eddie

eddie needs to be DFA, i was at the game tonight, as soon as i saw that eddie was coming is, i was like oh no. i had a feeling we were in touble. when the count went to 3-1, i was like oh crap, we’re about to have a tied game.

very bad game to blow, almost thougt david murphy caught the ball in the 9th and the game was over on the throw out at home with a double play, which would have been a classic play, it only saved the game for a short while,

hank had a horrible game 0-4 4Ks,

It'd be real nice if

our left handed specialist could actually get lefties out. Lefties hitting .356/.431/.511 is enough reason to DFA him.

There is no way they bounce back fully from this the next two games. They didn’t even bounce back from the Oakland loss right away. This one is much worse.

This time to provide a rebound after the worst meltdown of the year. He handled the pressure well last time, we need him to do it again.

This could be a season-killer if they can’t come right back from this.

Are only vaguely aware that I’m into baseball and the Rangers, and those that know think it’s an internet diversion. Plus I’m on the fringe of the geriatric crowd – I’ll talk about Mike Young returning to goodness, and they ask if I caught an organ concert at a big church in Fort Worth. Or talk politics.

But they are always considerate – at night, they’ll check to see if there is a Ranger game before taking off on a different subject.

Doesn't it piss you off?

Like, to a maximum level?! I’ve watched every game this year, followed the team in spring training, and have been a fan for a long time. I know this team like the back of my hand. So when some dipshit who has recently jumped on the bandwagon and decided to watch a game or two decides to start talking shit it makes me mad. Really fucking mad, friends or not I’m ready to kick their ass. I’ve invested a lot in this team so when some asshat does that? Yeah, maybe I’m too intense with this stuff and I’ve been drinking a little too after tonight’s loss, but damnit this kind of shit makes me irate. Here in the next few years when we’re owning the division and kicking serious ass in the playoffs those same dickfucks are going to be saying “Go Rangers!” and that shit seriously makes me angry. Fuckin bandwagon pieces of shit. Yeah, I know a lot of people like this.

It is more than

simply a game, it was a game against the team leading you by half a game in the wild card in the second half of august. It was a game that you were leading 2-0 and 4-2 in the ninth. It was a game that happened on the night that your division rivals finally lost to a bad team. this was more than a simple loss.

This was the game in the series I most thought we would lose.

And Millwood looked a lot like I expected he would, but miraculously escaped unscatched prior to the highly questionable Guardado move.

But good god, from 1 out from a win to down 4 runs with the closer on the mound? Freaking brutal. Yes it happens, and its brutal those times too.

Just don’t get swept. Please please don’t get swept.

My three goats for the game:

1. Eddie Eddie Eddie. The guy has no business pitching in a close game.
2. Ron Washington for putting Eddie into the game. Does Eddie have dirty pitchers of Ron? That’s the only explanation I have.
3. Frankie Francisco – lazy butt can’t warm up in the bullpen before coming into the game. So he grooves a fat, lazy 91 mph fast ball down the middle of the plate for Ortiz.

However … I’m maturing. The only things I destroyed in the house were easily replaceable items. :)

Warm fuzzy feelings

and the fact that he keeps things loose are great. But ask the guys if winning matters? If it does then Guardado has to be DFA’d. You can’t blow this game. He had no business pitching in this game. Frankie melted down but at least he still has some talent left. Eddie doesn’t and it’s time to let go. If they finish one game out of the race thing their collective good feelings about great guy Eddie are going to be so warm?

Look on the bright side!!!

This should make Frankie unavailable for tomorrow….Holland goes 8 and leaves with a 4-1 lead and Ron is forced to bring his best bull pen arm, Feliz into the game for the ninth. Feliz strikes out the side and remains the closer for the rest of the season.

A silver lining?

The rangers never played particularly well the whole way through. So as crappy a loss as it is, it’s not like it was a masterpiece blown at the end. Frank doing that after a 8 IP, 2 H, 10 K outing by the starter would kill me.

I hear you

I’m just telling myself, I’m mad only because I actually care about this team this season. They’re still in contention, and that’s a good thing. It’s been nice to feel good about the Rangers this season after the past decade. One aspect of being a fan is learning how to deal with these kinds of losses (or learning that I will never be able to deal with these kinds of losses.).

by Kool Hand on Aug 14, 2009 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

It is about the moment.

