Thoughts on Frisco 8/12

Just got back from the RoughRiders game in Tulsa, and thought I'd share a few thoughts. Originally I just intended to jot down a couple of notes on a few players, but ended up with a full scorecard and a page of notes to boot. So, I'll go around the diamond and share some observations on everyone who saw action for Frisco tonight. Click on the linked names for some of the pictures I took this evening.

Martin Perez's line looks a bit ugly: 2.2IP, 8H, 7R, 6ER, 1BB, 3K, 1WP, 1HR. As strange as it may sound, though, it really didn't seem that bad. In the first, it seemed like he was battling nerves a bit, as he forgot to cover first on a grounder to the right side, and walked the next batter. The double that scored the first run was off a good fastball that got fisted into the air and landed near the chalk. A couple of the other hits off of him were rollers through infield holes and another blooper down the right field line. Two singles were well-struck, although not smashes, and the home run was an absolute bomb across the street in left field. Perez throughout his 74 pitches demonstrated shaky fastball command and often fell behind early, throwing first-pitch strikes to only 7 of 18 batters faced. The curve seems like it could be a plus pitch, but I didn't see it enough to get a good feel for it. The change looked good, getting some off-balance swings, but hitters mostly took it. Also, he showed what could turn out to be a decent pickoff move, but still doesn't hold runners that well.

Michael Ballard got hit hard, although the 3 runs in 4.2 innings doesn't necessarily show it. Even the outs were hit hard. Whereas hitters were often late on Perez's fastball, they had no problems getting around on Ballard's, pulling no less than five sharply down the left field line.

Thomas Diamond induced weak contact when he induced any at all. His fastball was up in the zone, and command was shaky tonight.

Behind the plate, Manny Pina looked about as advertised defensively, although there wasn't a lot to do. He was 0-3 throwing runners out, through little fault of his own: two solid jumps off Perez, and one easily caught runner that Lemon dropped the throw on. Seriously, he was out by 10 feet, and the ball just fell out of Lemon's mitt. Pina showed good toughness by getting right back up after being plowed over in the first inning, and showed no ill effects afterward. He went 2-4 with a double, and all but one of his balls was hit hard.

Chad Tracy did not like to take pitches, at least tonight. In all five at bats, he swung at one or both of the first two pitches. Not a lot to show for the night, hitting into a double play and making another very easy by running into a tag.

Ian Kinsler got on the first two times up via a HBP and a walk, but popped out both other times up. He demonstrated a pronounced uppercut, swinging from the heels on the few swings he took. In the field, he moved quite well, showing good mobility in both directions and making a couple of solid plays.

Renny Osuna subbed for Kinsler defensively in the 8th and proceeded to knock a ball down that I thought was easily into right field. Still went for a hit, though. He blistered a double in his only AB, but the sample was too small to get any real idea of his play tonight.

Marcus Lemon didn't look very good at all. In addition to the error, he was well behind every fastball he was thrown. To his credit, he did manage to foul a few off in his last AB, drawing a walk to start the 9th inning rally. He may have been the victim of a bad call in the 2nd, when the pitcher appeared to be bobbling the feed from the second baseman when he crossed the bag. A safe call would have brought Kinsler up with two on and one out.

Adam Fox played third, and showed decent defensive skills to go along with a 3-4 night at the plate, driving in two and scoring two. The home run cleared the left-center fence by 5 or 6 feet.

Johnny Whittleman was the DH, and took no less than the first two pitches in all 5 PAs. Some weak contact early in the game, along with a questionable CS, but a hard double in the 9th.

Steve Murphy in left was rather average. Nothing outstanding at the plate; in the field, he made a nice catch toward the line, but also seemed to have some problems digging another ball out of the corner, though no runners advanced because of it.

Craig Gentry had an overall forgettable night, partially due to bad luck. Nothing bad, but not one to remember either. With two one and none out in the 9th, he blistered a ball up the middle that kicked off the pitcher's foot and right to the first baseman. If that ball goes up the middle, it's a two run single and a runner's on first with none out down 4, instead of a runner on third with one out down 5.

Mitch Moreland showed something by making adjustments in-game. After walking his first time up, he swung over a change and rolled another trying to pull it. His next AB, though, he waited on it and drove one well out to left. The double in the 9th was hard-hit as well, to the right-center gap.

Overall, it was a very lackluster game from a Frisco perspective until the final half inning. I look forward to seeing all of these players again at some point, and hope to see improvements!

