Happy Happy, indeed
I had the flu way before having the flu was cool
Joy, Joy.
That was a lot of fun to watch, even with the Cleveland feed.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Am I crazy?
I thought the DET/BOS score was reported 3-0 with back to back HRs in teh 7th (one by Gerald Laird). SI says 2-0. MLB says 2-0, but with 2 runs scored in the 7th (so it should be 3-0). Did I just hear wrong?
Gerald Laird most defnitely did NOT homer in the 7th.
I happened to turn it on for the 7th and Rayburn homered then OMFT popped up to the warning track.

it did say that on Gameday for a second, it was really odd as it said Laird hit a Homer but was out
very confusing

Forgot we played early today, but wouldn't have been able to watch anyhow.
But it looks like this Neftali Feliz guy is gonna be good.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I've been in a meeting all day and just checked the box
Was Feliz’s performance as awesome as his line of 6 faced, 6 retired, 5 on Ks sounds?

Yes. Absolutely.

No points for guessing whose record.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Shared Record Actually...
Nolan is the obvious one, if you didn’t watch the game today, you’ll never guess who else holds it.
That was my point.
“Tied” indicates “shared,” eh? And it was Ryan’s record…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Right, but
What I meant was it was already a shared record before Feliz tied it. He is now the 3rd Ranger to accomplish the feat.

If so, I've missed it.
Who’s the third guy?
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Weird
The MLB.com site for the Rangers lists the following record:
Most Consecutive Strikeouts — 8 Dave Hostetler April 17-21, 1983
I'd imagine that's strikeouts in consecutive ABs by a batter.
We’re looking for consecutive strikeouts recorded by a pitcher.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Ah...that makes more sense...
but it also means that I have no clue as to the mythical third record holder.
I'm guessing it was this year.
The online record books wouldn’t have been updated yet.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
they said it in the broadcast.
looking at the gamelog.. probably somewhere in june 28-30 or april 11-19, but I don’t care enough to go into the specific games and find out for sure.
the preceding post was a great success.
woops I had 5 in a row in my head

Jennings left the game April 11 after givin up a walk.

yeah i went ahead and went into the play by play and thats not it
well i guarantee you they said on the broadcast it was jennings, it was discussed in the GDT.
no idea when now.
the preceding post was a great success.
I believe you.
I’m just not sure they got it right on the broadcast. There doesn’t seem to be another stretch in his time with the Rangers that would meet the criteria…
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
Just listened to that part of the game..
They said Jennings did it over 3 appearances this year but gave no further info.
So yes, it actually does sound like they are mistaken.
Hmm, I’m kind of glad to get his name away from Feliz then. If we are right.
the preceding post was a great success.
Well, Jennings did have six in a row
June 29 to July 3. But those don’t connect to Ks on June 28 or July 5. Unless Baseball Reference’s play-by-play records are wrong, I don’t see any other stretches it could be this season. I think they were wrong on the broadcast.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).
I just checked,
and unless I’m missing something, I don’t see when that could have happened. I’m fairly sure it’s not during either of those two stretches.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: "Can't take a fucking to save their lives" (lisa w, 2009).

Feldman's K/9 is now up to 4.87
And its at 6.41 since the AS Break. Like I’ve been saying, having a low K rate on the season doesn’t mean he can’t improve on it for the future. I don’t think he deserves to win it, but it would be cool to see Feldman get some Cy Young love if he keeps up with the wins.

I don't hate Feldman
And as I’ve pointed out, I was one of the few people in the ‘07-’08 offseason who wasn’t demanding he be dropped from the 40 man roster.
But he is what he is, a back of the rotation starter, not a Cy Young candidate or someone who is one of the 10-15 best pitchers in the A.L. this year.

