Evan Grant on the Ranger bullpen
Evan Grant analyzes the Rangers bullpen, and talks about what the team is going to have to do going forward...
Grant suggests -- and I tend to agree -- that you simply can't use Frank Francisco on back-to-back days anymore. Since coming off the d.l., he's been bad in the second games, and it looks like he's just not able to cover sufficiently to bring his closer's stuff.
And that probably means using either C.J. Wilson or Neftali Feliz in save situations, and probably having those guys pitch both the 8th and 9th when Frankie isn't available, rather than using them as a one inning reliever.

Francisco Cordero anyone?
Just kidding.
Frankies health issues and strugles on the mound are both shortterm and longterm problems. Might the seemingly SP depth force Feliz to be a closer?

Just stop with that.

I don't mind either of those guys going multiple innings
Especially Feliz who right now should be going multiple innings anyways. No point in having him only go out there and throw 10 pitches a game
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

i admit it's discouraging
but is three instances really a large enough sample to justify such a conclusion? not that you have the time in the middle of a pennant chase to gather a whole lot of data. but aside from his performance on back-to-backs is there any biomechanical reason to believe he would be so effective with rest and so ineffective on back-to-backs?

Well
If he’s physically not 100%, it may be a matter of him needing more recovery time between outings.

that would be plausible
if that’s the case, then you’d hope frankie would step up and let the team know though. or that the professionals whose job it is to worry about these kinds of things will take note.

Yes, it is
3 is one too many! It’s August 15th, not June 15th. He has had 3 chances to prove he can pitch on back to back days and has proven the opposite. Last night was the perfect example…win that game and pick up a game on the Angels, Sox, and Rays. Instead, you lose a game to the Sox and stay level with the Angels and Rays. However, if he can’t go back to back days the Feliz or Ceej need to be the everyday closer and Frankie needs to go back to setup.
Woo, nice shot tiger.
Anyway, yes, loosen up the “roles” in the bullpen please, o’day-wilson would have probably worked out yesterday (of course cj-frankie probably would have too).
the preceding post was a great success.
Why not just let CJ close?
Frankie can’t be counted on to carry a heavy work load. That leaves the bullpen without a situational lefty (one that’s worth a shit, that is), so I’m advocating A.J. Murray being called up. He can take Arias’s spot on the 40, let him do mop-up duty until we figure out whether or not he can be counted on. Solved.
That's why they call them business sox
CJ as closer
He’d probably do fine, except it’ll mean we all have to listen to the torrent of “OMG, CJ is teh suxxorz, DFA his azz, he’s the worst pitcher ever!” comments the next time he blows a save opportunity…
Officially gay for Neftali Feliz
And even when he doesn't...
…if he lets a baserunner on, it will be, “He sucks, even if he gets the save he still tried to blow it.”

Ignoring the larger quantity to focus on a couple rotten eggs
yes, only really stupid people do that.

I agree
It’s weird that AJM focuses his ire on the musings of a tiny group of posters here.

Lawyer logic
“either/or” is easier to to construct a straw-man counter argument against some pov than “both/and”. Or it could be a misplaced idea of what a “blog admin” does.
it's more than a tiny group
people get very vocal about cj anytime he does anything they dont agree with on or off the field

Diferentiate between upset with in the moment and long term evaluation.
Not to mention intentional hyperbole, noone wanted to freakin DFA frankie.
When someone does take it to far there are usually a couple replies sayings thats stupid TO THE GUY, rather than the hour later “everyone hates CJ” approach.

Didn't see last nights game because I worked.
But did Lewin say who was covering him tonight?
Is it Nadel?

I can't remember him doing it
Victor did it now and then but Nadel? At least not in the past few years.

Thinking last night when FF was starting to melt down
could we bring in Feliz. It was fleeting because Happy is knew to the majors and the pen. I reckon he could handle it, but I’m scared because of a couple “if’s.” What if he does well, does the FO keep him there? What if he fails? Can he handle to adversity and pressure that comes with the position?

Is anyone else concerned with Millwood taking himself out of the game last night?
He got to a 100+ pitches pretty fast
In fact, I’m rather shocked to find out that he has failed to go at least seven innings in eight straight starts. In his last six, he’s only been able to go six or fewer
Any chance the big guy is beginning to wear down?
This is the time of year when the bullpen has to step-up. Yesterday was the second key game they’ve blown in a week. We’ve been fortunate: Feldman and Hunter have been going deeper in games.
But all you need is a few ‘un-quality’ starts in a row and bam, your bullpens gassed
BOS is a hella tough lineup
But sure, he is prolly wearing down a bit.

Meh...
Boston hasn’t been a very tough lineup lately. Plus they are missing their biggest douche, I mean bat, in Youk.
OC’s point about Millwood is valid. All those innings early on may have worn him down. Hard to say. I can’t imagine a tough competitor wanting to come out of a game like that when he did unless he was really gassed. He’s had many a game this season where he went 115-120 pitches too.

finally got rid of that cluster of lefties
i dont care too much about lineups, but it seemed kind of absurd to me that Wash would group all our lefties consecutively. at least if you split them up you diminish the chance of giving the opposing manager an obvious choice to bring in a lefty specialist to handle them in order. the last thing i want to see his hank or even murphy hitting against a lefty in a high leverage situation.

maybe i'm crazy and love cj too much
but i was at the game last night. i observed something that was quite disturbing in the 9th. frankie stepping off the bag like 4 times in the ninth. perhaps it was b/c he was tired/ not feeling well/ knew he was screwed or whatever. just seemed to me that anytime the crowd got really loud “playoff loud” he had to step off then he couldn’t locate his pitches. prolly just overreaction on my part but it seems to me that cj pitches better under pressure situations. new york and boston series over the past couple years come to mind.