My day with Martin

obviously didnt turn out to well and as i was writing this report the fucking computer restarted so im re-writing this again from the notes (and they were extensive) from the game

Here are some non-related martin notes related to the frisco bats from what i saw (only stayed like the 1st 5 innings which took like a total of about 2 hours, long ass game. Ian was hit by a pitch 3 pitches into the game, his next ab a fastball was blown past him but other then that was able to work a walk. His 3rd ab he came up with runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and you could tell he wanted to kill the ball, he got a 2-0 count and just missed one but fouled it and the next pitch was a lazy pop up to short.

Moreland from what I saw displayed good patience the 1st ab (though the starting pitcher had crappy command, his stats looked nice on the season but he’s way to wild and seemed to only control his changeup) his 2nd ab struck out on i think 4 pitches.

Pina was hitting the ball nice his 1st 2 trips to the plate and shouldve had a runner thrown out if not for Lemon dropping an easy 3rd out which was inexcusable.

Now onto the Perez stuff:
I was sorta charting his pitches as I tracked what type of pitch (i think) he was throwing and whether or not it was a strike or ball

1st inning:
1st batter saw a fastball for a ball followed by 2 strikes for fastballs then another fastball for a ball then a foul then the count went full before grounding to the 1st baseman but Martin wasnt off the mound until he realized he needed to run to cover 1st and by then it was to late and the guy reached 1st, I feel this was a giant reason why he had such a bad day since he got off to such a terrible start.
Next batter saw a changeup for a ball followed by 3 fastballs for balls leading to a 4 pitch walk, I thought the last 3 pitches were all low but very close to strikes.
Next guy hits a foul then lines out to left field (one of the few legitimately hard hit balls off perez all day)
Next guy sees a ball bounce into the dirt then a changeup for a strike then he drops a curve down on him and perez tries an 0-2 change on him but the guy hits a bloop down the right field line (oppo field) that ties the game 1-1 but it was really nicely placed, over the 1st basemans head but to far for the right fielder so he was able to get a double, not hard hit at all.
Next batter after seeing 3 fastballs K’s swinging on another fastball, next guy gets up 2-1 (all fastballs) before hitting a weak single just past the outstretched glove of ian kinsler (his defense didnt look completely up to par like it normally does) and it plates 2. 3 fastballs later Perez gets his 2nd K on a swinging strike. 1st inning done 3 runs 29 pitches

2nd inning:
starts off with a single on the 1st pitch, then fastball for a strike, fastball ball, changeup for a swinging strike (his best pitch by far all night) but the guy takes 2nd on the play got a great jump and then perez throws a wild pitch (not sure if pina couldve blocked it but it wasnt a good pitch on perez’s behalf)
so the guys on 3rd and next pitch guy grounds to 3rd. stupidly whittleman thinks the guy is to far off 3rd and attempts to tag him instead of getting the easy out at 1st, instead guy is safe on 3rd so guys at corner 0 outs.
Perez then goes fastball for a foul, fastball ball and changeup which is grounded into hole for lemon only play is force at 2nd which he converts run scores (4-2 drillers) Next batter is a change for ball, fastball strike, fastball ball (guy steals on perez) then he induces a pop fly, 3 pitches later (1 curve, which i didnt see many of and a changeup) the guy pops to short to end the inning. 2 innings 48 pitches

3rd inning
To start the inning he throws 3 fastballs 2-1 count before the guy grounds to 3rd. Then it’s again getting behind in count because cant locate fastball 3-1 guy rips a single inbetween 3rd and short. Next batter it’s change up then either curve or change follwed by a fastball that was absolutely walloped to left field, that thing might still be going for homer (6-2 drillers)
Next batter gets ahead again 3-1 hits another weak single up the middle
followed by fastball ball, curveball strike, fastball ball then 2 fastballs in a row for swings and misses for his 3rd and final K, on the strikeout Pina had the guy nailed by 10 feet but lemon dropped the ball, idk how this happend because i couldve caught the ball, dont know if it was laziness or sheer surprise this runner could seriously be this slow but he dropped it and perez never escaped the 3rd.
His final batter he started with a changeup for a strike then a bloop hit that either hit the line or was right next to it but Ian was trying to chase it down and tried a sliding grab but failed to get to it as Tracy and the rf (moreland?) were near it too but again a perfectly placed ball that scored another run and perez was run after 73 (by my count) pitches

final line 2.2 7 er 8 hits 3 k’s (all his k’s were on swings and misses, think he had at least 7 swings and misses total maybe more but i was keeping pretty close track)

I really dont think he was hit anywhere close to what his line suggests, I’d say 4 balls were hit hard including the homerun, most of the hits were bloops or balls that found holes. His changeup was his best pitch and looked excellent at times completely fooling hitters. He just couldnt throw fastballs for strikes and most of them were up in the zone too.

