I'm pretty resigned to this as the only route to the postseason.
The Angels just aren’t losing games.

BP gives the Rangers...
…a better shot at winning the West than the Wild Card.

What is that based on?
The makeup (offense, defense, pitching) of the Red Sox versus the Angels? Strength of schedule?

Usually the Rangers can't beat the team they are chasing
see Mainers (90’s), however this year they are crushing the Angels. It is just that no one else is.

Texas Rangers
The little engine that ????

...chases breaking balls?
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
Kind of hard to beleive the effing Mariners are fourth in the WC standings at 5.5 out.
Of course, it’s even harder to beleive we’re second with our offensive offense.

Rangers can no hit curve ball. Straight ball, they hit it very much. Curve ball, bats are inept.
I thought the AL West was suppose to be the sucky division.
The AL Central really blows. The Twins had better come to town next week and roll over like they did for the Angels.

Excellent point

94 Wins
will get you a WC berth.
Texas needs to go 32-23.
Very do-able.

If we take two games
in every series (including CLE), it puts us right at 32 wins.

51 games left to play
not 55.

If 94 games is the magic number
Boston would need to go 30-20.
Gammons was on ESPN the other night saying their win over Detroit was their first win over a winning team in three weeks or somesuch.
They still have 3 games in Texas (with no Beckett) and a boatload o’ games v. Tampa & NYY with a nice suspension being thrown down on Youkah on the way.

32-19
is what the Rangers would have to do for the rest of the season to reach 94 wins. I am not sure I agree with Gammons about the 94 wins. I think 92 may be enough.

Gammons didn't say 94 wins would do it that I know about.
I said 94 wins as a way to stop worrying about the day-to-day how many games are we back mantra that was going on in here.

I did see footage of Wakefield yesterday taking PFP and he’s nowhere close to returning. Moving very stiffly and limping from his hamstring injury as well.

101-win team
We’d have to play like a 101-win team the rest of the way in order to reach 94 wins. That isn’t going to happen. We’re currently playing like an 89-win team.
Thru 111 games in 2008
The Boston Red Sox were at 63-48 (one game ahead of the current Ranger pace), 1.5 games ahead of Minn/Chi & 2.5 games ahead of NYY for the Wild Card.
That meant the Red Sox were playing at a 92-70 pace.
The Red Sox finished the season 32-19 to go 95-67.
That’s what it takes to win and it’s not impossible.

And the current Rangers are playing at a 90 win pace.

Huge series coming up...
with the BoSox. I just hope the Rangers don’t choke away a couple more games with the Indians before then, like they did yesterday.
Today is Martin Perez Day. Yay!

So the Texas defense sucked last night?

Logical phallus is more like it...
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Since it is not the pitching
would it be OK if they reverted back to thier 2008 BB rate?

That's a good point
Yesterdays bases loaded walk was the first one I can remember seeing for this year (I’m sure there were others) But I remember last year turning off the TV and throwing the remote in disgust game after game of walks that either loaded the bases or walked them in.
Gloves are a ton better, but the pitching has made the same leaps as the defense has. Besides, gloves can’t catch balls that are hit 12 rows deep into right field. There’s been alot less of that this year.
Not really...
HR/9 is basically the same.
K/9 is basically the same.
The only place the pitchers have statistically improved is in BB/9, which suggests that the majority of the improvement has been due to glovework, unless you argue that the batters aren’t hitting the ball as hard when it doesn’t leave the park, and therefore are making it easier on the defense.
He sort of has a point that I've noticed too...
The timeliness of things seems improved this year. It won’t show up in the stats, but I don’t recall as many bases loaded walks, or meltdown innings like last night. We seem to be doing a better job as to WHEN things happen, and other than strand, I don’t think it’s quantifiable.

That was kind of what I was going for.
The numbers don’t back me up (HR/9 and K/9 being the same) but it’s more the feeling of the games. It seems like every other game last year had an inning like the one Nipps had in the third. This year, Holland had one or two, Nipp has had his, and Jennings is mainly the one who contributes to the meltdown inning. (granted, someone has to put those men on base that Jennings let in)
even though the HR/9 has stayed the same
the are 6th in the AL this year vs 12th last year.