When you have Victor Martinez up, 2 strikes on him, a half game out in the wild card, angels already lost. It does not matter what your stats have been up to this point, I don’t care if you have saved 100 games strait with 300k’s in a row. This is the one that matters. You can’t go quote your fucking FIP to Victor and have him get called out, you have to get the fucking job done.

You build 1000 bridges and suck 1 dick, you are not a bridge builder, you are a cocksucker.

Would you accept it if you were the Manager of this team and Frankie walked off and said “It happens, pound some budwiser and lets get um tomorrow.” No. You would say, we’re gonna try and get um tomorrow, but not your fat chair throwing ass you son of a bitch, pack your shit and go ahead CC Eddie G on this little informational meeting right here. This was eerily reminiscent of C.J.’s Easter Day meltdown, giving up 6 runs in a save situation.

If Frankie can’t be the closer because someone who has a meltdown like that isn’t closer material, then C.J. can’t be the closer either, can he?

Well

That game was with the Rangers farther out of first in the division, and looking a lot worse than they are looking right now.

Maybe it is easier for me because I had sort of accepted the fact about a month ago that the team wasn’t going to make the playoffs this year, but was probably going to hang around and play some meaningful games late and continue the building towards 2010.

I look at this team and I see Elvis and Josh and Kinsler and Cruz, and Feliz and Holland and Hunter and Wilson and Frankie, and the guys in the minors, and I see a good core of talent that is going through some growing pains right now, but that you can reasonably believe can use this season as a learning experience and something to use as a springboard towards being a dominant force for the next half-decade.

So to me, this season as a whole has been a windfall. This loss sucks, but we lost to a damn good team and are still in the hunt. I still feel good about things long-term.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 14, 2009 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Well that doesn't really answer either of my questions

But there are a lot of people here that believe the season isn’t over, so they might get a tad bit more emotional and take the loss a little harder than you and others that think we won’t make it.

by behindthebag on Aug 14, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I understand being emotional

I don’t understand crapping all over a guy who has been one of your best pitchers this year, and has been a big reason why the team is in the position we’re in. It isn’t like Frank Francisco is Hank F. Blalock.

People are talking about how shitty he is and he’s not a real closer because real closers don’t melt down like that. His velocity is way off. Given that, I suspect he wasn’t right physically. Either that, or he has some mental block that has just hit him that makes him incapable of pitching at full strength in this situation. I doubt it is the latter.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 14, 2009 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions

If he wasn't right physically.

Wash should have known that. This isn’t the Royals we played tonight, it’s the fucking Boston Red Sox. If your closer can’t do it, don’t send him out there and just pray he makes it through.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. by Aqua on Aug 14, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

I don’t know if Wash knew before the game.

I don’t know if Frankie knew before the game. It may be one of those situations where he had trouble getting loose.

And if not Frankie in that situation, then who?

C.J. for two innings, because you get a call from Andy Hawkins saying that Frankie is having trouble getting loose and doesn’t have his “A” stuff?

Feliz wasn’t going to be available.

That leaves you with Jason Jennings or Doug Mathis.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 14, 2009 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

You know how I feel about Jennings.

If Frankie can’t get it going, put in Asian Kid. I’m at least comfortable with the idea of him getting outs.

I just have this feeling that Wash is so blindly loyal to his players that if he did know FF didn’t have it, he would still go with him because he is the closer and that’s what closers do. He would take the chance of a trainwreck not to mess with FF’s psyche.

Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. by Aqua on Aug 14, 2009 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions

You know?

He might.

He might be willing to tell Frankie, you’re my closer, and I’d rather have you in there at 90% than any other pitcher in baseball at 100%, and I believe in you, so go out there and close it out.

And it may very well be the wrong decision, although when the other choice is Mathis, I’m not so sure that’s the case.

It is maddening. But it is also part of the reason he inspires such loyalty.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 15, 2009 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

You're arguing for Wash's loyalty?

What happened to playing the hot hand?

The bit about roles should have died months ago. His refusal to manage based off of situational issues has cost this team wins, but perhaps his work with Tiny E and others, defensively, cancels that out. But, still, I’m not making this argument after what has happened tonight.

I just fear that the damage may already be done.

FX2 had this year and there was one common component. Frankie never threw his splitter in either game. I was screaming at the TV during the Victor Martinez at bat for him to throw the split finger pitch. Anybody have a clue as to why he doesn’t use it in some games? I think it may be his most effective offering.

The weird thing about this team

Every time it looks like they are about to get on a roll, they fall on their faces (or crap the bed, as the Outlaw would say).