My favorite part of the night was when me and my friend were wanting to leave I wanted to go talk to one of the scouts who had a radar gun because the stadium didnt have one so I just saw this tall guy in a black shirt that had one and sat next to him so I could know how hard Perez was throwing. He said it was ranging between 91-96, we got to talking for a couple minutes and I asked what team he scouts for, he says he’s a player (took me a coupld times to understand what he said, thought he said he was a blair, didnt know what the fuck that meant) then I get what he’s saying and notices he looks familiar and take a shot in the dark and say, “You’re blake beavan” and it was!

I was just shocked that he was up in the stands, plus because he looks 5 years older then me (im 21 a year older then him, of course i look like im 17) but we got to talking about martin, and himself. I asked about michael main, he seemed to know what we knew, he was sent home with a virus. Said he knew a lot of guys just because they hang out in Spring training, I asked how hard he threw in high school he said 95-97 and now it’s high 80’s early 90’s about 91-92 topping off. I was curious if he thought he’d ever get it back but he didnt think so.

Real nice guy though. But pretty much told him was great to meet him wished him luck told him how young he was for the league and went on my way. All in all, it wasnt the best night but I was only going to be watching the Rangers if I didnt go, now I can at least say I saw Perez’s AA debut (though it wasnt pretty)

good stuff

The rough riders usually have a starting pitcher charting pitches between starts. Kiker does it more than the others from what I’ve seen (and also appears to have the most fun with it)

It's the 3rd and 4th pitchers in the rotation who generally chart

i.e. two of them chart each game, and they always do it for two days, starting on the second game after they start.

Hickory has three charting pitchers. I think because they have a guy manning a spray chart as well.

good to know

most riders games i go to its kiker and another pitcher, sometimes beavan does it but usually by himself from what ive seen.
wasnt sure if there was a pattern to it or not.

It seems like Wilmer Font

holds the gun every game he’s not pitching in (in Hickory). I’m usually sitting within spitting distance but I’m too chicken shit to give him anything more than a head nod.

Honestly

I really don’t care about Perez getting shellacked his first start in AA at his age. In the scheme of things, if he spends all of next year in AA he is still way ahead of the game.

Kinsler showing nothing and being guaranteed a callup after one more game concerns me though.

I had forgotten this...

As I recall, when Kinsler had the breakout year in low A-ball, and was hitting over .400 a couple of months into the season, he himself attributed his improved batting average to the fact that he was no longer trying to hit home runs (but merely to hit doubles). Apparently, he has forgotten that too.

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

Sabre's been around long enough...

it makes you wonder why teams don’t put every player in the org thru a sabre familiarization class once a year in order to enhance batters’ approaches. The Rangers could probably get Newberg and Meno to do it for free if they pay the freight for a working vacation during Spring Training.

That is a helluva good idea...

Maybe this is one of those untapped areas that we could get ahead of the curve on.

Fair enough.

Overall, I do appreciate Jamey’s reports ~ but I’ve been mystified by his occasional jabs at saberstuff. (The fact that the NMLR forum often sees more than its share of knee-jerk dismissals of statistics has probably shaped my take, as well.) If there’s background I’m missing, that would help explain it…

Unfortunately, some saber types

are just as zealous in dismissing those who aren’t up to their armpits in stats. Hopefully most of us are in the middle, as I think Jamey strives to be.

yea, i agree 100 percent, I love to read up on all the stats

but i hate when people get so knee deep in them that they have to constantly dismiss anyone who doesnt stick to them at all times. Its a great foundation for understanding the game, but like almost any science, it doesnt encompass everything involved in an organic, complicated field of study.

Stat do not tell the whole story, but they do paint quite good pictures

It is perfectly fine to question a stat’s validity if there is a sound system of argument and logic behind the question. However, one cannot dismiss a stat because it does not coincide with their own version of reality while failing to provide a convincing rebuttal (i.e. my eyes tells me something and no stat can say otherwise). This occurs sometimes. On the other hand, it is also dangerous to stick strictly by stats without understanding what they represent.

Essentially, we do not argue over the stat itself, we argue over the logic behind the creation of the stat.

57.1% ground balls
14.3% outfield fly
14.3% Line drives
14.3% popups
BABIP: 0.538
16.67% K
5.56% Walk
26.3% Left on Base

He had a sparkling 0-5 night. but he got his 2 days of rehab in. Time to plug him in to the leadoff spot.
