Doug Melvin Throws a Transaction Tantrum

Doug Melvin is unhappy with the Brewers' play, and he's had enough, DFA'ing Bill Hall, sending J.J. Hardy down to AAA, firing pitching coach Bill Castro, and bringing Alcides Escobar and former Ranger Jason Bourgeois up to the majors.

Hall is owed $8.5 million for 2010, which the Brewers are going to have to eat.  Yummy yummy.

If Esteban German hadn't gotten called up, he's someone the Rangers could have looked at (once he was released), as a 25th man who could play multiple positions and give them a righty bench bat.

Unbelievable.

To think last year, Milwaukee looked like a force to be reckoned with (Sheets, Sabathia, Braun, Fielder, Hardy, Hall [to a lesser extent]).

Bet they’d like Nelson Cruz back.

I occasionally get it right...
If you could swing a deal to land Hardy, then I think you can bring back either Milton Bradley or Blalock to DH, roll with Josh Hamilton in center until Julio Borbon is ready and the Murphy/Byrd/Cruz combo in the outfield corners. You’ve got one area where you are probably weak defensively — centerfield — but overall, you’ve got a strong defensive team.

So that’s my solution. Move the Face to third base, get J.J. Hardy, let Blalock or Bradley DH and not set foot on the field, and pave the way for columnists to marvel about how much better the pitching is in 2009.

We have Elvis instead of Hardy, but the bottom line is still the same.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 12, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, good stuff

At the time, I thought it was too soon to rile up face by moving him to 3rd, but if you gotta do it sign a short term FA SS like Everett instead of trading valued youth away for Hardy. But, unlike you, I believed Elvis was really close after watching him at Frisco a bunch. I think Newberg did too, but he had fostered a CW that bringing Elvis up midseason would be unhelpful for Elvis and MY. J.D. out-maneuvered everybody on this one.

Poster boy for the fat, dumb and happy club. Put up good numbers in 2005 and 2006, signed a 4yr deal that covers his arb years and first year of FA, puts up a decent 2007 and then sucks ever since then.

His is owed $8.4M for 2010 plus a $500K buyout for 2011. Locking young players up seems like a good idea and generally is. But there is still risk involved.

b.) It seems like I remember discussions a few years back about getting LSB t-shirts to help identify us LSB Ranger addicts from other, less dedicated Ranger “fans.” If I had one, I would wear it there tonight. Was there ever any serious progress on this front?

The team he signs with (after he clears waivers) only pays the league minimum (which technically reduces the amount Milwaukee has to pay).

are a mid payroll (16th highest) team with a payroll 12 million higher than ours. I’m not sure he gets hired by a high payroll team like NYY, NYM, ChiCubs, or the Red Sox. I’m not sure the Brewers are any tougher to win with than an average team.

Its not like he is on the Marlins, Padres, Pirates, or Nats where you just have zero cash to work with.

He has actually done a really good job there

he has made good trades, and was able to stockpile really good young talent. I dont get how releasing a struggling Hall and sending down a struggling Hardy means he won’t win a championship. His team has really under performed this year and he still has them in position to make a playoff run albeit a tough one.

by blueballlefty on Aug 12, 2009 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I don't get

why this is so crazy. Releasing Hall just needed to happen…he was dead roster space. It takes balls to release a guy like that after giving him that contract, but there’s a good chance Jason will have a lot more value for that team going forward. As to the Hardy for Escobar switch, what’s the harm in seeing what a young, stud prospect can do late in the year?

I remember Billy Beane had a day like this a few years ago, either releasing or demoting 4 guys in one day, and it seemed to jumpstart the entire team.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Off this exact topic, but directly relating to our horrid offense:

“[Nick] Johnson continues to get on base almost at will as a Marlin, going 2-for-4 with two walks and three runs scored Tuesday.

Recommendation: He’s hitting .355/.553/.516 in 10 games since the trade from the Nationals, and his presence and patient approach at the top of the Marlins batting order has revitalized the club’s offense. Johnson won’t stay this hot forever, of course, but so long as the rest of the club keeps following his example they’re likely to remain in the playoff chase."

Would’ve been nice…

I think its more the money aspect

he doesn’t get paid for 5 game checks

Although i agree pitchers should be punished more it would be hard to enforce especially with relief pitchers and starters being so different. Maybe make a pitchers suspension only cost 20% of a game check that way you could suspend them long enough to miss 3 or 4 starts and only dock them pay for 3 or 4 games.

by bigsteve on Aug 12, 2009 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, missing one start is still about 1/33rd of their season, which is pretty much the same as a 5 game suspension is for a position player.

If you make a pitcher miss 4 freaking starts that’s a god damn 9th of his season. That’s in freaking sane.

Missing a start is a big deal.

The real problem is that they usually don’t end up missing a start.

Because pitchers work on 5 day schedules, they usually just end up having a start pushed back a day, which still sucks, but isn’t nearly as big of a deal.

If they suspended them 5 games and gave them some sort of clause where they had to actually not make their next start until the rotation turns back over or something, that’d be fair. But I’m super sexy and brainy and even I don’t want to know how complex and annoying the enforcement of that sort of a rule would be.