How far do yo uexplore that though?
If you can package him for an ace, you’re talking about packaging him with some more talent off your Major League team. If the other team is rebuilding, they aren’t going to value a guy with 3 years of service time that highly. So how much of your ML team are you going to be willing to get rid of to try and upgrade a playoff rotation (since RA isn’t much of a problem for the Rangers anymore).
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
What do you think a package...
like Feldman, Murphy, Davis and one of the catchers could bring back this off-season? I’m sure many teams would try to substitute Cruz for Murphy or Smoak for Davis. I would avoid that unless it meant bringing back a true TORP. Which it might.
The only way I think the Rangers should try to deal Feldman is if it was part of a big package for a true ace. He will be too valuble as a back of the rotation type guy on this staff in the next few years otherwise.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Why?
He’s good. The Rangers have quality depth at SP for the first time in recent memory, but it’s not like they can roll out Millwood and a bunch of young guys out there and hope to contend in 2010. You can’t pin your hopes on a resurrected Ben Sheets that is not even part of this organization yet, either.
What would you like them to trade Feldman for? A bat? You could be taking your thumb out of one hole just to put it in another. Don’t see the point. Trade him for a bona fide TORP? At what cost?
I think they’re better off sticking with him. The guy can fucking pitch, and is clearly able to make adjustments.
by Black Francis on Aug 13, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't know...
I like Feldman a lot, but if you can put him as one of the main pieces in a package to get a true ace then you have to consider it imo.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Well it depends on the package and what they would be getting back.
It’s not like I’m married to the guy or anything.
by Black Francis on Aug 13, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
that’s the issue. If you buy the premise that you can get a big arm or even an impact bat, it is probably worth doing. I’m just not sure I buy the premise that Scott Feldman + some package of Tier 3 prospects gets you an impact bat or a Front of the rotation arm.
I suspect that he has more value in our rotation than he has trade value, but I guess it doesn’t hurt to dangle him and see if some GM really overvalues him.

I tend not to believe
that you receive an impact player in return. I suspect he’s worth more as a back rotation guy who eats innings than whatever we get in return, but maybe I’m wrong.

Feldman sorta reminds of Esteban Loaiza
sucked at first, and now, after adding a cutter to his repertoire, he’s having a nice run of success. Will hitters figure him out like they did with Loaiza? Chances are that they will.
Hope I’m wrong, though.
Alma para conquistarte, corazón para quererte, y vida para vivirla junto a ti.
I remember that lonely time to be a Feldman fan when you were a supporter
But still, keep downplaying what Feldman has managed to do this year and you’re going to end up having to make an “I was wrong” post. He is far from being one of those “He is what he is” guys. He’s been starting for 2 years, work his ass off, and keeps showing off these great changes he’s made as a pitcher. I don’t see how a 26 year old who’s been starting for 2 years (with plenty of success in that 2nd season) can be labeled like some decent veteran.
The Cy Young thing isn’t so much that he is fully deserving of it, but I do think it would be a nice to see him get some more credit for the great work he’s been doing.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Well, you're talking about two entirely seperate issues here.
He absolutely does not need to be getting an Cy Young love. That’s… well, I’m trying to insult people less, so I won’t say how I feel about that idea.
But Feldman is a really impressive player who’s made admirable strides as a pitcher and definitely deserves some love for what he’s been able to accomplish. He’s turned himself into a damn fine mid-rotation pitcher, one who I think will be a key piece for us going forward. You can never have enough LAIE’s, and he might even prove to be a bit better than a LAIE going forward if he continues to improve.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
by thedirkatron on Aug 13, 2009 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions
But this is MLB 2009.
They love the out of no where kid who over comes (see Hamilton 2008), and he has numbers to back it up (12 wins). A Ranger with 12 wins on Aug. 13 is a bon a vide ace these days. They don’t understand the defense that backs him up. Quoting the devil (ESPN) “This isn’t your fathers’ Rangers.” He’ll get some notice, but not enough to make a difference. Unless he goes 6-0 the rest of the year and shuts out 4 games.
Feldman's cutter
Getting to the fun stuff, Scott Feldman’s cutter has been worth 22.6 runs, making it the third-most effective offering in baseball among starting pitchers. The only pitch that has been more effective has been Tim Lincecum’s change-up at a ridiculous 28.2 runs, and Clayton Kershaw’s fastball, at 23.5 runs. What makes this development a little more interesting is that Feldman just started using the pitch a year ago — throwing it 13.4% of the time. He’s honed his craft and is now throwing the pitch 30.4% of the time. Only three other starting pitchers throw the cutter more often, and those pitchers are Brian Bannister, Doug Davis and Roy Halladay.
- From the Evolution of Scott Feldman
Similar to a couple years ago. I just have a really hard time not holding on to Feldman (unless we can get a king’s ransom for him).
more like his changeup and curve
i dont think anyone has even hit either of those into fair play. His FB sets that up of course.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Exactly
Pitch values:
Fastball – 0.4 runs above average, or 0.63 runs/100 thrown.
Curve – 0.6 runs above average, or a crazy 6.56 runs/100 thrown.
Change – 1.0 runs above average, or an insane 16.35 runs/100 thrown.
Among all MLB pitchers, the change ranks third behind Damaso Marte’s 23.38 and Jose Valverde’s 16.35. The curve ranks 13th.
Wow.

