers eat
the salary cut, its a better deal than the Yankees deal.

Beats the hell out of paying $67 million to the Yankees for the privilige of taking ARod off our hands.

they can trade Halladay’s contract any time they want…and I’m sure if the deal is right, the opposing team will take on Wells, too…probably with salary eaten

I'd work on a deal for Halladay,
but Wells’ contract is way too much for the Rangers to take on ($100MM/5yrs IIRC), for a 30 something year old CF.

Kip Wells started that game for us
Left with an “undisclosed injury.” Was that the last game Wells, the Rangers’ big pitching acquisition at the deadline, ever pitched for us?
shoot.. i was at that game. awesome.
got mclemore’s autograph, too.

Wilkerson was such a big disappointment.
I really liked the guy during his first 2 years in the league, and was happy we were getting him, even if I was underwhelmed by the return from that deal…but he just completely sucked the life out of this team for a while there.
Was it just injury that got a hold of him, or did he just suck?

the future answer to all 3 OF positions – lead-off hitter – OBP connoisseur – and all around nice guy.
Still can’t forget that 3-HR game he had, though.

So to make sense of the whole thing:
Yankees get: Alex Rodriguez + a shit ton of money
Rangers get: Alfonso Soriano + Joaquin Arias
Nationals get: Alfonso Soriano
Rangers get: Brad Wilkerson, Termel Sledge, and Armando Gallaraga
Padres get: Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez, and Termel Sledge
Rangers get: Adam Eaton + Akinori Otsuka
Tigers get: Armando Galaragga
Rangers get: Michael Hernandez

Ok, that may be completely accurate AND clear...
But it STILL doesn’t make sense in hindsight….

But looking back on that,
who would’ve JD made the trades that could get us within striking range of the playoffs within 3 years.

My point is
that as f’d up as those deals were, I never, in my wildest dreams, thought that JD would be able to get deals like the Tex to ATL teade done. Unfortunately the only casualty so far is Harrison, at least for this season.
