Seeing that piece on John Blake reminded me of an anecdote I heard Richard Justice tell on the radio a month or so ago…
He was talking about what a great job the Rangers have done in rebuilding, and how Nolan and JD have really turned things around, done great work in the front office, behind the scenes, in the minors, etc. etc. etc.
And he talked about all the great hires the Rangers have made on the business side of things in the front office, and how having Nolan as president helps because, after all, who wants to say “no” to Nolan Ryan?
Anyway, the hosts of the show said, well, so it is Nolan’s cachet getting people to join the Rangers organization?
And Justice said that one of the people he talked to, who left the Red Sox to join the Rangers, told him it was the money…that they made him a financial offer he couldn’t refuse.
I have to assume that is John Blake, because I don’t know anyone else who recently left the Red Sox to join the Rangers.
But it led me to wonder…if the Rangers are really in such dire financial straits, would they be money-whipping p.r. guys?

The Cardinals are doing it right
They march every elementary school kid across the field before the game for having good grades or selling the highest number of candles, or to sign the National Anthem. Then during the 7th inning stretch, a choir group sings God Bless America.
The kids are then hooked, reflecting on their childhood memories singing, walking at Busch Stadium. As they grow into adults, they are die-hard fans. And their kids follow the same routine…and they all wear red.
It pretty interesting, but really annoying if your not a big Cardinals fan.

Matthew Purke, the Rangers first pick [14th overall] is in town to have his physical but his signing is not imminent. The Rangers wanted him to get the physical out of the way because Monday is the signing deadline and the negotiations could go right down to the final hour
As far as the negotiations, general manager Jon Daniels said, "They are where you would expect them to be. We still have a gap, a divide, to bridge. That’s not unusual three days before the deadline. They have been amicable discussions.
“He agreed to submit to the physical and get that completed just to get it behind us so we can focus on negotiations. We don’t want any hurdles if we negotiate late.”
Both Blake Beavan, the Rangers No. 1 pick in 2007, and Justin Smoak from last season signed on the deadline day. If Purke doesn’t sign by Monday, he will attend TCU.
