Kinsler to start his 2 day rehab start.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4392571

I really want to know why they have already decided its a 2 day assignment.  That seems fairly ridiculous to me in light of Hamilton's early return from the DL, and the slump Kinsler was in prior to his DL trip.  In my opinion, the Frisco appearances should last as long as they need to last.  If Kinsler is hitting the ball and seems like he is unaffected by the Hamstring, I see no reason not to bring him up in 2 games.

However, if he is still having issues, I see nothing wrong with using the whole 30 days if necessary.  I'd just hate to see a repeat of the Hamilton fiasco.

Because it would be embarrassing

for thier supposedly AS caliber secondbaseman to put up a .242/.313/.482 line in AA.

It's a rehab assignment, not a demotion..

If they say he’s down until he’s hitting, then it is clearly viewed (and rightly so) as a demotion based on performance. It might be helpful, but it isn’t going to sit well with an established player, is it?

So, we’re stuck with 2 games to get his timing back. It’s probably not even a matter of seeing if the hammy is OK, as I bet they already have determined that before sending him out.

Just to clarify a bit..

I think pre-ordaining the length of the assignment is always a dumb idea, but it seems to be fairly common lately.

It's always seemed odd to me

watching teams rush back players from DL.

The whole Hamilton thing irked me. He hits 600 OPS in the minors, then comes up and puts up a 500 OPS for July. To put the team at risk to spare a player’s feelings just seems stupid.

The Hamilton one is a great example..

I think we all believed he was coming back too soon.

The way I remember it, the majority of folks where on the "he's gonna come back and carry the offense!" bandwagon, actually.

Hamilton had surgery

And was unable to do any baseball activities for awhile

Kinsler has just had to rest his hamstring which is probably why the short stint.

I agree we shouldn’t bring him up until he’s ready but saying only two days is fine with me especially with Boston coming up. We need our horses for that series

Then aim for two days, but don't announce it as a hard date...

I think that is Dan’s point. By announcing it, the pressure is clearly on the club to bring him up then unless he’s clearly not ready (like a couple of golden sombrero games). The slightest sign of success, like a couple of 1-4 nights, and he’s up ready or not.

I don't think

it makes any sense to put a deadline on it. He should come up when he is ready. If he is smashing the ball around the park and running well, I have no problems with him coming up in 2 games.

If he goes 0-8 in those games and isn’t running full speed, I don’t see the downside in extending the stay for weeks or maybe the whole month.

They want him back up here ASAP just for the off-chance that he'll go on a tear and maybe carry this offense for awhile.

Which is understandable if he’s healthy, I guess. But I would tend to agree, I’d give him 3-4 games to rehab at least, and hopefully tweak his crappy approach some.

There's a part of me that hopes his first rehab start is against a soft-tosser...

It might be really illuminating to him if a AA guy punks him..

If he can tear it up in the majors

he will tear it up in the minors and be back in 2 games anyway. No need to put a hard date on it.

I think number of games

matters less than results. If he isn’t smacking the ball around, there isn’t much point in calling him up.

fair enough

That’s my point as well – don’t see why LSJ would spell out his preferred # of games and think that’s any better than Texas saying 2.

He’d still be hitting in August if he had spent 2-3 more weeks in the minors? I do.

I suspect he would be

But I’m not sure he would have started hitting any quicker, and it’s not as though we had other guys in the majors who were hitting who could have replaced him in the lineup.

I understand your point, though.

I think that 2nd part is

In July, Hamilton had an OPS ( .205/.244/.269 OPS 513) that was 250-450 points lower than Jones, Murphy, Byrd, or Cruz, yet Hamilton got more PAs than all of them, except Byrd.

Leaving Hamilton on the DL would have been a fairly significant offensive boost in July.

Yah, I'm wondering if they were just scared to leave him down too long...

especially in light of last week’s revelation. He just hadn’t shown any real sign he was ready IMO. I remember posting about how that Type-A personality, “quick healer” type often tried to come back too soon.

You would think

that worst case you could put him in Frisco and send along Narron with him.

At some point they really need to put the good of the team over the feelings of the players. I was glad to see them do it at SS with MY, they do seem scared to do it with Hamilton and Kinsler though.

Hopefully kinsler rakes in his minor league appearances and its all moot.

nothing new

but tulsa is playing this up. had this forwarded to me from my sports director via their promotions people:

DRILLERS TO FACE KINSLER, RIDERS

The Tulsa Drillers will host the Frisco RoughRiders Wednesday night at Drillers Stadium in the opening game of a six-game homestand, and it was announced Tuesday evening by the Texas Rangers that the Riders will have a major leaguer in their lineup. Second baseman Ian Kinsler will be with Friso for the first two games of the three-game series to rehab a strained hamstring.