They are good pitches with nice movement no doubt, but they are a lot harder to hit after you just saw a 101 mph fastball.

but again, that just kind of proves 101 FBs are special, but not unhittable… its when you throw the offspeed stuff off that.

His current stats
show a 4th starter on a good run (by FIP – 4.48, xFIP – 4.83, and tRA – 5.55) aided a bit by a slightly high strand rate and low BaBIP. Feldman has been terrific this year, and I would love to see him as the team’s 3rd or 4th starter next year, but it is certainly not out of line for Adam to call him a back of the rotation starter.

Whatever
he’s having a very nice year, but I think it’s pretty foolish to keep thinking he’s suddenly going to strike out more batters. He very well could be a 3rd starter going forward without striking a lot of guys out but any talk of Cy Young votes is still pretty ridiculous.
I’m very glad he’s doing what he’s doing, and I’ll be very glad if he’s doing it next year, too. I no one is signed or traded for he’s the default 2nd starter next spring behind Millwood. I’d rather see him as the 3rd or 4th.

Crazy Season
The Rangers hold a major league team, and one that had been playing reasonably well since the ASB to 6 runs in 3 games and I don’t think anything of it. I have become so accustomed to the Rangers playing good defense behind good pitching that it has become expected for them to do that. A couple of years ago they would have given up 6 runs to Cleveland in 1 inning. This is so much better.
Think about this
CLE scores 5 runs in the 3rd inning of the first game and 1 run in the 1st inning of the third game. That was it for the #5 offense in the AL.

Pitching
The Rotation as currently constituted:

Of course it’s only August, but if the Rangers make the playoffs I have to say I’m pretty comfortable with that. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the interim and which four they ultimately go with.
Nippert is on shakey ground now.
I don’t think he would be in a playoff rotation.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland -Tom Grieve Rangers Minor League Player of the Year
Martin Perez - Nolan Ryan Rangers Minor League Pitcher of the Year
I like Nippert in long relief
He’s a nice emergency option, and good for picking up the 5th starter on those down days.
Spot starts, ok.
If he could be consistent with his stuff, he’d be a nice contender for a spot — but he’s so on again, off again that it’s hard to be confident when he’s out there.
Agreed on the rotation part
I don’t know if he’s really on shakey ground now. He’s got a great opportunity to prove himself in the rotation now with no one really challenging him for that spot and injuries taking out the other options.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

All the young guys are.
And I include Nippert in that group based on experience.
I think they’ll go with the hotter hands in spots three and four and drop the odd man to the pen. Could be Holland just as easily asas Nippert, provided Nippert can throw more innings by then. Holland’s had 2 of his last three starts go very well but that’s just two of the last three. Can’t really say I have any idea which one would be dropped right now.

