Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Wednesday a.m. things

That was a Padilla-esque outing from Dustin Nippert last night, stretches of dominance with one awful inning mixed in.  Although given the way the Rangers were swinging the bat last night, even if that meltdown could have been contained, it probably wouldn't have mattered.

Jeff Wilson's game story focuses on Nippert's outing and how one inning messed it up for him.

Ian Kinsler starts a two-game rehab stint today, and is expected to be activated Friday for the game against Boston.  I'm guessing that Julio Borbon gets sent down if Nelson Cruz's ankle is better.

Padilla-esque

The only start of Padilla’s that I can recall being more dominant than Nippert’s outing last night was the 1-0 shutout in Seattle earlier this year.

Yes, Nippert had the bad inning. But it seemed that Nippert got really pissed at himself, buckled down and threw pitches that no one could hit – whereas Padilla would have gotten pissed at the batter, or just not cared.

To be fair...

Nippert did seem to get pretty unlucky on a number of them.

The first two singles were on pitches that were just on the edges of the zone, and low — really nice job by the hitters.

After which, Nippert started slipping further out of the zone and walked a few guys, before coming back into the zone for strikes again.

Just a really really rough inning.

by Trickman on Aug 12, 2009 10:18 AM CDT reply actions

It all started with the batters being patient and a mix of being squeezed and trying to paint

He got behind in the count and the batters took advantage. They did get a few luck flairs on balls on the outside, but that’s baseball.

It kind of reminded me of softball where everyone starts 1-1. So one team just stands up there and takes pitches and the pitcher gets rattled and knows they aren’t going to swing, but still can’t hit the plate.

Nippy had a good outing, but he pulled a Feldman in that one inning and tried to start painting corners and hitting certain spots instead of just rock and fire.

On the last podcast

either Jamey or AJM said that Kinsler sitting down for 15 days or so may be a good thing because he looked like he needed a break (more mental than physical).

I hate to hope but I’m not going to disagree with that assertion. An en fuego Kinsler down the stretch could be a good addition to This Thing.

I also think we need to concentrate a heckuva lot more on the Wild Card than LAA until further notice.

Kinsler & Josh need to be themselves and nothing more.

Hank F needs to mix in more consistency. He’s been the Mike Keane of the Rangers (the hits have been HUGE but there haven’t been enough) but I wanna see a salary drive September from him.

Yeah, he looks pretty cnonsistent to me , too

Virtually every game dating back to July 11th (roughly 1 month) is one of the folllowing:

0-4, 1-4, 0-5, 1-5

He has 5, count ’em, FIVE 2 hit games in that span.

We’ve also seen his OPS drop pretty consistently from .840 on that date to its current .789

What we need from Hank isn’t consistency, it’s that salary drive that Josey mentions. He’s always been a streaky hitter, and we need a nice long GOOD streak.

Hank F's performance and meaning to the team since July 1

cannot be judged solely on his numbers. Yes, it sucks that he hasn’t taken a walk. He’s simply making way too many outs but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been valuable to the team.

We’ve been thru the list several times – he had huge, huge hits in that two week hot streak – what 6, 7 games where he was a monster with several of those games coming v. LAA?

Then we have the much fabled post AS Break Hank F. Yeah, the numbers suck but who had the big hits in those first two games v the Bosox?

Who had the late HR that extended a 1-0 to 2-0 and enabled the team to beat ZGreinke?

Who had 3 HR & 5 RBI this past Thursday – Saturday when the team was beginning to flat-line?

Hank F has had massive value to this team since July 1 and is a big reason they turned their June Swoon around. To say otherwise is simply foolish.

Bitch and moan all you want about when is Chris Davis coming back but realize that Davis hit .143 with a .491 OPS against LHs this year.

Hank F is at .238 with a .740 OPS v LHs this year – not great but much better than Davis.

Davis can try again next year but to put him in the line-up this year when the team still has a chance to play in post-season would be dumb.

Just so I'm clear...