Every time it looks like they’ve been kicked in the balls and will curl up and die, they go out there and gut out a couple of wins.

some things that may have already been addressed

What was Frankies velocity tonight? It seems to be down a bit.

Hank is doing a pretty good imitation of CD. Even though Hank has been good defensively, I do miss CD’s stretches. (That has probably cost the Rangers 3-4 outs since CD was sent down.)

If the Rangers remain in contention for the playoffs come Aug 30-31, there may be ai ntereting roster move or 2 to make players eligible for the playoffs.

Ths bullpen coul duse a true LOOGY.

Hank apparently likes to admire strikes as they pass by but has some serious anger towards the pitches out of the strike zone…especially the ones in the dirt….. “Pitch bad! No like! Must hurt!”

God this game was so deflating.

I was at Mattito’s in Dallas from the fourth inning on, people were actually interested in the game being shown on the TVs, those who were still there in the ninth went nuts when Young nailed that guy at the plate, but then silence a few batters later.

We had a great shot at being .5 a game up in the WC and we lost it. We weren’t supposed to win against Lester but we had them right there with one strike left to live. Then Frankie finished his meltdown and it was gone.

9:47: Regarding catching situation. Is Rod Barajas an option? Or do you go more minor than that. Somebody like Henry Blanco, Josh Bard, Wil Nieves or Chris Coste? Dare I say this: Do you make an inquiry on one Ivan Rodriguez?

Can Salty make it to Sept 1? If not, is Max really an option? I have no problem going with TT for the rest of the season but he would need some days off. Frostad or Richardson? Seems like a push to me.

Big picture

Ya, this game sucks. Nothing like making your dad watch the game after you convince him that this game is the first real meaningful ranger game over the past five years.

In the end though, the Rangers have very little chance at winning the world series this year and honestly anything less than a world title is a disappointment to fans. We can say that all we want is playoffs, but we are going to get killed in the playoffs if we make it and the fans will be disappointed.

What we can all agree on is that the Rangers have a much better chance at winning the world series in the years to come. And if that is the real goal, then this game really means nothing. The young guys are playing better than anyone could imagine and thats all we should be worried about. We can celebrate the wins but we shouldnt go crazy when stuff like this happens. It sucks, but overall, tonight’s game is merely a blip in a much larger scheme

by nathanbaum09 on Aug 14, 2009 11:43 PM CDT reply actions

I would not be disappointed if we made the playoffs and didn't win the whole thing.

Seriously.

I’d be disappointed if we made the playoffs and got swept, but I’m not expecting a championship.

Right now we’re in the position to control our own destiny. Tonight we just crapped the bed in a big way.

I was eleven the first time they made the playoffs.

I remember getting up every morning and checking the FWST to see what the magic number was because the games finished too late for me to watch.

I remember being able to watch the playoffs because they were the playoffs. I had no expectations because I had no personal investment. I just remember knowing it was the Rangers and hoping they would win every single game, kinda like now.

Agree...

I want the playoffs this year. Getting there would be HUGE for the organization, potential new owners, and the core of our team. They need the experience of getting there and playing on the big stage. This pennant chase right now is GREAT for the team. I just hope they hang tough and finish strong!

by bstair on Aug 14, 2009 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think its just a difference of opinion

I always remember the last game and if its not a win, im disappointed for the entire offseason. I’m not one to settle for just merely making it to the playoffs. That simply means you are in the top 20% of your league. Not a big deal to me.

I agree that it is very exciting to watch a contender but at the end of the day, I will be disappointed the day the rangers are eliminated. And more importantly, I will still feel good about how the young guys played this year. That is all that is important

by nathanbaum09 on Aug 14, 2009 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Only one team wins their last game after making the playoffs.

I’m sure the team would be disappointed in having lost whatever playoff series knocked us out, but they would also be very proud to have exceeded expectations so incredibly.

This phrase "It happens" confuses me (or its corollary "These things happen)

We discuss baseball in terms of players doing or not doing something, then with the game on the line, fate intervenes (“it happens”), with no rhyme or reason. Using this logic, a meltdown could have “happened” to Papelbon in the bottom of the ninth, but unfortunately for us, fate “happened” to smile upon him, and not Frankie.

by davea on Aug 15, 2009 12:07 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think fate has anything to do with it.

Fate didn’t make Frankie not get Victor Martinez out on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth. Fate didn’t make Eddie groove one to Ortiz in the seventh.