Call me crazy but I would rather leave him in the 5 hole for at least the Boston series and not mess with him. Hank Blalock sucks...
…and if you can’t see that you are BLIND.
Yeah he’s had some big hits but most of the time he has been utterly horrible. You bitch and bitch about Chris Davis, but the fact is he hit the hell out of the ball last year in the minors and the majors, and after struggling mightily he is again hitting the hell out of the ball and probably ready to come back. Believe me, it would not take much to be a better hitter than Hank Blalock. The motherfucker swings at everything and swings as hard as he can whether it’s down the middle or a foot outside and high.
He sucks. There is no defense for that hacking piece of shit. He’d probably swing at a ball that ended up grazing his nose. Worthless.

Average
plus burning a lot of innings is much better than average. That’s pretty much a #3 starter in the bigs. If you can have that as your 4th or 5th starter, you definitely got a rotation working.
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland
Yep
According to this, a tRA+ of 95-106 is about what a #3 starter should put up. Feldman’s 101 is pretty much as average as you can get, but there is something to be said for that. He’s a nice, healthy guy to have around to fill out the rotation, especially if we can slot 3 guys who are even better in front of him one of these days.
I just get tired of people making him out to be some sort of savant, insisting he’s “Roy Halladay lite” or the “MUPRITHOFTF”. He’s a nice, almost perfectly average mid-rotation pitcher, whom people happen to be in love with because… well… I guess we haven’t seen a reliable mid-roto guy around here since Rick Helling.

Well,
ever since I’ve been following the Rangers on websites, every time every averageish player strings together some months of much better than average results, the cry goes out to lock them down long term. Its usually nonsense of course. A lot of fans just want to buy high and sell low.

I can’t think of any examples besides Drese, I guess?

Hmmm... Fangraphs has his tRA at 5.55.
Wonder what the difference is.
Fangraphs just got tRA a day or two ago, so maybe their formula isn’t quite right yet?

Yeah
From their announcment:
There are a couple things which are different between the StatCorner version of tRA and the version implemented on FanGraphs. The main difference is we’re using Baseball Info Solutions batted ball stats instead of Gameday batted ball stats. The other difference, though probably not as major is we’re using different park factors.
tRA will not be available in the leaderboards or team pages until this winter most likely because it’s going to take a minor overhaul to the code in order to handle the park adjustments.
Actually, I didn’t even see that they had it up there till just now. They’ve got it socked away under “batted ball” on the player pages for some reason.

Fangraphs
Sounds like their version might be better.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Well, once they get it perfected, anyway.
Too bad it’s apparently going to take them till the winter to do that.

The marlins really need to be moved.
not a single human in sight on a HR ball to left field for a team thats doing pretty well and is in the wild card chase?
the preceding post was a great success.
Yet another one from the list of sucky pitchers who've owned us this year.

6 innings 2 runs with 4 ks isn't really "owning"
bad pitchers do that to good offenses literally every night somewhere in the mlb.
the preceding post was a great success.
We're not a good offense though.

Thye have a pretty good chance to be above average the rest of the way with hammy
Starting to hit and everyone getting healthy.
I don’t think its fair to just expect the offense to be one of the best few in baseball as it was last year. Its not like they’ve been the worst in the mlb, they’ve just been a bit below average and struggling to get on base. The OBP isn’t going to suddenly get great, but there is enough average/power talent to be respectable.
I’d like them to average a 9-0 score every night but it ain’t happening. On the whole the team has performed very well, why get caught up too much on the one area thats struggling?
the preceding post was a great success.
Well that one area...
…has probably been a little worse than you’re saying. They themselves have admitted playing down to the level of competition, but the numbers are what they were: the pitching and defense have been there just about all year. If the offense were average they’d have the best team in the AL.

.335 wOBA, 4.8 R/gm
is not league average?
Rangers rank 7th (tied with TOR) and 8th out of 14 in each of those categories. Our offense hasn’t performed as expected, but almost half of the teams in the AL have an equal or worse offense.

CJ says "Relax"
Thank God
he got his 2 days of rehab and his 0 fer 7 in. Obviously they need to rush him up to the majors where he is certain to help the team.

They shouldn't bring him up until he remembers that center field and right field exist too.