…it is your position that Chris Davis would be more likely than not to put up an EQA worse than .261 the rest of the season, if he came up?

BP has Blalock as sub-replacement-level offensively this year. I’m just amazed you are so dead-set on keeping a sub-replacement-level hitter, who won’t be here next year, in the lineup.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 12, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Did the chemistry on this team improve on July 1? That's the magical date Hank F started playing every day.

None of us really know about the chemistry but the June Swoon ended that night. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

EQA has it’s place in the world of stats but it will never supplant wins & losses and shoehorning Davis into the line-up when there was a better option on the bench (Blalock) was upsetting the chemistry. Don’t think so? Look at the standings.

Chris Davis was never ready to play in The Show this year. If he were to get 4 ab’s a night for 162 games a year, he was on a pace to strike out 266 times. He hit .143 with a .491 OPS v LH’s!!! What more did you need to see?

Maybe he comes back next year and is productive but he was drowning this year.

Blalock won’t be here next year, totally understood. But THIS year, we’re contending for the post-season and everybody – the team, management, the fans and especially Chris Davis- are better off with him in OKC and Blalock in the line-up every freaking day.

Move forward and let the healing begin.

So you want Hank F. to play every day...

I’m surprised a Bill James adherent such as yourself would advocate a sub-replacement-level bat in the everyday lineup for something like team chemistry.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 12, 2009 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Between Hank F

and CDavis, the better option is Hank F.

Starting in June and into early July before the plug was mercifully pulled, all pitchers were knocking the bat out of Davis’ hand with 90 mph fastballs. The kid was drowning and killing the team.

Teams continue to finagle their rotations so LH starters face us. Blalock’s numbers v LHs are fairly pedestrian but much better than what CDavis (.143 batting average / .491 OPS) did. Who gives you the better chance to win?

Next year will take care of itself. Blalock will be gone and maybe Davis retrenches but this year the team is in contention and our best option between those two to win meaningful games is Hank F.

CD has his OBP up to .400, OPS over .900

We asked him to sacrifice some home runs in order to cut down on the strike out rate and improve the walk rate, and he’s done that

He hasn’t fixed his swing against lefties, but he does have his OBP over .300 against them.

Point being, offense plus defense, our team will win more with CD in the lineup than with Blalock in it… just my opinion

but this is why we agreed to disagree

that because CD sucked ass before he was sent down that he will suck ass if he is called up is just so retarded.

You just have to look at the Angels and Howie Kendrick for a player who was sucking wind, got sent down, and then has taken it up a notch since being called back up.

As bad as Blalock has been since the break, it definitely can’t hurt.

Not the same argument

Your point was that Blalock becoming a full-time player was the reason the team pulled out of the “June swoon.”

If you want to argue that Hank contributed to several victories in July with big hits, that’s fine, but it’s not the same thing.

And you can wishcast Hank into a good player this year all you want, but the fact is that despite a number of key hits, he’s made outs in nearly 72% of his plate appearances, which is terrible for any major-leaguer, but especially so for one that occupies a corner infield/DH slot.

Spin that any way you want, but at the end of the day, Hank’s sub-290 OBP is a big reason (along with Hamilton and Kinsler’s poor seasons) that this offense isn’t producing at the level it should be.

Not going to do your homework in depth, but...

Here’s a quick reading of only the July recaps:

7/3 Byrd RBI double in the 5th to give us the 3-1 win, right after TB closed it to 2-1 in the top half
7/5 Byrd 2 RBI to key a 5-2 win over TB
7/7 Jones 3 run HR, Salty 2 RBI in a 8-5 win over the Angels
7/10 MY 3 run HR, Cruz 2 run HR in a 6-4 win over Seattle

7/19 – KInsler 2 run walkoff
7/20 Murph & Salty go back-to-back to key 6-3 win over BOS
7/22 Cruz’s huge catch and Elvis’ squeeze, 3-1 win over BOS
7/24 Byrd gets HR off Greinke to key 2-0 win

That’s just a quick run through that month, and SHOULD go to show that other people contributed to key wins during that month. I’m sure if I widen the search to include the whole season, my point will be proven correct, and I haven’t even addressed the stellar pitching and defense that keyed some of those games.