Pitching shittily made both of those things happen. Not some mystical force that intervenes at will with no explanation.

I imagine it will be Feliz-CJ-O’day.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 15, 2009 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

You're both probably right--no Frankie for awhile.

But I wish Wash would be creative with Feliz and not necessarily make him the first arm out of the pen—use him in the spot when we absolutely need an out. I don’t think he’s even bothered by the pressure—he bounced back nicely from the Kennedy homer.

by davea on Aug 15, 2009 12:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think hes really been using him as the first arm out

More of a coincidence, hes been in constant pressure situations thus far. all fairly close games.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Aug 15, 2009 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

You're right--but it always seems like there's been a "cushion" of at least two

other closers—he’s never thrown after CJ or Frankie—from what I can recall.

by davea on Aug 15, 2009 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions

That's retarded.

That 9th inning...

Felt like one big kick to the crotch…

I can’t remember ever feeling that deflated as a Rangers fan… I’ve been there with the Cowboys and Mavericks… But not like this with this team before tonight… Wow.

Whoever does the late-night show on The Fan was talkin about people calling this the worst loss in Rangers history… I don’t think it’s that bad, but my God it sure felt like it during that inning.

by N41D on Aug 15, 2009 12:39 AM CDT reply actions

I think it's the worst loss only because we never have important games.

I’m sure the red sox and yankees have had 10 losses just last year that were worse.

Late getting back

Some impressions:
a) Salty needs to be checked for a pinched nerve. Shoulder ache, and intermittent hand numbness. Three or four throws back to Millwood way off target.
b) Frankie ain’t well. No command, no velocity. Hope CJ stays healthy the rest of the way and Feliz does meaningful work without being overloaded.
c} Eddie. Oh, Eddie. Please recognize that coming into close games, walking your first batter, and giving up home runs means an end to your days on an active roster.
d) Hank. Four years now of overdoing, trying too hard, chasing the elusive HR. Hope your next four years in the National League work out better.
e) Wash. People don’t understand your limitations in setting a lineup. Hang in, it will get better, although you may have to settle for ascent next year.
f) This isn’t a catastrophe loss. It’s an unlikely loss at a really bad spot in the schedule. I got the drift when Eddie came into the game, and only shook my head about the top of the 9th. Once set in motion, nothing that followed was a surprise.

Go Rangers.

Some quotes i found that i liked.

One from frankie

“I don’t want anyone at my locker so beat it,” Francisco said

and then one from Francona

“When you think you’ve seen everything, you probably haven’t come close,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “That was probably one of the more exciting innings I’ve been a part of.”

Since the middle of may Frankie has only pitched in back to back games three times. His lines in those second games?

Okay after this gut shot everyone needs some good news

Paul Strong, LHP 17th Round Selection from Cali has signed.

Ming’s LInk

This is a get I never expected. He’s a very good high school arm who committed to baseball powerhouse UC Irvine. This is a great signing. Go JD and Preller.

Now if they could just get

Blash, Reggie williams, Purke and Scheppers

by rentz on Aug 15, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Not a fan of Williams

I don’t think he’ll sign regardless but Williams is a terrible hitter, 20 years old, who’s played in his dad’s travel league but never in high school. He’s a plus, plus runner but other than that, I’m not sure he’s a baseball player. Besides you’ve got Lane and Sierra for toolsy outfielders they’ve signed. I’d rather spend money on pitchers and a 3B than another OF.

I think the money for Strong came from the fact that they know Blash won’t sign. Neither will Lemke so they’re going back and trying to swoop up some later round picks. I think Purke will get done but Sheppers won’t be till instructs at least and may drag on to the new year.

by Hull Fan on Aug 15, 2009 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions

He's 20? I can't find a birthdate on him.

But he was a top 200 prospect according to BA and has pure 80 speed. A 6.2 60 yard dash is nuts. And he stole like 3 bases per game. If he can field the ball well in CF and just hit the ball on the ground he can probably at least play in the bigs as a 4th/5th OF. If he can learn to take a walk or two he could be more than that.

Tell me I'm not the only one...

Is anybody else here upset about the amount of red sox fans at the game last night!? I know there will always be sox fans where ever they play but last night was ridiculous. It sounded like a home game in the 9th when all their hits were happening, and “lets go Red Sox” chant was clearly audible. Those fair weather fans need to get out of our ballpark!