Kinsler is in his fourth season in the big leagues and has become one of the top infielders in the American League. In 2008, he enjoyed his best season in the majors, hitting .319 with 18 home runs, 71 runs batted in and 26 stolen bases. He was rewarded with his first appearance in the Major League All-Star Game.

Also in Wednesday night’s game, the Drillers will face Martin Perez, one of the top pitching prospects in the Rangers’ minor league system. Perez, only 18-years-old, will be making his Double A debut after being promoted from Class A Hickory where he was 5-5 with a 2.31 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 93 innings pitched.

The homestand figures to be crucial for the Drillers post-season hopes. Tulsa will enter Wednesday’s game trailing first-place Northwest Arkansas by two games with only 26 games remaining in the second-half of the season.

First pitch for Wednesday’s opener is scheduled for 7:05PM at Drillers Stadium.

after 2 games he is a sparkling 0 fer 7 with a walk and HBP. Clearly he is ready to plug into the leadoff spot of the lineup.

TRACY, FRISCO TAKE WIN FROM DRILLERS

Over the course of a 140-game schedule, some losses are tougher than others. Thursday night’s 8-6 10-inning loss was especially painful for the Tulsa Drillers.

For much of the game, the Drillers appeared on their way to a second straight win. They carried a 6-1 lead into the top of the eighth inning, but watched as Frisco rallied with five runs to send the game into extra innings.

The RoughRiders completed the comeback when Chad Tracy, the son of Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy, belted his second home run of the night in the 10th inning. Tracy’s two-run homer off Tulsa reliever Adam Bright was a line drive that quickly landed into the net above the left field wall.

Frisco collected 9 of its 11 hits after the seventh inning, and 6 of the Riders’ 7 runs came on home runs.

It was an especially tough loss because it also hurt Tulsa’s position in the standings. The defeat dropped the Drillers three games behind first-place Northwest Arkansas with only 24 games left in the second half.

The loss also spoiled another strong outing from starting pitcher Brandon Durden. The lefthander looked to be headed to his sixth straight win after allowing only one run on two hits in six innings of work. Since returning from Class A Modesto on July 12, Durden has made seven starts, working 47.1 innings with a 1.75 ERA.

Darin Holcomb staked Durden to an early lead with his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the first inning.

Adam Fox produced the only damage against the Tulsa starter when he led off the second with his 16th homer, tying the game at 1-1.

The Drillers retook the lead in the third as Holcomb singled in front of Cole Garner’s 13th home run. The two-run homer put Tulsa in front 3-1.

The lead expanded to 6-1 with a three-run fifth. With two outs and the bases empty, Holcomb singled for his third hit of the night. After Garner drew a walk, Ryan Harvey belted his team-leading 19th homer to clear the bases. The three-run blast left the park over the center field wall.

Andy Graham followed Durden to the mound and worked a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the lead before Frisco’s big rally in the eighth.

Renny Osuna began the rally with a leadoff single against reliever Jonathan George. George retired the next two hitters before walking Craig Gentry. Tulsa manager Ron Gideon turned to Tommy Baumgardner, and the lefthander was greeted by Mitch Moreland with a run-scoring single.

Edgmer Escalona took over for Baumgardner and Tracy deposited his first pitch into the left field net to trim the Drillers lead to 6-5. Adam Fox then completed the RoughRiders’ comeback by sending Escalona’s second pitch over the center field wall, tying the game at six.

Escalona finally ended the inning when he retired Steven Murphy on a fly ball to left field.

Tulsa almost reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Harvey was hit by a pitch before Mike McKenry sent him to second with a sacrifice bunt. When Jeff Kindel singled to right with two outs, Harvey rounded third as right-fielder Moreland threw home. Harvey collided with catcher Manuel Pina after the throw, but the Frisco catcher held onto the ball to record the out and end the inning.

The game stayed tied until Tracy’s second homer in the tenth gave Frisco its first lead of the night.

The Drillers will wrap up their three-game series with the RoughRiders Friday night. Chaz Roe (6-2, 3.03 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa against Frisco’s Michael Kirkman (5-6, 4.71 ERA) at Drillers Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

NOTES: Garner’s third inning homer extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games, the longest streak for a Tulsa player this season. . . .Rex Rundgren’s 8-game streak ended with a 0-5 night. . . .The home run by Fox in the second inning was only the second homer that Durden has allowed this year in 74.2 innings with the Drillers. . . .Graham is still expected to start on Sunday for the Drillers despite working the one relief inning. The inning was used to get Graham extra work since he has not pitched since August 6. . . . Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler ended his rehab stint with the RoughRiders by going 0-5. He twice flew out to deep center field in the game. Kinsler is expected to rejoin the Rangers in time for their game with Boston on Friday night.