The point is, you haven’t proven to anyone but yourself that Hank carried us.

In three of the games you reference (I didn'

Hank F hit the two-run that gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in a game they won 3-1. Byrd made a nice contribution to help extend the lead but there’s no question Hank F had the more important hit.

July 20 – It was Hank F who provided the gamewinning rbi, breaking a 2-2 tie but if you’re going to credit Byrd for having the big hit v Greinke, you better credit Hank F with the big double in the 8th inning to make the score 2-0.

Yeah, the overall numbers aren’t great and will catch up in the long run but since July 1 no other non-pitcher other than Michael Young has been more important to this team’s success since July 1 because of the big hits he has racked up.

Since the All-Star Break, Hank has the lowest OPS of any hitter on the team, at .616.

That’s behind Andrus, Byrd, Cruz, Hamilton, Young, Jones, Kinsler, Murphy, Vizquel, and even Salty & Teagarden.

So he must be coming up with a big hit every time he gets on base (because we know he isn’t walking) as that’s pretty much the only way to overcome the big bag of suckitude he’s saddling this offense with otherwise.

Just use the charging guy’s momentum against him; i.e. Pedro versus Zimmer. Or, you know, if you’re a man, grab the guy in a headlock and wail away.

Youk really wussed it up

I honestly expected more from him. Not a punch, not a charge/lift/takedown. Prett much got punked by a string bean pitcher. Plus the hemlet throw was totally bitch-like. He should get suspended 1 game for charging the mound and 4 more for douching up the entire mound charging process.

Indians fan here.

I was really impressed by Nippert. A big, intimidating presence with a nice fastball/change. He just ran into an Indians offense that has been really hot lately (6 1/2 runs per game over the past 20).

Diamondback fans must be kicking themselves that he ran out of options over there, but that’s baseball.

i kind of agree

that inning was tough on him, but he’s got good stuff, just needs to continue to hone his control. Throws a definite plus FB and the way he threw his CU last night makes him a very dangerous pitcher.

Question

I had to run an errand and totally missed Nippert’s bad inning. Was wondering if Salty’s dead arm issue played a part. We’re they able to extend the inning because of him?

Even if he wasn’t an issue in that inning you could argue his inability to keep guys from running caused Nippert to through more pitches in at least the first few innings.

by bdavison94 on Aug 12, 2009 11:28 AM CDT reply actions

I think he had one stolen base on him and it was close. Also it was in the inning befor the big one

His arm to second isn’t an issue. It’s just getting it back to the mound. I really believe “dead arm” = “get your damn head straight and make a simple throw back to the plate.” He was benched, plain and simple. He still has a cannon and teams still need to respect that.

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Salty's throw bounced about 12 feet in front of 2B

but did make it to the base. TAG called it “a good throw” but I called bs.

Salty also had one yip on a throw back to the pitcher.

I’m still not convinced he doesn’t have the Mackey Sassers.

by Josey Wales on Aug 12, 2009 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Just cause a throw bounces doesn't mean it was a bad throw

If it bounces and stays low to where it lands right on the base thats better than a high throw that makes it there in the air. Its the same reason 3B and SS sometimes skip their throws to 1B. You can throw it as hard as you want and you won’t airmail the 1B.

Hometown article about Derek Holland

Back in Newark, Holland’s parents, Rick and Wendy Holland, watched the thrilling start, just like they do every time Derek pitches.

Rick said it never gets old.

“That was really something,” he said of Sunday’s game. "It’s just been amazing all year. You’re watching a major league game and here’s my son out there pitching. It’s just amazing. It’s some kind of ride.

“When I watch him, he’s just so composed. He just looks relaxed and like he belongs.”
