Jarrod Saltalamacchia to the disabled list, Kevin Richardson up, Ian Kinsler hitting 6th
Per T.R. Sullivan, Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been put on the disabled list, and Kevin Richardson has been called up to take his place on the active roster.
The Rangers are apparently actively seeking another alternative as a backup catcher on the trade market. Maybe the Tigers want to give them Gerald Laird back.
Also per Sullivan, Ian Kinsler is back in the lineup and hitting 6th tonight, with Julio Borbon in the leadoff spot.

I'd play them each about 50%
I think it would be a pretty good situation. Very likely an improvement out of what overall production we’ve gotten from the position so far.

and it's a move that the business side would certainly approve

i’ve watched about 10-15 games he’s caught this year and he doesnt suck on D. His bat has slowed, but he’s probably still more of threat to get on base than either Salty or Tea, as sad as thats gone this year.

what is the advantage to Richardson over Pina?
Richardson brings nothing with him as far as I know, and Pina would at least bring some skills to provide good defense and throwing. I don’t understand why you would promote an inferior talent when a better option is available?

If they add him the have to keep him on the 40
for fear of someone claiming him off waivers.
If they don’t add him he might not be claimed in the Rule 5 draft. Thus they have a better chance to keep him. Or at least that’s one theory.
by Hull Fan on Aug 15, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because Richardson will clear waivers
And is only going to be up for a short period of time.
Pina, you’d want to drop from the 40 man before long, and someone would claim him, resulting in you losing him altogether.

i guess it’s his fault the old school brotha thinks he should leadoff. maybe if he didn’t hit as many home runs or steal as many bases he could be a good number 3….. sorry for being a dick but im tired of the kinsler hate. he’s not rickey henderson or johnny damon. he’s Ian Effing Kinsler so let him do what he does and enjoy it. kinda funny how a traditionally last place laughing joke of a franchise starts hating on guys like kinsler, hamilton, wilson and murphy when they’re part of the best team in over a decade. the rangers prolly won’t make the playoffs this year but i’ve seen things out of this team that make me proud to root for them. i’d love to have a lineup of crawford, ellsbury, pujols, tex, arod, hanley, mccann, holliday, pedroia but my fantasy team isn’t that good.. i know i;ve gone off on a tangent and sound like a douche bag im just frustrated with the hate when this team is overachieving like a mofo.

Kudos to Hank F moving down to 7th and IK out of the lead-off spot. Melikey although I don’t know why the hell Borbon is even playing in a game of this magnitude muchless leading off (still trying to outdistance the incompetence of the manager). I’d have Murphy lead-off.

How was Richardson’s defense in other postitions? He is killing AAA lefties. Maybe he becomes a platoon at first.

or maybe he rides the pine.

Well Tea is a righty too with (in an incredibly small sample) a huge split.
And tea has priority over richardson heh.
At tea’s age with the rest hes gotten he should be fine right now, hopefully he can catch a lot.
the preceding post was a great success.

i like this lineup, except for Byrd hitting fourth
but i guess it does the best job of breaking up righty/lefty. If ian doesnt like batting sixth against RH, he probably needs to look in the mirror, Wash pretty much has no choice but to move him down. I mean, come on, you put up the putrid OB% he has this year and its almost forcing the managers hand. I dont mind him hitting leadoff against lefties since he’s probably one of our best options and he hits them well, so thats ok. But against righties, he has zero business hitting up there.
I hope Borbon is up to the task, I really like him and believe in him, but its definitely gonna be a tough task for him. I do like that we are giving this a shot, hopefully he can just get on base at a reasonable rate.

I'd rather flip Kins & Hack

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.

More on the Kinsler move

I don't know what I think about the way Washington handled this
Sometimes you have to do what the boss tells you and keep quiet about it. Maybe it’s more important for him to stroke Kinsler’s ego a bit here though?

I think it's sorry
Wash just threw the FO under the bus and then Ian turned around and threw Wash under the bus. I would have to think that JD is frustrated by this as he referred questions back to Wash.

Makes total sense
When the Rangers moved Young to 3b, they said they were doing it to bring up Andrus, not because Young was a terrible defensive shortstop.
Now that the Rangers are moving Kinsler down in the order, they’re saying its because Borbon needs to hit leadoff, not because Kinsler has been a bad leadoff hitter this year.

moving Kinsler down in the lineup
It wasn’t Ron Washington’s decision.

Good...
I’m glad JD and Nolan had the balls to say something. Wash should have just bit the bullet and told Ian he’s moving down though. He tries too hard to be a players manager sometimes imo. Throwing JD and Nolan under the bus just means that he’s afraid to tell Ian himself.
I really like Ian. I think he is one of the best players on the team and will turn things around. However I can’t help but feel like his attitude about some things really sucks. If you can’t be told that your swing has too much of an upercut to it, or you are being moved down in the order after struggling for a few months, without getting all pissy and defensive then maybe there’s a problem.

"Thowing under the bus", what baseless tripe.
And as to how many times or what they discussed with Kins before today, neither you or I will ever know.

Then why would Wash...
make it a point to let Ian know that it wasn’t just him that is moving Ian down in the lineup? Why did he have to let Ian know that it was the organization? I defend Wash a lot for taking shit that I think he doesn’t deserve, but this is just weak. You’re the manager. You tell the guy that he hasn’t been performing like he’s capable of the last few months and he needs to work on not popping up over half the time, then he can be moved back up in the order.

You could take it at least a couple different ways:
(1) The “throwing under the bus” scenario, in which Washington doesn’t agree with the front-office decision to bat Borbon leadoff against righties, and/or wants Kinsler to believe he doesn’t agree with it;
(2) A less confrontational but more conspiratorial scenario, in which Daniels, Ryan, and Washington have collective reasons for wanting to give Kinsler the message that “the organization” isn’t thrilled with his performance in the top spot in the order, and Kinsler really simply didn’t have much to say about that.
And, of course, there are various flavors in between and beyond. This should be good for at least a couple days’ worth of arguing about various folks’ intentions and insights, eh?

Well the end result that everyone wants,
is that Kinsler realizes his approach needs an overhaul and he works on that and is happy and productive. Maybe the good cop-bad cop routine from the FO and Worsh is what they decided would have the best chance to shake him up without hurting his ego and affecting his attitude.

Interesting thought...
on the good cop-bad cop routine. Perhaps JD told Wash to throw him and Nolan under the bus. Could be the case. I still think it’s odd that they would have to come up with a scenerio like that though because of Kinsler’s ego and attitude. If that is the case then Ian really needs to work on his attitude.
I guess it’s all speculation though. Who knows.

agreed
I tend to believe #2, or else Wash would probably be fired at game’s end tonight. He(and “they”)may have figured it was the only way to get thru to him about hisperformance as a lead-off guy.

It's also worth remembering how the Young situation played out,
especially vis-à-vis Washington, Daniels, and Ryan.
